"A Sinoclar Fact. The peach
was ori'MDally a poi.sououi almond. Iu
fleshly parts were used to polsoa arrowa1
and the fruit fur this purpose was intro
duced into Persia. The transportation
and cultivation, however, not only re
moved its poisonous qualities, but pro
duced the delicious fruit we now enjoy."
We take the above from the Ilarrry
Magazine of the 20th of January, 1SGD.
We have often heard it tatd that the
plantiogof a peach-stone on thU island j
vtouIJ produce the almond, auch as may
he seen in the custom-house "round on
this island, and in several of the yatds
occupied by the citizens.
We are willing to be qualliSed on oath
that some eighteen months ago we plant
ed two peach stones as an experiment fur
raising the almond on this island. We
now have in lieu of the peach th; course,
hard-stone, almond, similar to those above
mentioned. Wo are not aware of any
poisonous qualities of this almond, though
we have heard of children having died
from the effects of having eateo them,
which might have occurred from eating
almost aoj other green fruit in excess.
We have eaten the fruit ourself without
having been poi.oned. Can any of our
friends throw light upon this subject.
