On last "Wednesday nicht our c ty FuflVred another nevefo loss by fire. Altmit midnicht flames were discoverel issuing from the inide of the "liank Exchange" Saloon, on the corner ttf Second and Ferry streets, owned by Wil liam Gird, and long before our citizens were fairly aroued the whole building,, together xrith the barn and out-houaes on the lot, Vfre completely envelop! in flames, and beyond tho power of human aid to save from destruction. The flames shortly communi cated themselves to an adjoining building on the east, owned by I. Mercior, and from thence the fire extend! to the new Engine House of Albany Firo Company No. 1, and in a few minutes they, too. were a heap of ruins. The Fire Company were promptly at work with their engine, and did excellent service as long n there was any available water, but the wells adjoining were soon ex hausted, and then the engine was of no more service. This misfortune has demon strated the necessity for the immediate mak ing of gHd and capacious cisterns, bo that the engine can be ucd to advantage on such occasions. Without cisterns the Cre engine, though ever so complete an instrument in itself, is comparatively useless for the pur pose for which it was purchased. The loss of the three building, in the ag gregate, is estimated at about $9,000. The "Bank Exchange" and fixtures, including two billiard tables and a large stock of liq u r, was valued at 8,C'J0. and was Insured in the North British Company for $5,000. Mr. Mercier's buildings was valued at $7( 0. The engine house wa a nice, new building, and had ju-it been erected at great trouble and expense both to the Company and citi x;ns at large, and wis wurth probably, $S0O. Thii is a great misfortune to the "boy v as it deprives them f that which it will take great labor and expend, besides considera ble time to replace. From the fact that no one slept in the saloon and that there was no fire in the houe during the day, and al that a person was seen slinking away from the rear of the building a few minutes pre vious to the discovery of toe t;re, it is evi dent that it was the work of an incendiary. Stabbing Affrav. 0;i last Saturday raorn ng a difS'.-ulry ocured. between S. B. Westcott and Anio II tward, at the ferry landing opposite this city, resulting very se riously to one of the combatant. It ap pears that they are citizens of Benton coun ty, and brothers i -law, and that there has been ill-feeling between them fur s nic time, originating out of gome family difficulty. On Saturday they met at the ferry, when an angry altercation ensued, quickly followed by "blown; and in the struggle Weteott drew a butcher knife frutn some part of hi person and cut U oward three or four times, after w'.ich Mr. Andrew Hill, who was nciir by at the time the diEculty began, jumped in and separated them. Howard was brought to this cit7 and bis wound dressed by Dr. R. C. Hill, when it was ascertained that be had been cut badly in the right jaw and shoulder, and that one of the stabs had penetrated the left eye so as to destroy it. Mr. We-teott went to Corvallts and sur rendered himself to the authorities and, af ter a preliminary examination Ijefore Justice Robertson, he was discharged, it being the opinion of the examining magistrate that he acted in self defence. To People At Home. Persons who come to us for job work sometimes grumble be cause we do not work as cheap as the job offices in Portland and San Francisco. The larger amount of work done in city offices enables them to be equipped with machine ry which a country office would not be war rant! In obtaining, and hence their rates, especially if -determined to to be a rat, may run a little Tower than their country neigh born, but it should be borne in mind that the city office renders no particular aid in the development of the town and county, while the country office is a perpetual and invalua ble local help. There is a large amount of rnrlc which cannot be done outside of large 25ccs, bat the first duty both of business men and county -officers is to give their home establishments all the patronage which it has the facilities for performing. In that Xttij and that way alone can the country press be sustained in a manner to reflec Credit upon the commut-ity it represents. Teat Celebration. The various commit tees are diligently working to render our celebration on next Friday a magnificent af fair, and we feel ourselves fully warranted In asserting that their expectations will be more than realized. IVeJriist that the citi zen! of our county will turn out on that oc casion, and lend their countenances to make the celebration one V orthy of the occasion and our people. We learn from Foreman Webber that it is the intention to fully test the powers and capabilities of the Firo En gine on the ground during tho day. There Ss ali o a floating rumor that there will be a parade of mysterious Ku Iiluxcs, or Loyal Leagures, or something of the sort on the occai ion. ' ; ; . Last Summer our milliners manufactured their bonnets out of u cabbage leaf trimmed with three red pep per and a dried cherry, and fastened on with a horpo hair ; but wo observed a lady in church hut Sabbath wearing a bonnet composed of three highs and a bit of pink colored fog, and fastened to her cars with clouded zephers.
