r " A x i J. 'I i V 1 - J '1 i 1 9 f 7 SATURDAY MAT 15, 1869 Uaisbuqh. On last Saturday, through la J politeness of D. M. Thompson. Esq.. Mt wero invited to a seat in his buggy for a tice to HarrisWgh, to attend tho funeral of Sir. Thomas Martin, rasaing up through tho pleasant and quiet town of Peoria, Vfclch ii situated in a romantic grove on the "classic banks of the bright Willamette, and traversing some of tho finest and richest country in the -world, we arrived at Harris hatgk about noon, and "hung up" at the Merchant' Hotel, kept by J. Gore a very tplaisant and agreeable gentleman. Harris Iburgb. is a thrifty, growing and beautiful 'town, and contains aonio business houses irhich will compare favorably with any ' itore in Albany, whilo the privato residen- ces are generally neat, new, and some of 'them of superior construction. It is one of Ubt most extensive shipping points on the dipper Willamette; and tho country but bounding it is rich and productivo to a re xaarkabla degree. We predict a brilliant and successful future for that section of 'old Linn." The funeral of Mr. Martin was the largest we have witnessed in Oregon, there being a procession of vehicles about a half mile in length, besides about fifty per sons on horseback. The services were con ducted by the Masonic fraternity, of which deceased was a bright and worthy member. Grar.d Master Avery Smith, of Eugene, pre sided over the ceremonies, and tho most pro found attention was paid to the services by the entire concourse of people Deceased leaves a widow and ten children to mourn his loss, besides a large circle of friend in that locality, where he was known and C3. ttemtid for his many virtues. Itik. Our devils aro ma'mg a boat. Fact ! It will be know by tho euphonious appellation of "Gf.TIj," and is intend ed to run in te trade between tho Cali pooia brid a'nd Foster's mill dam. The boys w"ti launch it with, .appropriato core U tales this afternoon, at which a public Collation may be partaken of at each indi vidual's house within the city limits. They have also made arrangements with the pro prietors of the Albany Brewery and tho va rious saloons whereby any ono desiring to "take a nip" can be accommodated at the reduced price of ono bit per drink. The City Council, and Albany Fire Company with their engine appropriately decorated, headed by the Brass Band, and followed by 4a large and imposing procession of specta tors, are hereby invited to participate. Pe destrians are expected to walk, while ample arrangements have been ma for those who desire to. ride at their own expense. The hour for preparation will be signalized by a war viioop from the the throats of a delega tion cf Calipooia Si washes in undress uni form. Guests from abroad will be required to sleep and eat themselres, f.r which gor geous arrangements have been made at the Overland Hotel and Oro Fino Restaurant. Orator of the day, C. II. Alexander II. Stephens, Vice Presides t cf tho lata Confeder ate States." Such is the title of a work recently pub lished by Bancroft & Co., San Francisco. It presents a careful political analysis of the past, separating real from apparent causes of the late conflict, and furnishes to the American people an epitome of that bril liant era when 3Ir. Stephens stood the peer of the immortal triumvirate. Clay, WcLstcr and Calhoun, in the balls of our National Legislature ; and descending to a later peri od, gives those interior lights and shadows of the Civil War only known to those high oSceri who watched the flood-tide of revolu tion from its fountain springs, and which were so accessible to Mr. Stephens from his positioa as Vice President of the Confeder acy. . G. XT. Brock, Esq., is now canvassing this section of country to procure subscribers to this truly great work ; and we advise our friends to avail themselves of this opportuni ty to secure it. A Fatal Maladt. There is a species o fever raging in the family of Mr. Anderson Dcekard, of .Orleans Precinct, this county, which has bafHed all the skill and efforts of physicians, and proved fatal to a sad extent. Mrs! X'eckard was the first member of the family attacked, and she died in a few days. -A week subsequent to her death, Ruth El len, aged about eighteen, shared the sad fate of her mother ; and on last Monday an other daughter, Mrs. Snodgrass, of Harris burgh, was consigned to the narrow tomb, a victim to the same malignant disease. We understand that a son of Mr. Deckard, and also a couple of young ladies who were fre quently in attendance during the illness of the family, are at present dangerously af flicted with the same terrible and nameless courgc. - Albant Brass Band. The Band have lept constantly practicing until they have . UPW become a musical success, both as re gard the variety of tho pieces which they , play an I the manner in which they render J them. The "bojs" display a spirit of mag-' .;m:ir'4i1v iden ia organizations of that nature, as they have yolanteered to -"blow", on several occasions when, it was hardly expected of thVm, and their charges ere .sjq fsuall as to excite wonder at their lib eraiity. The Albany Brasa Band has now become so intimately identified with the "institution" of our city that it would de xnoralizo us to have it become defunct. h Wickedest Man in Linn county is he who will not read the advertisement - of P. C. Harper, in to days paper, and then go to his st are, examine, his goods, and pro rioanHe'lhenv equal to any ever brought to Albfiroyrti tetania selection, style, and fit ness for this market. Mr. Harper has used his we! known unexceptionable taste in purlha kg his rtocky and - ha has secured them, at prices which will warrant him in eeUine them at very low figures. We hope the people of this locality will give him a jjr rncduragement and patrQnage. r Mot'KTAi.v Waco.v Road Opix. Mr. Mar tin Luper has just returned from a trip to Fish Lake, and reports that tho Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Wagon Road is now open for travel from Albany to Ocho co Valley. There is snow for three or four miles this side of Fish Lake, but it is vory soft and disappearing rapidly; whilo tho entire routo ia comparatively frco from mud He also reports that the grass which was sown along the road by the Road Company is coming up beautifully, and thero wil soon bo an abundance of feed for stock. A gentleman has already started across the mountains with a drovo of cattle, and in a few days more a party of several persons will start from this city for Ochoeo Valley among whom aro Jacob Norcross, Col. N. S. Morgan, J. Linsey Hill and Wm.'S. Driggs tho two former to remain during tho sum mer, and tho two latter in search of health, recreation and sport. Match It. Ay, Messieurs of tho Faculty, urnish if you can from your repertory of medicaments, a compound or a simplo sub stanco that will produce tho same beneficent results that tho Plantation Bitters are producing in all parts of tho United States, tropical America, and tho West Indies, every day. What will this preparation do? Brief- y, it will replace debility with strength, rcgulato tho disordered liver, tono tho relax ed nerves, arrest the progress of emaciation, restore the appetite, relievo headache, cure lever ana ague, prevent tho evil effects of unwholesome, water, chaso away mental gloom, and mitigate or removo most of the physical troubles, peculiar to the gentler sex. Will any of tho officinal preparations do all thU, or latj this? If so, how is it that the tun rpiiW thom nil. nml mr flnii Im jnhcsitatind y in this widely advertised spe cific? Tue Engine uas Arrived". This was the cry that saluted our cars from every quarter on last Tuesday morning ; and we rushed down to the landing, with tho rest of the town, to eo tho "elephant." The engine is of tho Cuwon manufacture, ap parently almost new, and when cleaned up will doubtless present a beautiful appear ance. 1 lie cylinders aro eight and a half inches in diameter, and are calculated to throw three streams of water. Persons who have had experience in euvh matters cay that it is the finest and best hand engine cn the coast, and the members'of the "One- stcrs" are hugely pleased with her "make up" generally. The hose-carriage and hose aro entirely new, and there seems to be suf ficient of the latter to squirt all over towu. Messrs. A. Cowan, A. I lac Idem an, Jason Wheeler, John Suttle and S. Althuuso will leave this city on a reviewing expedition across the Mountains, intending to locato a route for the extension or the Cascade Moun tain Wagon Road through to Snake rier. As soon as the route is reviewed the road w'll be surveyed and located ; and as aoon thereafter a possible improvements will be commenced. This read will bo a vast bene fit to the people of the Willamette Valley, as it will be the only available wagon and stock route from this pcction to tho upper country, and a great deal nearer than any other known way to Snake River and Boise Citr. What a pity it is that professed re formists will attempt to drive, when their true pol icy would bo to telid, name and retrain. Is it not a shame that tho common poisoner and tha dealer in a pure preparation should only bo held to the same accountability by the authorities? And yot this is tho ease under tha present liquor laws There are many forms or auiusive stimuli used by tbo medical profession, and tho great object of tbo trustworthy physician is to obtain them un mixed with any deleterious article, llostettcro Stomach Bitters, ns already observed, has the rep utation of being tho purest preparation of its class at present manufactured, and was, therefore, eitsd as a caso in point. Is it just, is it fair, is it for the greatest good or tho greatest number that tho law should place this valuablo medicine on a par with fighting rum ? What sort of legislation is that which makes no distinction between a health-giving tonio and alterative and a life-con suming bnnor Truly, both Congress and our Stita Legislatures have much to learn upon this important subject. and the sooner thoy begiu to proflt by the palpa tio lessons of tho hour, the better it will be for the moral and physical health of tbo people. Un der the present contradictory, incongruous and nhort-stghten general and State laws affecting the liquor question, intemperance, with all its horrible consequences, is as sure- to increase and multiply as the sun is to generate miasma from a swamp, or flame to crow fiercer by feeding it with turpon tino. The subject is too broad to be discussed in a single article, and will be taken up again in these columns, with a view to throw more light upon It.
