DISCOVERY OP WHITE PINE,
A correspondent of the Virginia Enter'

eives an interesting account of tho discovery
of tho Whito Pine mines by an Indian
named Nappiass and one Leathers, a black
smith. The latter got some of the ore and
melted tho 6ilver out of it, thu3 proving its
richness. Tho correspondent then proceeds:
In my last, Leathers was left on his way
home after his first visit to tho districts, be
wildered with his discovery, unable to com
prehend it. Ho had been on tho Hidden
Treasure ledge all the time ho was knocking
off the specimens, with which ho and Nap
piass returned, heavily laden, to camp, but
the thouiht that all of the numerous seem
ing boulders were but the outcroppings of
one of the most magnmcent leugca yet dis
covered never entered his head. Ho put tho
specimens brought with him through the
test of the f orgs at such time as ho could es
cape observation, and always with tho samo
exciting xesult. His conduct began to ex
jcito the attention of his comrades. He be
came strangely mysterious. IMerchand, the
Superintendent, began to notice a sudden in
clination on tho part of Leathers for scien
tific inquiry, yet so cautiously did he always
approach his subject that they never divined
his object. Meanwhile Nappiass was su-
premely happy.

After who knows how many anxious days
and sleepless nights, Leathers aain eet out
for another s-isht of his tantalizing wealth
Yet onco on tho ground the samo bewildering
fears possessed him. He tramped azain and

felt that he could not find it. Again ne re

yet he had not dared to put a notice on the
ground for fear ho would miss tho ledge,
call attention to the discovery and loso it all.
How he concealed the matter from his com
rades so long is strange, but ho certainly
kept his secret, and Nappiass, in his new
found luxury, was faithtul and true.
TBS SECRET OUT AT LAST.
Finding that be consulted the oracles of
science in vain, that he was impotent to pluck
from the heiirts of the books about him the
mystery of his discovery, and unable longer
to resist, he took the superintendent, Jlarch-

was not long m comprehending the situation,
showed Leathers the vein matter and the
adiacent country rock, pointed out the
vein, its course, width, probable dip, etc
Thev immediately located it under the name
of the Hidden Treasure, and called the
the mountain Treasure nil!. They selected
25 pounds of rock, took it to Austin, had it
worked, and found it yielded $1 50 per
Txmnd, making 3,U0U per ton. Ibis was
the middle cf September, 18G7. So long
had Leathers agonized under his secret, ever
since the 4th of July preceding. Here I
leave him for the present.
OTHERS GET WIXD OF THE DISCOVERT.
Leathers and Marchand kept their secret
-so well in Austin that no one there knew
where the rock came from. It was not until
about the first of November following that
any one about the Monte Christo mill knew
what was up. J. E, Lindsley, "William 31c-
Cauley and F. . Eberbardt were the first
to ferret it out. They came over about Xo
rember 1st, and immediately located the
norm and south extensions ot the Hidden
Treasure. Linlley then located the Ice
berg, Hemlock, Pego nip, Vallejo and other
Jedges. .Lberhardt discovered the summit,
Aurora, William Penn, Franklin, Eclipse,
ana otiier veins, lnese discoveries soon
became known at the mill, and other men
working there, and in the mines around
about, ltathburn, Sproul, Drake, Robinson
and Crawford came over.
HEAVY SXOW FALLS.
"Within four days after Lindsley and others
came over, a lunou3 snow storm camo on,
stopping all work, cutting off their supplies
and compelling them to turn their attention
to provide some means of shelter rather than
to look for more claims. A log cabin was
quickly improvised out of the pine trees
with which the hill wa3 then covered ; by
great exertions some provisions was procured
trom tne mill, ana then they began to tramp
around in the snow again, looking for more
ledges. During this time toe Mammoth.

THE EEEEHABDT.
