i7 ft (WW .AUGUST 7, 1869. .To S AUTOS, IttTKK. Messrs. Jesse Patrisb, J. C Mi.ndcnhall and the junior of the Democrat aeconitanicd by their families, rccentlj made a ten days' trip to the coast, eit Fort Yamhill and Salmon river. Found the toll, road in excellent j, travelitg condition, and located through aorao of . the m t beautiful and varied scenery in the wortd. " Massing through the the thriving village of Inle peadcece and the beautiful and romantically sit uated town of Dallas scat of government for the rich ind fertile county of Polk wo arrived at Grand Roude Valley, in which is situated tho In dian Agency under the supervision of Capt. Lafol lctC This is a prolific basin of several thouiand acres ,n extent, and is at present glittcrlug with golden grain ripe for harvest, cultivated and own- d by these dusky jrottget of '"Uncle Sam." The ioV appear to bo peaceable and industrious, but are hardly Chest or fieldian in manners, and dis "Vlay unmistakable signs of the "untutored mind" la the erection and adornment of their edifices havinc their dwellings and stable jammed togeth er, and the horse and dog mingling lovingly with t . he pappoose around the savory pot of catnaa aonp and dt Iectable dish of cricket pie. Their farms 'were devoid of cows, sheep or bogs, but tho plains "were dotted with cayuso horses of almost every xoneelvable jthado and color theso being the standard of wealth among the Indians. The Reservation is 20 miles from Dallas, and just within the border of Yamhill county. Froia the Agency to the Toil-Gate is 15 miles, "through a country mostly noted for Its magnifi- eent hills of verdant fern, impenetrable foresta of tall tree?, and innumerable aountala streams tearing along the gergss and thundering over the .Ticks, In th larger f these brooks the angler inay find trout in abwsdance and revel In the fasei tuiting sport of "yanking" them from their foam tog beds. (Mendcuball is a gorgeous yankist.) . . At fte ToTl-Gato the read strikes Salmon, river &n.l folUvs down that stream crossing it six times oi the way until within a few miles of the beach. Save ouo ford of the &almoa, this is per haps the finest mountain road in Oregon, or in the World. It is probable that the defects in the crossing meiitkmcd will bo repaired in a short titae, when excursionists can rely upon having an iXcelleist road the entire way. Arrhingwithmlhree mlka bf the beach, we left Salmon fiver and journeyed over a broad pra irie ef uedalatlng hills covered with tall fern and an nnd-Tgrowth of tender grass, until we arrived at the ceean side. Here, nestled wn among the perpendicular biils and inaeces- f,able cliffs of the mountains, is a bvtly valley of tome two hundred acres, teeming with a rich growth of luxuriant grass and occasionally inter spersed with small groves of firs, pinen and hem locks, affording ample protection from the stormy winds which frequently swept along the unprotect ed ahoro of OM Ocean, and adding an iuiiccriba ble charm to this little haven of repose. Here we could turn the hor?es loose without any fear of being deprived of their valuaMe. rviec., as the towering cliffs on the sid.' and rear and tho tur bulent roaring and lashing of lb j ub in front presented ioaariiiouBtaUle barriers to lir escape, and the grass femifhed ampb; fi f'r tiir-ab' istence.' fHe ta tfte iBoa-l- of th- is a large bay, a whuh ail kinds, U tilt wat-r fish :boand isi inexhaustable quantities, and where dieip!o of Isaac Walton, by the aid of a stal- ' wart Imliao and bis romantic dug-oct canoe, can aatisfj tls piscatorial desires to their fullest ex tent. Here oar party speut four or five days very pleasantly, and the only thought that marred the pleasure of the hours was that of so soon being compelled to exchange them for the toils and cares ftmr several occupations. The writer would suggest to all those who are compelled to follow sedentary employments, or sire suffering from indigestion and "night-mare to roll a.) their tents and skedaddle f r the sea coast, and for a week subsist on smelt, flounders, crabs, rock-oysters, muscles, seals, whales, sea- lions and all the other aqnatie animals, and if they -don't come back happy they can atop their paper, br raying arrearages. Woat ax Linus Said or Plastatio Birntaa, -A little before the commencement ef the Buffalo season on the plains this year, two Kiowa chiefs eame to Fort Hays, Mo., to obtain powder and ball. As they belonged to tho " peace party " of the tribe their wish was complied with. One of them then expressed a desire for " two, three, five bottles berry good medicine," but could not re member the namo of the article he wanted. It was finally recollected that the winter previously a couple of bottles of Drake's Plantation Bitters bad been given to one of the chiefs by an offloer lu the Fort, and it appeared that tho red-skin was eager for more. On asking him what he thought of the cordial ho promptly replied that it was ' berry bad stuff for Injun to take when no meat in wigwam it mado him so hungry but berry good when buffalo plenty, 'causa it giro him big appetite, and he eat, eat, eat, till he get fat an' strong." Probably a finer compliment was never paid to the famous vegetable tonic and restora tive than this bit ofbad English from an uosoph istieatcd Indian. It not only cures indigestion, but imparts, so to speak, a ela moron i appetite. Platko Oct. Why will newly married partbs eontinue to send notices of tlae happy event to the printer unaccompanied by a liberal supply of cash or its equivalent? Even a bushel of potatoes or a sack of onions would be more acceptable than nothing at all. We would suppose that If thcro is any time a man could gleefully aud joyously plank down the "shads" to tho printers for his labor and pains, it would be just after he had been linked iu the cocnubial chains with the fair and loving compauion who had promised to "lref honor and obey ' bis lrdhip, and wend his torn trowcrs crd sew on bis shirt buttons ! We bare no objection to publishing marriage notices in point of fact we are glad to 1 able to chronicle such happy cvvnts-but as it is generally of more Uauieliatc interest to the married f.ariice then. svlva. A gentleman in this vi cinity rcecircd a couple of buggies last week from the East for which he was taxed for freight the sum of $228 coin.
