IU a private note from Monroe, Denton county, we nro informed of a case of domestic scandal which is creating considerable gossip in that usually quiet vil lage. It Fecins that a disciple of Esculapcu Dr. Roberts the father of four children and the busbanl of an estimable and lovely 'wife, has for soaic time had an unaccounta ble yearning for the companionship of the xrife of Mr. Saaiuel Hoover, a gentleman residing in that vicinity. The Doctor's yearning was dittoed by Mrs. II.. (who was the mother of t o little children) and the intimacy has at last culminated in the flight ' foe part unknown of the criminal pair. Fix Tukm. :The brick pavement in front of the post office is a terribly uneouth, un even and dilapidated affair. Where is the officer who was ordered to repair sidewalks T Also, the Overland Hotel has a water spout with the mouth suspended over the middle of the sidewalk, through which the Tain" pours like the "water comes down at Lodore;" and the pedestrian must either pa.s under and j;ct drenched, or go out into the mud knee dep to avoid it. Please have it fixed, friend Murray, or we are fearful somebody will 1x3 tempted to violate the sec ond clause of the Decalogue. Personal. Mr. II. II. Markham, of this city, started East last Saturday to attend the Oberlin (Ohio) College. We last week inadvertantly omitted to acknowledge a friendly call from lion. II. II. Gilfry, of Eugene. ". - Mrs. Dr. Lister and her daughter, Mrs. R. II. Weeks, left us this week the former to join her husband in their new home at Sjeilacoom, W. T., and the latter to return t her home at Silver City, Idaho. Mr. D. C. M. Gault has been employed in t"he editorial department of the J!egisler, and has already entered upon his labors, we suppose, as we fuw him floating around through the gentle mist yesterday in search of items. "Search is life," Brother Gault. Here?s our (phist) on that lay out. SsifcsisuERs. A trio of-gentlemen came over from Ilrownsville on Wednesday night, and, after warming up in one of our saloons, deployed as skirmishers and engaged in a eries of lively ''brushes." After their ar tillery had been captured and their guns epikeJ, the saiuke of battle was allowed to lift from the gory Held, and it was discover . cd that each of the three armies had sus ' tained a most disastrous defeat and were captured by our city Marshal. They paid a ransom to the city, and were released un der the law of nations. It is probable peace will be restored, us each army was s j badly i demoralised as to be unSt for future service. Imported. Mr. Niutrod Price last week received by steamer, from X. P. Buyer ,ilCu., Gum Tree, Chester county, Pcnn., four fine pigs of the Cheater White breed, probably the first ever brought to this coast. One pair of the pigs are for Mr. Martin Payne (who Miperintended the forwarding of them), and the other pair fur Mr. Price, who estimates the cost of his pair at $140. He also received by the same vessel a couple of peacock", who strut around as proudly as a young miss with her first waterfall. Well Szrruzv. There are two dray companies in our city at present, viz : .Messrs. Montgomery & Barnes and Messrs. Westfall fc Ketchcm. The former named firm propose sxm to add a livery stock to their stables, and we will then have three livery establishments in the city. Albany is surely progressing ; and when we get the Uailrnad and Sautiam Ditch into town, we can "bid farewell to every fear and wipe our weeping eye, Strcck it. Mr- "7m. Pickett, formerly editor of the Alljany Jtmrual we learn i now engaged as editor on the Portland Com mercial ; and there is tbe source of all those "hefty" tirades against the Cascade Moun tain TTagon Road, that have appeared in that paper recently. 'Sour grapes," ray broth of a boy ! . . . Blowx Orr. The cylinder head of the engine in Beach & Mnntcith's mill, this city, blew out last Wednesday, and the mill will necessarily be compelled to suspend work for a week cr two, until the damage is re paired. Odoriferous. Our lady friends will find , & splendid assortment of toilet perfumeries and hair oils at the Drug Store of 11. C.IIill & Son ; and they will also find a polite and attentive salesman in tne person of 3Ir. Carothers. ' " - Behind Time. In consequence of the late heavr rains and th3 rising of the Santiam. (we suppose,) Wednesday's mail had not ar rived from Salem at the hour of going to press yesterday evening. Papers. Vi'c are under obligations to 3Ir. J. Harrows, now visiting in the East, for St. Louis papers containing the proceedings of the National Capital Convention, of which he was a member. Accident. The steamer Actite ran on a snag and punched a hole in her bottom, above Corvallis, last Monday, 'but the leak was stopped before ony material damage was sustained. " Svcceesfcl Ximrods. Dr. Alexander, J. C. Mendenhail, and Lew. and Walter Ketch- am returned from the mountains last week with fifteen deer. Gaod 1 Completed. Cistern Xo. 1 is now finished and contains about ten feet of water. Our city is now supplied with two cisterns. - Taxes. On next Monday, the 22d inst., Sheriff Irvine will start over the county on his annual tax colleating tour. Building. Mr. John Parker is having a fine cottage dwelling house erected in the eastern part of the city. Nice Place The stove store of O. P. Tompkins & Co. is a perfect palace of rich lb if and lovely wares. PfTEitsox's Magazine for December is on our table in advance. It is a splendid num ber, with two steel engravings, a mammoth fashion plate, a colored pattern in Berlin work, and nearly .00 wood cuts. We do not wonder nt its immenso circulation said to bo the largest in the world for it gives more for the money than nt y other. Its Mammoth Colored Fashion Plates arc always the latest and prettiest, and its stories are from the best writers of fiction. In 1870, in addition to its usual quantity of short stones, Five Original Copy. right Novelets will be t;ivenf aud it will contain about 1,000 pages of read ing matter, 12 mammoth colored, fashions and 14 superb steel engravings.
