Tnx Railkoxd. A meeting of the Board
of Directors was held last week, in Salem,
and considerable business was transacted.
Among other things we are informed that
they pt-ssed a resolution rescinding the reso
lution which they passed lost fall by which
the roai was made to deflect from Albany
and they adoptod a resolution, the substance
of which is, that if the citizens of Albany
and yicinity will raise $30,000, by subscrip
tions, they will consider the question wheth-
er or not they will run through Albany. "We
hope ttoso of our citizens who intend to do
something will loso no time now in subscrib
ing. "With proper efforts tho road may yet
to mads to run through Albany. Let property-holders
remember that if tho road shall
run here their property will immediately run
jtp from twenty-fiFO to qne hundred per cent.,
iid that we shall soon have a large and
thmins city j but tljat if tho road run
through the Sandridge route, property here
willtbf raciats from twenty-five to ono hun
dred per cent., and our city will soon be
some tenfold more dull and lifeless than it
is, and that half the houses will bo unten
anted, lie who owns $10,000 worth of
property here would really make more mon
ey would actually be worth more if ho
were to give tho railroad Company one-half
of it to have the road come here, than if he
retain it all and the road run through tho
Sandridge country.
Let the railroad come hero and Albany
will grow to be alarge city immediately;
let the railroad take the Sandridge route and
po one can tell how much it will dwarf, and
stunt, and decimate the city of Albany.
Friends, let us all put our shoulders to the
wheel; and we shall ultimately have the
pleasure of seeing the iron-horse go career
ing and snorting through Albany.
FiatMJ.x's Ball. rThere is now no longer
any doubt existing as to the success of the
coming Ball, to be given by the Albany I'ire
Company No. 1, on next Monday, the 22nd
of February that day made sacred to all
American hearts by its association with the
birth ot him who was "first in war? first in
peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen"--George
Washington. (But as the
immortal Father of his country is nut de
nominated as one of the Committee of Ar
rangements for this Ball we will not puff
him at present, reserving that for the lourth
of July.) All parties, ! without regard t"
race or parentage, or previous condition,"
to use the language of the Civil Rights Bill
are taking hold of the matter with great
earnestness of purpose and remarkable zeal;
and maay persons who never participate in
the "mazy dance" are lending material aid
and countenance to the undertaking. The
supper is to be composed of donations from
the members of the Company and other citi
zens who desire to thus favor the enterprise
and we are glad to say that many of our
most worthy and public-spirited citizens
have njunificently contributed edibles for
the occ8.;qn. The Committee on i'grub"
inform us that they ijave received sufficient
contribution? in that line to feed a multi
tude. The tables will bo beautifully and
tastefully arranged, under the supervision
pf a competent commjttee of ladies, in the
pld 31asonic Hall. In this connection we
are requested to state that on Monday morn
ing an express -wagon will be driven to the
houses of those from whom provisions are
pxpecteJ and convey the same to tho Hall
thus saving the kind donors any trouble of
delivery. A large number of tickets have
been already sold, and this fact leads us to
believe that the reduction of the price of
tickets from $5 to $3 was a judicious move
ment and will lead many to attend who
would otherwise have remained away. We
learn of quite a number who will be in at:
tendance from Corvallis and other neighbor
ing towns.
Success to the Fireman's Ball, say w.
P. S, "Ye junior" hereby returns his
acknowledgements to the officers of the Com
pany for a complimentary ticket to the ball,
with the assurance, that he will endeavor to
f.'put in appearance" on that mellifluous ocr
pasion.
Ax Aged Cqvblz. Mr. and Sirs. George
Humphrey, at present residents of this city,
if they both survive until the 20th of next
October will have been married fifty years.
They were united in marriage in Jefferson
county, Ohio, on the 20th day of October,
1819. Mr. H. is aged 71 and his wife 67,
and they are both enjoying remarkably good
health for persons of their advanced years
Mr. Humphrey haa been a life-long Demo
crat, an 4 is the father of thirteen children,
all of whqm, save one, have'remained true
to the political teachings and tenets pf their
parents. This patriarchal couple have been
for many years consistent professors of
Christianity and members of the United
Presbyterian church. May they live to cele
brate their "golden wedding" next October,
and many years thereafter, blessing their
children with their precepts and teachings
and their neighbors by their good examples.
Another Estimable Citizen Gone. It
again becomes our melancholy duty to re
cord th death of one of Albany's most es
teemed and uprighf citizens. Mr. James
BTedpatb,, of whom we spoke lastweek as be-
fng dangerously ill, was on last Wednesday
evening summoned from earth's cares and
troubles tq jqin that immunerable caravan
of pilgrims to that f'land beyond the flood of
time. , He was a singularly upright and
sterling man. and citizen, and his demise
will leare a vacancy in the social and busi
ness spheres of Albany which it will be dif
ficult to 11.; He leaves a widow and two in
teresting childrenthe former and ono of
the latter of whom are at present suffering
from the same ailment which has bereft
them of their dearest protector and earthly
friend.: ; .
The remains of Mr. R. were attended to
their se pulture by Albany Fire Co. No. I.
of which body he was a worthy and beloved
member. ,

he proposes to sell at Portland prices, freight

WAtTHAM Watches. We flesire to direct
the attention of our readers to the advertise
ment of tho American Watch Company, in
another column. This Company is the pio
neer of Watchmaking in the United State,
and has grown in the short space of fifteen
years to tho largest Watch manufacturing
esiaousnment in mo worm. xms laci, in
connection with another important fact
that their Watches aro now selling at less
prices in greenbacks than tho gold prices
asked beforo tho war illustrates tho great
success of thp Company.
At Jefferson. Our readers will find
among tho new advertisements, a dissolu
tion notice of Jacob Conscr & Son, of the
Jefferson Mills ; also a settlement notico of
Mr. Conscr. Also, an advertisement of
Messrs. Conser & Burnett, of tho Jefferson
Mills, offering the highest market prico, in
coin, lor wheat. They ,want 50,000 bush
els. Mr. Conser is one of Oregon's old and
well-known citizens, aud what ho says may
bo regarded as 'tgoapel.
The Ball. Wo acknowledge tho receipt
of a complimentary ticket to the Anniversa
ry Ball of tho Albany Firo Company, to be
given on the 22d inst. While it will bo
impossible for us to attend, for sundry rea
sons some of which will readily occur to
our friends yet we desiro to say that we
wish the Albany Fire Company tho most
complete success in all laudablo effort to
promote the objects they hato In view.
A Fine Establishment. Header, in pass
ing along the north side of First street, did
you ever observe that magnificent and pon
derous array of goods so tastefully and en
ticingly displayed on the countcri, shelves,
and in the windows of Foster's Brick Build
ing? Well, if you hav'nt you ought to. for
there i$ where Messrs. Kosenstein &Mendt
son sell all ind$ of dry goods, clothing,
boots and shoes, cheap for cash.
An Error. Last week wo published an
account of the birth of a son to our wqHhy
friend Kcifer, of the Albany Brewery. To
use the language of another, this was a
"sex ual mistake." The notice should have
read lift daughter." Such a mistake as
that makes quite a difference in a lifetime.
Farm Sold. M. C. Miller, who ad
vertised his farm for sale in the Jemoirat,
has recently sold it to John A. Conscr, of
Jefferson, Marion county. The farm con
sisted of 602 and &M00th teres, and was
sold for fclO per acre. We believe Mr. Mil
ler contemplates moving to California.
Hats. As spring's smiling countenance
comes ushering in it will be well to send to
Meussdorffer A Bro., at Portland and get a
magnificent spring and summer covering
for your craqium3. "A word to the wise,"

SPECIAL NOTICES.
How a Decline is Produced.
Pure blood makes us well, bad blood makes us
sick Vapors from poorly digested food in the
blood are condensed upon the various organs, and
serve to make them graw.br repair their waste.
Organs made with a greater or less proportion of
such materials cannot be sound. . If the bad con
dition of blood continues but for a few flays pr
weeks the body will be out of sorts ; and if it con
tinues, the whole of the body will in time bere
newed with imperfect blood, and the health bad j
it is in a decline popularly called a consumption.
Now Brandreth's Pills penetrate the whole mass
of blood, causingthe expulsion of impurities ; the
body feels relieved from a single dose what then
maybe expected from twenty? By. continuing
their use the whole of the blood in time becomes
purified, and the body reconstructed from good
material, the decline stopped, and a new lease of
life secured.

THE LIQUORS OF COMMERCE.
Poisonous Stimulants in the' Sic): Rooi.
THE VILE AItT OF ADULTERATING
alcoholio liquids was practiced In Greece and Koine
more than two centuries ago, aud then, as now
tho Medical Faculty denounced it, and lamented
the difficulty of procuring pure and wholesome
stimulants for the Hck,
IIippocbatks called attention to ho tripkq of
the Athenian vintners 'four centuries before tho
Christian Era. Ualkn, somewhat later, sternly
rebuked the wino merchant of Homo for tamper
ing with the juice of tho grape. Thoro was bo
distilled liquors iu those days, and many of the
subtle poinons at preseut used by liquor mixers
were unknown, but considering their knowledge
and opportunities, tho adulterers of the "danio
agea" showed considerable adroitness in their no
farious calling. Lead, Unto, gypsum, and sca
water were put into new wine by tho Roman deal
ers, aud it was boiled and left to cool in luetal
vcsncls. by way of improving its taste and giving
it transparency. To this day some of tho Medit-
eraneau wines aro subjected to a similar process.
All the wine of Europe are wore or loss adulter a-
ted before they leave, "first brands," and as to the
stun commonly retailed In th.li oountry under tho
uaincs of Port, Sherry, Madeira, Ac, Ac, aloe-
juioe, decoction of logwood, powder of ratcchu.
alum, plater of parls, lead, litharge, carbonate of
toda, o of nhnondu, elder, and bad rum, may bo
wcutioned as among their pleasant ingredients.
But it is in tho concoction of "spirituous liquors"
that tho adulterators of this generation particu
larly excel. The tricks of the Oreek and Roman
vintners werejmere child's play fo theirs. Ftryeh
nlne, sulphuric ecid, sugar of lead, jalap, i-piates,
and a variety of pungent alkalies are among the
delU-aoH.'4 that enter into the compoiltiuti of ordi
nary 'bar-room, liquorn," and some of ihc'm ciuiUt
altuoiit wholly of peroiciou chouiicals with a
small admixture of unrectificd spirits. No won
der, under such circumitances, that tavern brandy
rum, gin and wbUkv, carry death and madness
in their train. No wonder, also, (4ur jikyicitnt
hart htt etnfidte in A liptorc fvmmtret, anti
are afraid (u thtm.
Stimulants, however, are a; necessary lo medi
cal practice a febrifuges, or cathartics, ps ano-
dynes, or altcjativps, or a.ny other of the recognis
ed specifics for djicase. TLe great question in.
Vi d purt itimul-tnl b kad t We say if rait. We
assert that MOSTBTTEK'tf STOMACH DITTKKS

U, bewever, something mora and better than this,
to-wit, a Judiciously medUattd stimulant, in which
the qualifying iagredienl are the 6nct stomachic,
aperient, alterative, and anti-billiuut herb, roots,
and guiai. Thexe vegetable conttituetits modify
and control the effect of the sfirituouf elements'
and render the Litters the safest, mildest and
meit effective in vigor on t at pretent in use.
I or the melancholy consequences which ensue
from the sale of unwholesome compounds bearing
the names of the various spirituous liquors, the
powers that be are in some degree responsible.-
Deriving, as it docs, a large revenue from the im
portation and manufacture of alooholie bv craves,
it is manifestly the duty of the Uearral Govern
ment to protect the people as far as possible against
the introduction of ;ofon lata their daily drink.
Still more imperativs is tho obligation to shield
the sick from the pril of being killed or injured
by pernicious excitants, administered as tnedlrimet.
Ioipection and taxation oaght, in this matter, to
go hand in baud, and iu all eases ot adulteration,
the adulterated article instead of being taxed
should be dtrvytd. Every tincture and extrae
containing, or purporting to contain alcohol,
should be examined by competent scieutifie men,
and not permitted to go into the market until lis
purity bos beu authoritatively certified. The
sanitary interests of the community should be
paramount to the financial i&tcrests of the Govern
ment the public health being of infinitely more
importance than tho public revenue. Hut no such
protective supervision is exercised either by the
central tower at Washington of by the Slate gov
eminent. The Internal Hcvenup assessors mud
collectors simply demand their tax, knowing noth
ing about the whoics'jiueneM or UDwboIcsomettesj
of the article upon which it is levied ; the Custom
House Collectors insist on payment of the duties
required by law on imported liquors, but how much
or how little foreign poison there may be in each
cask or puncheon it is not their business to ascer
tain. 'Congress seems to have entirely overlooked
its function, of public protection in legislating on
the liquor question. Stale Legislatures havebfen
equally remiss. Many of tbem have tried prohibi
tion and failed. No ope of them, so far as we are
aware, hs endeavored to mitigate the evils of
which they have all complained, by instituting a
rigid system of inspection.
We should be glad to see sujh a systea adopted
as an experiment. It would at least prevent un
principled dealers from palming off upon the work
ing class.es, to an unlimited extent, the fiery fluids
which fill our jails, poor-houses, hospitals, lunatic
asylums, aud innumerable graves with miserable
victims.
Were suph a regulation in force we shoul4 have
no need to explain the nature and value of our
preparation through the public press. The report
of the ipspc; ting oncers would bo qur sufBcieqt
voucher a stronger adyertisemput than any we
could franco. Gladly would. w welcome the official
agents of the Government State or Federal to
our factory, and challenge their closest scrutiny,
their sharpest tests. Aa inspection law of the
kind indicated would, if competently administered,
be one of the most uscfuj enactments ever placed
on our statute books. It would be conservative
alike of health and morals. . "
When the British Government literally tendered
opium to the Chinese at the point of the bayonct
compelling (hat ubfortuqate nation lo make its
election between hopeless war and a demoralizing
and deadly poison, the United States, cned shame.
We denounced the conduct of Great Britain. as
unchristian and inhuman. So it was; but ig oir
Government guiltless if it permits the people pvej
whom it should exercise a paternal jurisdiction to
be poitoned in the dark T The deadly properties
of opium are known. It cannot be taken unwit
tingly, under the supposition that it is something
clue. Its taste and smell betray it, and all who
buy it understand precisely what they purchase.
But this is not the case with adulterated liquors.
The taste, the cqbr, the aroma c,f undeteriorafed
brandy, gin', rum or whisky is often so closely
simulated by the expert liquor mixer, ' that even
connoisseurs are deceived, to say nothing of the
ignorant and inexperienced. Nothing short' pf
scientific analysis can establish tho difference be
tween the genuine and the bogus article, and the
knowledge of this fact einboldous the mixers to
flood the markets with their atrocious compounds.
JThe sum and substance of the'whole matter is
that the standard liquors of cqminer.ee, pure and
undefined, are not procurable in this country, and
we very much doubt if they can be obtained, in
the ordinary coursq of trade, on tho other side of
the Atlantic. Even if they could, they are not
proper for invalids. JJnmixed alcohol is aot a
medicine. The spiritupus principal, however pure,
must bo toned and modified, and its exciting pow
er subdued by skillful medication before it is fit to
be exhibited as a preventive, a remedy, lor a re
storative. This has been effected in IIOSTET
TEIt'S BITTERS. The preparation is a perfect
ly safe and efficacious tonic, alterative, corrective,
and anti-bilious medicine nothing mare and noth
ing let. " -;- -
