Tompkins &Co., of this city furnished us with tho following recipes lor making Ocm Cukes," which will doubtless bo of practical uso to many of our lady readers. They are for cither wheat or Graham Hour. Ono rccipo is simply otic cup of cold miik and a tcaspoonlul of suit. Another is cuui posed of two full cups of Hour, two cups of cold water and ono tcaspootiful of salt. In cither of tho recipes named, mix as follows : Place tho water, or milk and water, (as per rccipo used) in a basin ; add tho salt, then stir in tho Hour slowly, in tho same manner as if making batter for sponge cako ; stir it well, keeping it free from lumps ; it is then ready for baking. It requires no raising, no yeast, no delay of tinier the batter is rcadv for bakinjr as soon n it is mixed. In baking let the gem pan bo hot and well grcajed beforo pouring in the batter. Fill each compartment about f full, and bake in a hot oven about 20 min utes, and then you will have tho bed tast ing and most healthful article of bread ever baked. We are indebted to Messrs. Tocjp kins & Co., for an opportunity of teting one of these ' Gem Pans," and no gladly recommend them to the public as tho best thing yet invented for making digestablo and anti-bilious bread. Tlie at tention of the teachers of Linn and adjoin ing countic.4 is called to the coming session of the ' Linn County Teacher's Institute," to be held at the Harmony Meeting House',' near Ponria, commencing the first Tuesday in October next, to continue three days. Speeches, essays, discussion upon, and ex planations of, deputed or difficult points in the various branches of common school edu cation, interspersed with music, will be the order of exercise as uual. It is hoped that teachers e.-plcially will come prepared to do their part in making this n pleasant ani profitable session. On last Wednesday tho Marbal arrested and took before the Itecordcr one George Titun, (colored), charg ed with " pommeling" a couple of " dusky red men of the forest ;" and the charge being sustained, Mr. Titus was fined $-5 and cost, and on refusing to pay the fine, he wai "sent up" for three days ; but, after gctj ting an inside view of the vermin bed ud for the county jail, he reconsidered his for mer resolution and "pungled " theneew-siry amount to secure his freedom. It would re quire a stout heart and a bravo one to spend one night among the rat, snakes and lizards of that public institution. Correction. A couple of weeks since we copied an articlo from the LlaJto II "orUl con taining an account of the death of Col. Sims, which statcil that deceased was a brother of the late unfortunate John A. Sims of this county.
