that this is the beginning of the 5th volume
of this piper. All thoso wishing to begin
withhc new year should subscribo at once.
We will take wood and produce of all kinds
on subscription. Many additions have
'Veen macle to the office, and the paper mate
rially improved. These improvements will
continue as fast as our increasing business
:wilt justify..: We are determined to make
the Democrat a live paper, devoted to the lo
cal interests of the surrounding country, to
the discussion of politics particularly our
State politics and to the wants of the fire
side. Wo ask every man who is interested
in such matters to constitute himself an
agent and to assist in increasing the useful
ness of the Democrat by extending its cir

that in Ochoco valley the grass is scant and
Ktunted, and stock water scarce and poor.
There are a race track, variety store, hutel,
blacksmith shop and nearly all the other
concomitants of a pioneer settlement, and
little red-eye is attainable on a pinch.
Our friend Jake Norcross and his wife had
m arrived nnd were industriously engaged in
the attempt to make their cabin habitable
and ounfortable. Thev had a wajron cover
stretched at one side of the hut (on the out-
aide) and were temporarily residing under
its friendly shelter until they could complete
the arrangements of their more substantial
Tc.iidence ; aud they seemed content and
happy.
To Subscribers. Do not fail to read our
.advertisements. The person who takes a
paper now-n-day., and neglects to read over
the advertisements, is apt to lose much ral
- uablc information. The advertising patron
age of a parer indicates not only the cntcr
" prise of the city and county vrhere it is pub
lished, but it is also an infallible proof that
the business men are possessed of vim and
goabeadatireness. Show us a business com
munity which doesn't advertise, and we'll
show you a community where business is
stagnated. The man who advertises in a
liberal yet discreet manner is pure to take
the 1-sad of Lis neighbor who don't spend a
cent for printing ink. It is also conceded
that a man who advertises keeps a larger,
better and Eiore complete stfck uf goods,
and fells them cheaper than the man who
don't advertise. If you want ood bargains,
"call on the man who advertises.

A Sofeia Truth Quaiktlt Exr&sssxD.
The Far West if, par excellence, the Und of
effective jokes, tmd there is often a good deal
of solid truth at well (is humor in Western
repartee. A Virginia City correspondent of
an Indiana paper mentions a rather neat hit
made by one of the funny follows of that re
mote region the other day. A young lawyer
who had been employed to condense and put
Into a better shape the somewhat loose local
enactments, complained to the humorist, who
was a friend of his, that he found great dif
ficulty in making the required digest. "I'll
tell you what you do." said the other. Ef
you want to make a perfeck digest of them
ar' laws, you jest put youraolf through a
course of Plantation Bitters, for I wish I
may never strike silver ef you ken help di
pestin' anything nrter thut.'" This, making
due allowance for Western hjpcrbole was
about tantamount to saving that the bitters
are the most potent tomo and stomachio in
the world a truth as solf-evident as that all
men are born equal.
To Tax Patirs or Albant. Head the
notico of theCitv Recorder elsewhere. The
cistern is finished and 'the laborer is wor
thy of his hire." One and one-third mills
mt
on the dollar is required from all taxable
property within the limits of Cistern Dis
trict No. 2. The percentage is surprisingly
low, nnd the tax-payers in the District will
scarcely feel the loss of so small a sum,
and certainly not when they realise that it
is to be applied in paying for an institution
of such vast importance in the protection of
their property .;'," :

Horrible Diseases.
How many thousands of persons, both male
and female, are there who are suffering out a mis
erable existence, from tbe effect of secret indulg
ences, or from virus absorbed into the system.
Look at their pallid, emaciated and disfigured
faces, and their broken-down constitutions, dls'
lualifyinz them for the happiness of marriage or,
tbo enjoyment of life. In this horrid eituat!o
thousands suffer until ne&th closes tbe scene. Let
parents, guardians und friends attend to those
who are suffering with any of these horrible, life-
destroying maladies see tbat tbey are eared for
and cured bcrore it is too late. Kena them imme
diately to Dr. Gibbon, a physician who has made
private dbteaec bis pecial study for years,, and
who is certain to cure tho moH inveterate eases,
without mercury or iny injurious drugs. It is
important to those who are afflicted, or to those
who are interested in the welfare of their friend,,
to be careful of the many pretended doctors who.
infest all cities, publishing their skill in curing elP
diseases in a few days, imposing upon tbe pubbo
by uing the names of eminent physicians fjn
Lurope and other places. Vt, therefore, careful.
and make strict inquiry, or you ma fall into tho
hands of tbo?e charlatans.
Seminal Weakness.
Seminal emissions, the consequence of self-
abuse. This solitary vice, or dcjrared sexual
indulgence, is practiced by the youth of both
sexes to an almost unlimited extent, producing.
with unerring certainty, the following train
of morbid symptoms, unless combatted by acientin
medical measures, viz : Sallow countenance, dark
rpot under eyes, pain In tbe head, riflmg in the
ears, noise like the rustling of leaves aod rattling;
of chariots, uneaineM about the loins, weakness of
tbe limbs, confuted vision, blunted intellect, loss
of confidence, diffidence of approaching stranger,,
a diolike to form newacqoaintances, dispositioo
toshun society, los of memory, hectic flushes,
pimples and eruptiocs about tbe faee, furred,
totgue, fueled breath, eoughs, consumption, night
sweats, monomania nnd frequent insanity. Is
relief be not obtained.the sufferer should apply
immediately, either in porson or by letter, to have
a cure effected by hisnew and scientific mode of
treating this disease, which never fails of effecting
quick and radical cure. Dr. O. will rive ?10U
to any person who will prove satisfactorily to him
tbat be was cured of this complaint by either of
the San Franciw oquacks.
Married Dleo,
Or those who contemplate marriage, who are suf
fering under any of these fearful maladies, snonia

incident to females, treated with eminent success

tion, Barrenness, etc. will be speedily cured, with
out powonosus drugs, injuries, or unpalatable med
icines of any kind. Have no delicacy in calling,
no difference what yor troubles may be. The af
flicted are cordially iatitcd to call and satisfy
themselves.
Person's calling at l)r. Gibbon's otSce or send

assarances of coufiJential ecrey with implicit
faith, and expect no more than to be charged with
a fair and mutually satisfactory remuneration for
service rendered, considering tho circumstances
and difficulties of the rather than a too prev
