Ufa Mmomi SATURDAY JANUARY 23, 1869. A Word to FaizxDs. The present is a time when business men generally try to set ttle op. In common with others we are com peiled to present and collect bills. Wo owe ' icaae to others ; they expect their pay; and if our friends will pay us wo, can pay those whom we owe. We are making out bills against those owing us, and we hope, as they tx& generally small, tbey will be promptly ,Y4nceDed whea presented. ABBOTT Jt BROWN. Tax DsiocRAt. Some one his, truthfully tmld that 'misfortunes tread on each other's liceis'." ' For some tine past much of the time of the editor of the Democrat has been occupied in taking care cf a sick wife ; and for come days past our partner, Mr. Brown, las been so ill as to be unable to be at his as usual. - For these, and sundry other "reasons not necessary to be enumerated, we I are concluded to issue the Democrat in talf sheets for a short time just how long trill depend somewhat on circumstances. Some country newspapers suspend, or is wie a half sheet frequently; but this is most Lyarious and reprehensible. Our readers will bear, witness that we never do so except n here it is absolutely unavoidable. .Tax Opposition. We always knew that if a permanent line of opposition steamers a the Willamette, could once be fairly es tablished, that immense benefit would result to the citizens of the upper counties, as aeon sequence. A few facts will make this appar ent to the most casual observer. On the first of November, 1SC6, the advertised rates or price per ton for freights charged by the Pxple's Transportation Codpany, from the cc unties of Lane, Linn and Benton, were as follows : .... . t. $12.00 13.00 15,00 17.00 1S.00 20.00 Dvtrm. $ 8,00 9.00 Pcrtland to Albany, , ... CorvaUia, .'..- peorU, m . HarrUbarg, ; . v . Lancaster, m Eugene City, 10.00 11.00 12.00 14.00 These rates were adhered to until it was known that an opposition boat was coming ca, when the prices for freight of this same P, T. Co. were reduced just one-half; and arV now at less than half the rates charged by tiera before the opposition came on the WillameHe river. , Linn county ships annu ally; 20,000 tons .of freight, to and from Portland. On this large amount there is at least $5,00 per ton saved to the people of Lu n county, this year, by the building of the Eteaxder Success " a boat which cost lesfl . than $20,000. Th,e people of Linn county, alone, to say nothing of the other con nties that are equally benefitted in pro portion to the amount of their shipments will savej this year, the immense sum of $103,000, in gold, that would.otherwise have bee: i paid to this overgrown monopoly. -JTe have before us a circular relative to the Incorporation and organization of the ' Willamette Falls Canal and Lock Compa ny,' a Company organized for the pur pose of constructing, at the Fails of the Wil lamette, a Canal and Locks, for the purpose of f icilitating and cheapening the transpor tation., of freight and passenger up and dowr the Willamette river. When these Locks shall be completed, and a boat can run direct from Albany, and other points on tl Upper Willamette, to Portland, a still farther reduction will be made; and there is no good reason why freight cannot be trinf ported between Albany and Portland for $1 per ton.. Albany should own a boat ; and the busi ness men could not invest to better advan tage than in building one for their own use. Tat Teather or 18G3. A correspond ent writing to the Polk County Signal says, there were .during the year one hun dred nndieighty-two clear days, one hundred and eighty. tour v cloudy days, eighty-seven rainy Jandeight snowy days, tvery month in the year had some cloudy, and all but August hadome rainy days, August had twenty-six clear days which is more than any or-ber month eonseqaently, the cloudy weather in that month was less. Therx is no mistake about it, Plantation Bittxrs will ward off Fever and Ague and all kindred diseases, if used in time No family need suffer from this distressing complaint if they will keep Plantation Bit tirs in the house, and use it according to directions The most important ingredien in this medicine is Calisnya or Peruvian Bark, which is known to bo the finest and purest tonic in the vegetable kingdom. The extract of this Bark is the active principlo of all the good Ague and Fever Medicines prescribed by intelligent doctors. Calisaya Bark is used extensively in tho manufacture of Plantation Bitters, and we dare say owe their popularity mostly to that fact Died raosi Old Ace. One of our oldest citizens, Jcptha Markham, departed .this life on Sunday last, (the lGth inst.) aged eighty-seven years, at tho residence of one of his sons living in this county. The first vote he cast was for Jefferson. He died o old age ; and he died very easily something as one fulls into a profound sleep. Linn Countt Taxes. Sheriff Irvine last week collected 10,156,07 from tho tux-puy ers of Brownsville, llarrUburg and Peoria. This will go into the strong box of the Stuto Treasurer and will be retired from circula tion, unless a special session be called, and an appropriation bo made. Fire at Salem. The Unionist of tho 10th says: - About twelve o'clock last Satur day night an alarm of tiro was sounded which started the firemen out in a hurry. A house on Commercial street, between State and Ferry streets, occupied by Police man Coffey, was burning in ths mof. The flames were soon extinguished and no great damage was done." From the Cincinnati Commercial, July 28, 1803. Temperance in All Things. ilLL GOOD MEN, ALL CHRISTIANS, all patriots, are advoeato of temperanee. : In deed, publio sentiment is unanimous on this point, although there may be difference! of opinion as to the best method of accomplishing the desired end. Temperance means moderation, and though technically applied to abstinence from tbe use 'of intoxicating fluids, has a much broader slgnlfioa tion than that The Individual who abjures all distilled and fermented stimulants i deadly poi son, may, nevertheless, bo Intemperate in bis lan guage, in bis pursuit of wealth, In bis eating, in his political opinions, his prejudices or bit apje- intemperatoly. , There are certain eBthutiasts, for example, who demand too entire aboluhmcut of alcoholic stimu lants. Against these ultra-prohibitkmUta the great body of the medical profession takes decided ground. Nine-tenths of tbe physicians and sur geont of tbe civilised world prescribe alcohol, and medicines of which aloohol Is a cardinal ingredl ent, in their practice. They say that it U one of the most important articles in tho materia medico, and that nothing can supply its place. Sometimes tbey administer it neat, sometimes diluted with water, sometimes medicated ; and while admitting, as any sane and honest man admits, that it Is, morally and physically, a poison, when taken to escess, tbey argue that under certain conditions, and la certain cases, its use is not only advisable, but ecnlial to the preservation of life and the restoration of health. Believing that the most profound pathologists and physiologists of the age underttand the mat ter better thaa ton-profeiUina!, we accept their doctrine and practice as philosophic and correct the more especially at tbe result of their treat ment confirm their theories. ' Tbe rational friends of temperance, side by side with whom we stand, frankly concede that alcohol is sometimes necessary at a snaltary agent. Mr. Greeley grants this in a recent article published la f Tks Imdeptndtnt," and only fanatics, whose teal is untempered by knowledge, venture to deny it. Here, however, a difficulty occurs. The liquors of commerce are so generally adulterated that it Li perilous to give them to sick persons, All the brandies, rums, gins, whiskies, are more or less em poisoned. Each contains tome Ingredients which provoke a thirst for ardent spirits and thus drunkards are made. Under the c (routs- stances, scnviUe "temperance men" should be tbe first to appreciate the importance of a pure stimu lant fur medical utc. This dci id era turn is supplied to the public and the faculty In the form of IIOSTKTTER'S STOMACH BITTERS, which is not merely a bolcsome stimalent but aa Invaluable vegetable topic, corrective and alterative la manufactur ing, advertising and selling it for sanitary pur poses only tbe proprietors claim to be contribu ting a tonod and substantial plank to the temper ance platform. Thcie U a good deal of cant talked and written by some of the self-elected reformers of the mor al of mankind. It is tbe misfortune of many of there persons, and of their disciples, to confoand tbe use of diJTuible stimulants at an antidote with their misuse as a beverage. Tbe spirit by which tbey are animated U a spirit of blind bigot ry and intolerance, akin to that wbkh, in the old en time, led to tbe massacre of BL. JJertbolomtw, the eresade against tbe Albigenses, and many oth er foul wrongs committed in tbe name of religion. Thomas Hood, the wittiest of philosophers, and the most philosophical of wiu, characterized that narrow-minded and aggressive piety which Is con tinually pectin at whatever does not strictly con form to its peculiar ritual, as tnagpkty and there are a good many birds of tbe magpie feather who ould fain obtain the exe'utire control of the whole temperance flock. The doctrine of tbese individuals lacks consls teney. Tbe same arguments If they deserve the name which tbey urge against the employment of alcohol aad alcoholic tonics in tbe treatment of disease, or for iu prevention, apply with still greater force to most of the favorite specifics of the faculty. Yet they bare not a word to say against opium, mercury, strychnine, Iodine, qui nine, and other deadly poisons which are prtscrih ed daily by thousands of medical meW Are these ess deleterious than tbe pore alcoholic stimulant used as a medium for diffusing the healing influ ence of wholesome herbs and roots tbrourh tbe Wf system? The nort a neom promising ultra-prohibitionist mutt admit that they are not. But he bat a rejoinder in reserve. , Tbe powerful medicanU referred to are preseirbed In limited doses. Bounds are affixed to their ose by those who recommend them. , And U it not the same, we ask, with regard to medicated spirituous stimu lants t Every bottle of IIOSTETTEB'S STOM. ACJl BITTERS, for example, is accompanied by direction! for its use. These diret tions are as clear and explicit a! those in a physician's prescription, and even if they happen to be violated' through inadrertarce, too serious consequences ensue. A double or tripple dose of laudanum, or of strych nine, or of a mineral salt, may kill, and very often does kill, but a fl re-fold, or even ten-fold, dose of the BITTERS would produce no inch terrible ef fect. Opium it an infinitely stronger intoxicant than any variety of alcohol, and it extensively used to produee intoxication at well ai In medical treatment. Why thtn is opium recognized at a useful curative by the tame parties that utterly proscribe all alcoholic preparations ? It is always best to be consistent. , , . Bigoted prohibitionists would do well to learn a few lessons from Sacred History. The patriarchs and prophets of tbe old dispensation and the apostles of the new, were not one idoa men. They did not hold that the abuse of the thing wot aa argument against its use The cultivation of the vine as a material for the manufacture of wine' Is sanotioned by tho Scriptures. It Is commanded to be given to "him that is ready to perish," and also to "those that be of heavy hearts." Bad wine and wine taken in excess, is made tbe type of Heaven's wrath, as the Vwine of astonishment," of "rapine," of "fury," of "affliction." Ac, but good wine is not only not proscribed, but is forci bly recommended in many pagos of the EiUo- Some commentators insist that the articles thus recognized by Divine Authority contained no alco hol that it was unformented juice of the grape f but as it is ealled "strong drink", in Proverbs and elsewhere, and is expressly stated to be "gladden ing," this construction is evidently contrary to the text. Tbe true friends of temperance resort to no such sophistry as this. They admit that a diffusive stimulant is a good thing when judiciously applied, and this, and nothing more than this, Is the argu ment of the truly temperate. ; PREPARED AND SOLD, BY V Lxi I HOSTETTER & SMITH, ; PITTSBURG, PENN.
