SATURDAY
...... AUGUST 7, 18fi.
A TVOJIAN HATER.
An ftircrtiscracnt appeared in a oaily
paper fcr a milliner and shop-girl, at a
Madame Lavage's, No. 121 Pearl street.
A pair of slender hands turned the pa
per over, a pair of browu eyes wandered
np and down the lon column of " Wants,"
until they rested upon this. ,
The very place, mamma," Baid Viola
Burnett. And forthwith the little hat and
neat mantle were donncd,-and soon 6ho
was walking in the direction of Pearl
street.
. I dare wy that there have been many
before me," she thought. " But, surely,
there no harm in trying", when mamma
and I need money so much ; and its com
ing all depend. upon me." -
It did not take long to bring her to No.
121 Pearl street, and she paused beforo
the glass door to collect hersslf. There
tras but one lady within, and she felt
tziach re'iered, for she expected to see a
rowd of caget applicants, among whom
bcr chance would be but slight; and, to
find it all quiet, and no one to face except
the aforesaid lady engaged in looking over
some boxes in the sear, was a pleasure
unexpected.
She entered and the lady came forward.
She was not very young, perhaps thirty,
with a pretty, kindly face; and when i-
ola Diada loavn Iter or rami, she gaVC a
little lauh, and said, " Dear mo f I am
deligbted ! Such a string of applicants as
I have hid, and all of them sour-looking
old maids, W'q should not have five cus
tomers in a week. Are you experienced ?"
' Yes ; I have worked for a year in the
establishment of Mrs. Latouchc."
44 Ah ! her name is well known and her
trork much admired. I am sure you will
init me. When will you begin ?"
" Now, if .you wish ; I am anxious to
begin as soon as you can find work for
me."
"Do b'gin at once; and, to givo us a
a specimen of your work, tako this hat,
and trim it. You must know, my dear
Miss."
"Burnett."
" Ah, yes, Miss Burnett, that I have a
brother, who is, in fact, the owner ot this
establishment, and it is to him that you
must look for directions ; for to tell the
truth, I am soon to be married !"
Viola nodded, and allowed the French
woman to go on.
" I am a widow, and have lived two
long years in a state of single wretched
ness, and have now resolved to again mar
ry. This fact, you must understand,
brings yoa directly under the attention
of M. Paul Lavalle, who, by the way, I
oust inform you, is a thorough woman
hator." " Is he old V asked Viola.
" No, be is young; but ho so utterly
despises women that I verily believe he
would discharge yoa were you to ask a
question beyond your business, lie is po
lite, tor all that, aad may oiler you the at
rtention dee to a lady ; but I beg you to
refuse every offer; for if you do not, you
vwill not long remain licre.
"The request was a strange one, but, nev
ertheless, easily granted : and she prom
ised to do all within her power to retain
&er situation.
It was late in the afternoon before the
entlcman arrived, and Viola only caught
a glimpse of a tail handsome man ; then
bent her eye3 resolutely upon her work.
" My brother, Miss Burnett !"
Miss Burnett raised her beautiful eyes
'for a moment, and then went on with her
work.
Do you fancy this work, Miss Bar
nett V he asked.
" Yes, sir."
"I am glad, for Adele is hard to please.
Do you think you will be content to re
main V
" Ye. s!r."
The gentleman turned away, evidently
thinking it useless to try to engage ber
in conversation, and she went soberly-on
with her work.
It rained when the hour came for Vic
la's return home, and she stood a moment
at the door, looking out in the dark, wet
streets.
" Miss Burnett," said Mr. Lavallo, "al
low me to see you home under my um
brella." Viola was surprised. Not only because
he was a rich man and she a poor milli
ner, and she wondered at his offer.
" No, thank you," she replied : " lean
go alone."
He had .not time to repeat the offer be
fore she vrzs out and half way down the
street.
It was darker than she had supposed,
and the rain fell in torrents ; but she drew
her mantle tightly around her, and with
bowed head walked swiftly along. Be
fore she reached the end cf the street"
c .there came a sound of sharp, quick steps
upon the pavement, and Paul Lavalle came
up beside her.
" Of course you think me very bold,
but I prefer to run the risk of incurring
your displeasure rather than see you en
danger your health by exposing yourself
on such a eight as this."
He drew her hand within his arm, and
together ttey went to Mrs. Burnett's
door. Viola allowed him to carry on the
conversation, answering only when direct
ly questioned, and then iu monosylables.
She could uot help , thinking, however,
what a pleasant, agreeable gentleman he
ra and half repented her promise to
j 0 - r j
bade him a formal good night, with a cool
little speech of thanks for his kindness.
She had no desire to loso her situation,
"but she was almost inclined to disbelieve
ma'dame's story. Well, it might be true ;
and if so, woman haters were .certainly
agreeable creatures.
The work became-a pleasure since daily
the establishment was brightened with
the owner's presence; but 'Viola never
forgot mademe's warning. It was all in
rain that h 3 brought fruits and flowers,
and praised her work. She never lifted
her dark eyes at his pleasantries, and
once when he chanced to clasp her white
" hands in the midst of a confused tangle
of ribbons, she .never spoke or .smiled;
and he would not have known that she
observed the action, but for the dash of
blood which swept across .her round
cheeks. -
There were many more rainy nights,
and many times the umbrella was brought
forth; and under its cover Viola trudged
hoa3 beside Paul Lavalle. She thought
ft) IP
him a strange man, and felt that inadanic
had never clearly understood him. lie
seemed very unlike her notion of a woman
hater. ' I
One day he dropped a note into her lap,
saying:'1' Hero is a letter for you, Miss
Burnett. You will send n reply beforo I
come again," and went away leaving her
to stare wonderfully nt the little note.
After a whilo tho opened it and read:
" Viola : You are a strango being I
cannot understand you; but 1 understand
my own heart, and it bids mo say I love
you. Will you giveme that blessed right
to call you my wife? I told you I must
know your reply beforo I ngaio come, and
so must it bo. Viola, my darling, I await
your answer.
" Paul Lav.vt.lk."
A joyous light broke over her face, and
with a flood ot happy tears, lola wrote
beneath, "I will be your wife."
" by are you so bright, v lola J asked
niadamo, who had entered.
" 1 our brother, madamo has asked mo
to bo his wife."
"And you told him "
"Yes."
" My sweet Viola 1 I knew my plan
would succeed. 1 had worked for months
to bring the change in Paul's fortunes, but
had been thus far unsuccessful. He de
clared that all women were husband hun
ters, and that he would never marry cno
of them. I knew iu an instant that you
would please turn, and so I trumped up
the whole story, l ou will wonder at tn
anxiety, but will cease to do so when
tell you that I cannot marry until ho is
settled in life. JJIcss your heart, I am dc
lighted."
Paul came in less than an hour, and
told her the same story; and together
they walked to Viola's mother, and sho
joined in their happiness. If ho ever was
a woman hater, ho laid it a side when he
married, and became a model husband.
They have a County J udgo out in Jose

The Xeics burlesques him admirably.

are four feet io diameter and mo en the nnptowed

with ease, and requires only twolerers to be used
io making any alteration. The superiority t,T the
"Oay" Plow will te clearly shown by tho fallow

We lik the Plow fur its draught bccaiwe tbeame
is brought to bear directly upon tbe Plow beam
instead of the carriage ; ahro beeause it is strong
and durable, all except the wooJ work being con

The whet Is running opon the solid land it an ad
vantage ftrer other Gang Plows in striking off
lands and in Plowing, Dot having to make tbe
