DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION."
There will te a Democratic Mass Conven
tion at the Court House, in Albany, on Fri
day evening, December 3, 1809, for the pur
pose of nominating a Democratic city ticket.
MANY DEMOCRATS.
Willamette Frcicutinq Compxnt. On
last Saturday there was a meeting of the
stockholders of this enterprise at Monroe,
Benton county, at which the capital atook of
tho Company was increased to 530,000. The
action of the directors in purchasing the
steamer Ann was unanimously endorsed.
There was much indignation expressed at
the action of the P. T. Company in refusing
to receive freight from the -ln, and their
conduct was denounced in severe terms, and
has caused an unanimous hostility to that
Company among the people of the Long
Tom and surrounding country.
McCoRMirK.'s Almanac. We have re
ceived McCorraick's Almanac for 1870, and
find it replete with useful information and
valuable statistics relative to Oregon and the
adjoining Territories. Every household
should secure a copy, and also would it not
be a good idea for those wlw have friends in
the Kastdesiringinformation and facts about
our climate and resources, to scud a copy of
this Almanac to them. They will probably
get more reliable information from it than
from any other available source. Freeland,
at the post olSce, has litem for sale, at only
one bit per cpy.
Commendable Entebtrise. In another
column will be found a letter addressed to
Mr. Julius Cradwohl, merchant of this city,
in relation to ihc tax on farmers' produc
tions. Mr. (Jradwuhl merits the gratitude
of the farmers of this section for his enter
prise and interest thus displayed in seeking
information which so vitally concerns them,
and we are quite urc they will ful.y appre
ciate his efforts in their behalf. That he
did not fticceed in obtaining any substantial
information, U of course not chargeable to
him, feinee he did his beat,
From Scio. A correspondent, writing
from Scio on the 25th ult., furnishes us the
ullowirg items from that locality :
Mr. J. J. Cole, with the assistance of his
children, the eldest of whom is not yet
grown, has, since the Crst of September
propared and sold sixteen tJwusand pounds tJ'
dried apjJ.es.
John Montgomery, living three miles from
Scio, has killed a black "bar" weighing
near 500 lb i.
His Honor, Lord Mayor Stroud, went out
birding and killed 0,000.
Al3anv Bkewxrv. This establishment,
we are glad to know, still maintains its rep
utation as a first-class Brewery. When Mr.
Keifer started bis enterprise, some three
vears ago, he met with considerable opposi
tion, but he and the indefatigable and jolly
Charley lloggjrs have "worried it through'
until they have established it on a basis mc
nd to no institution of the kind in Oregon.
Charley lt ggcrs says be is going to Congress
next year. - - - -
At Harper & Co.'s store may be fouud
a beautiful selection of ladies' dress goods
and trimmings, which our lady readers can j
see only to admire. And their ready made;
clothing would certainly satisfy the tasto of!
the most fastidious . specimen of the male
biped. 'In point of fact," at Harper &
Co.'s ''everything is lovely, and the aquatic
fowl of the genus Anser is suspended at an
exceedingly lofty altitude."
Railroad Intelligence. Last; Sunday j
nizht the track was laid and the cars run
ning to the Chickamas river, and the track
lying has probably now reached Oregon City.
We learn from the Portland papers that
Holladay & Co. have purchased sufficient
iron to extend the road to Albany, and that
it is probable the line will be completed to
this city by the end of next year.
New Jevteluv Establishment. We are
pleased to see that a gentleman from San
Francisco, Mr. Titus, is opening out a jew
elry establishmeut at 11. C. Hill L Son's
drug store, in this city. Such an iustitution
has been needed in Albany for many years,
aud Mr. Ticus eecnis to be fully competent
to supply the vacancy. Ilia advertisement
vrill appear next week. .
At Brigcs'. 3Ir. John Briggs, at the
"Old Stove Store," has some splendid cook
ing and parlor stoves which we advise our
readers to call and examine before purchas
ing elsewhere. You will always find Mr.
B. ready and willing to "do the polite" in
showing his wr.rcs.

Lumber. Messrs. Bryant and Curl last
Tuesday brought over from the mill of the
latter gentleman, in the Forks of the San

ltErcBLtcAH Convention. The Bepub
licans of this cijy met en masse at tho Court
House lost night, according to announce
ment. The hall was densely packed .with
aboutadozon and half conventioners. A
chairman and secretary wero elected. After
a harmonious silence of considerable length,
the chairman Arose and eloquently said t
"Gentlemen, motions are now in order
and will be entertained by the chair."
(Sensation.) A pnuso of marked abil
ity followed. A gentlemen, said to bo
tho Chairman of tho informal thimble-rigging
and wiro-pulling committee, s.tid he
thought tho meeting had better adjourn un
til Saturday night. This was tho best speech
of tho evening. The Convention adjourned.
These proceedings have inspired the great
est confidence in tho wisdom of tho Conven
tion, and excited tho liveliest hopes for its
future.
Freight Suh'mint. We aro indebted to
that obliging gentleman, Mr. John Mon
teith, for tho following statement of tho
shipment of freight from tho 1. T.Co's land
ing, this city, during the month of Novem
ber, 18G9 : 109 halfbbls lard, 130 cases

Didn't Know Himself. A Dutchman
named May got tight the other night, and,
after ho went to his bachelor quarters and
got fairly to sleep somo mischievous fellows
crept into his room and painted his face
freely with lamp-black, and Iks says that :
"In te morning ven I vukes up I dink I hnf

Ax Albant Invention Abroad. Mr.
C. T. Finlayson, formerly of this city, has
prepared and patented an invention for pro
pelling ships, which promise to effect a
revolution in the ship "building woild. The
particulars of the invention are set forth at
some length in the iku'enlijic American,
which we will give a fuller account in the
future. A ship is now being built at San
Francisco which will employ Mr. Finlayson's
principle. The invention secured a diploma
at the Mechanic's Institute Exhibition, re
cently he'd in Sun Francisco.
Narrow ,. pe. Mr. Colon T. Finlny
son, formerly of this county, writes to his
father detailing his escape from death at the
late terrible California railway disaster. He
says: "One man was crushed to dejth by
ray side, another cut about the head and his
leg broken. I never expected to get out alive,
it took them so long to get to me. My face
is burned some, arms also, but both legs
from the knee down arc bruised the worst."
Wire Clothe-- Line Again. Mr. P. T.
Brock, the white wire clothes line man, is
in town again, which reminds us that the
wire, or metallic line, is the theajet and
most durable line eycr invented, and is a
most indispensable accompaniment of the
wash tub. We have the m and know. 31 r. B.

A Rumor. It is reported that tho exam
ination of the U!ck Creek Pas through the
Calipooia Mountains develops the facts that
that route is not practicable, and the survey
will be abandoned. This is not authorita
tively known. The results of the investiga
tion cannot be known for a few days.
Cl'riocs. The Portland papers correct
their statement about the fight wherein U.
S. 31arhal Young got whipped, and now
say that the Marshal didn't get whipped ;
that nobody got whipped, and that there
was'nt any fight after all. Funny fellows,
these reporters!
Arrived. Hon. Ge . E. Cole, Scc'y of the
O. C. K. H., arrived last night. We learn
from him that the track was expected to
reach Aberncthy Creek yesterday. This is
14 mile,s from Portland. Clackamas bridge
will be completed by the 20th instant.
Cheap Government. There was no di
rect city tax levied in Harrisburg this year.
The receipts from finex, licenses, etc., were
sufficient te defray all the expenses of tbc
city government.
New Millinery. Mrs. Dur.iway has a
supply of beautiful millinery good which
our lady friends would do well to call and
examine. Head her card among the adver
tisements. Big Things. Messrs. -Joel Ketchum and
Jere. Driggs on Wednesday killed two pigs,
nine months old. one of which weighed 350
and the other 400 lbs. Match 'em.
In- Towx.Wc observed Captain Enoch
George Adams, of the Vancouver family
IleyUtcr. rushing about town this week. 11c
acted like he had lost something.
First Premium. Mr. James Finlayson,
of this county, took tho first premium on
his Deed fcower at the recent Mechanics' In
