Once more the re lentless1 cycle of Time has performed its ant Dual evolution, and another twelvemonth is "numbered among the things that were" since last we greeted our kind patrons with "A Merry Christmas.'' Since then the eyes of some of those who read our friendly greet ing have closed ia eternal sleep, and their spirits have been wafted into the region of the vast Unknown "beyond the swelling food." Others have sought "other climes jsnd other scenes," in search of vigorous beikh. or in pursuit of phantom fortunes; and a 'goodly number , of the( youth of both sexes have discovered the fruition of their hopes and joys in the nuptial knot ; while the greater number are still nestled in the rich valleys and alone: the verdant nlains, content with the comforts of home and pros peTO is la-tbe products rni Irons , ofj their honejttoil; And wUIe ell these scenes have been enacted upon the domestic stage of life and - around .the social hearth-stone, the march of public improyement throughout our thrifty .young Commonwealth has been striding, along at a rapid rate, clearing the tray; fop greater progress and benefits in the comiag twelve months, than our State has fjef yet enjoyed.; . ;; Aibixt Leg is l at c be .-An attempt was laLle by tho 'impeachment, managers" to bring that matter again before the house on lajst f'atardaj night, ba it was summarily frowned down, by a vote of the body, l'be remainder of the evening was devoted to dis casilug Whitney' "universal suffrage hill?1 and irhen a call for the. previous question brpn;tt the bill to its final passage, a call of th 3 house elicited the overwhelming in formation that the body was without a quo rum," and consequently could not, pass upon the. b: 11 ; The members, after 'staring in al most blank amazement at each other for the epace ef five minutes, adjourned amid storms .of diegust.. Of course old ""Santa Claus" fully t nderstands that sort of thing; and no child "frill fail to find its little stockings jammed, crammed and rammed full of good ies and pretty things on Christmas morning. Go in, "Chris? Cringle!" SATURDAY Peterson's Magazins for January is al ready out ; the most brilliant we havo ever seen. On last Monday evening about six o'clock, out citizens were Btartled by the alarm of "Fire," which was discover od to bo at tho house of Mr. J. E. Rentier, on tho corner. of Locust and Fourth street; but, after a largo crowd of pooplo had col looted at tho scene of tho fire, it was found to bo occasioned by the burning of the soot iu the chimney of tho fire-place. A huge blazo rose many feet above tho house, cast ing a bright glare upon the sceno for several blocks around. We have watched the course of so many distrodHod, emaciated and forlorn dyspeptics, of worn out and prostrated females, who havo tiikon a new lease of life, and gradually received vigor, strength, health andtbopow er of social pleasuro from tho effects of Plantatiox Bitters, that wo aro not sur prised at the testimonials daily received.
