A Scranton special says that later explorations of the mice have developed a sadder phase of the tragedy. Many chambers have been entered where the miners were found dead in the different gangways, showing that the destruction must have come swift and sudden. The spirit evinced by the miners to-day has been bitter in the ex treme, but it is assuaged by offers of sym pathy and assistance flowing in from every side. The railroad companies make ail arrangements possible, and the wishes of the miners are in every respect consulted. But they remain obdurate. The-more; reasonable are ready to listen to reason, but they are in the minority. Many arc refractory and trouble is apprehended and has only been avoided by consum mate tact. "Avonbale, Sept. 9. The two expe rienced miners with twenty men have jnt returned from the mine. They re port that they explored every part of the workings and are satisfied that all the bodies have been recovered. 108 is the number of bodies taken out. Xev." York, Sept. 11. Dispatches state that there long has been a feud between the Welch aud the Irish miners. The latter threatened the former for not being more active in the late strike, and it is believed the wood partition and lattice in the shaft' were fired purposely; as it was not burned at the bottom, but near the tcp. ' IrJ'oriiiatiofr from Danish sources states that Denmark fully expect the ratifica tion of the St. Thomas treaty on the ground that the United States having vo ted to go our. Government cannot retreat. California;1" San Francisco, Sept. C At a meet ing cf the Board of Supervisors to-day a comuunieatiou was presented from May or MeCoppin demanding a recount of all the ballots cast at the election, so far as concerns tho oQ.ee of Mayor. He alleges that tha public and himself are not satis fiad with the manner in which the count Was nade ; that the ballots were tamper ed with in some places, and that results were obtained contrary to the expressed wish of a majority of the electors of- the city, lie says ; "In this connection I think it quite proper to remark to you, gentlemen, that it was with great surprise and not a little indignation I read that 3Ir. Selby, in reply to an address made to hisi by Messrs. Harding, Stratman. Barstow, Berry, Badlam, Hugney and Arnot, assumed the air of a great reform er j that he had been elected in opposi tion to a party banded together by cor ruptions and unprincipled speculators. By this it is most fair to suppose that Mr. Selby meant tue and my fricuds. In re ply I have no hesitation in charging that the corruptionists and corruption was on his side and not on mine. It U known and can bo proved that large sums of money wcro raised for election purposes by his party arid friends, and that the sumo funds wcro used in tho most un blushing and unscrupulous manner for his election. Before Mr Selby and his friends havo cleared their skirts of other charges made on every street corner, and hero are repeated, it is of questionable propriety for him to step forward us tho champion of. reform. Tho insinuations contained in Mr. Selby V remarks about corruptionists and municipal speculation I pronounco unqualifiedly false and mean, aud I challenge him to givo n singlo proof, with all my record open to him, of tho charges he' prefers. My supporters were honorable men, and tho contest on my side was conducted in a fair aud hon orable way, which is more than can be said of my opponents. Unless Mr. Seh by can prove and does prove tho charges he has preferred on insinuation, he must tako his scut, if on recount ho is elected, under tho suspicion that he is ready to sacrifice private and public decency, and to stab in the back an honorable foe, one who has never either publicly or in pri vate said aught against him." The following from tho Chicago Ihtily Republican, contains many truths which the people of Oregon in particular ecem to be, in a great measure, strangers to. Hence wo give it a place in our columns, and commend it to the careful considera tion of our readers: " What tell us so readily the standard of a town or city as the appearance ot iu paper? And its youth, or ago can as well be defined by the observing as by per sonal notice. 1 he enterprise of us citi tens, is depicted by its auvcrti.-cmeuts, their liberality by tho looks of the pa per. Some papers show a good, solid. healthy foundation, plethoric purses, and a well to do appearance generally; others show a striving to contend with the grasp ing thousands around them, trying hard t wrcuch out an existence from the close fisted community around them. An oc casion metorie display in its columns of telegraphic or local, or tho editorial shows what it can do if it had the means, but cannot continue in tho expensive work until support comes, which ought to be readily granted. A newspaper is like a church ; it wants fostering at the early commencement, and for a few years ; then, as a general thing, it can walk alouc.and reflect credit upon it location. Take your home paper, it gives you more news of immediate interest than the New York or other papers; it talks for you when other localities belie you; it stand up for your riht $ you always have a cham pion ia your home paper; and these who stand up for you should certainly Le well sustained. Your interests are kindred and equal, you must stand or fall together. Therefore it is your'intercst to support your home paper, not grudgingly, but a liberal fpint, as a pleasure not as a disagreeable duty, but as an investment that will amply pay the expenditure."
