Dead On last Monday Drs. Rice and
Gray of this city, and Dr. Smith of Peoria,
performed the operation of amputating the
the leg of Mr. J. II. Lines recently man
gled and crushed by a wagon running over
it and on la-t Wednesday evening lie died.
There is no doubt but that he would have
- died from the effects of the wound if ampu
tation had not been performed, and there
was a bare possibility of earing bis life by
the operation ; but unfortunately the age of
the man and the severity of the case doom
ei the hopes of hi friends to bitter disap
pointment. Mr. Lines was 67 years old ;
was at one time Clerk of Linn County, and
was universally respected by bis friends and
aequaintences. lie leaves an estimable
family to mourn his fate.
Crxu Meeting To-Night. There will be
a mating of the Albany Democratic Club at
the Court House at 7 o'clock this evening,
when business of great and momentous im
portance will be transacted. We trust that
a full attendance of members will be there,
so that business can be conducted witli
spirit and facility. All the members of the
"bloody Kcklux K!an," and "Price's
army," and ' Forests raiders," etc.. etc.,
are expected to be present. Radicals can
come if they choose, but will be required to
take back seats, as this in to !e a White

Accidest. We learn that one day last
week 2. little soa of 5Ir. John R. Smith, liv
ing sear Lebanon, fell on the edge of an axe,
- while chopping wood, and cut his forehead
in to the skull bone. It made a horrible
gash, some three inches in length, across his
forehead, and endangered his life for several
days, but it is now thought be will recover.
Pic-Xic. We understand that a school
pic-nic was held over the river, in Benton
county, yesterday. The Albany Brass Bar.d
"tooted" on the occasion. A pleasant time

we inadvertently neglected to stato that our
worthy friend, Mr. Olney Fry, jr., received
the first premium on a Seed-sower and Cul
tivator Combined, and also tho first premium
on tho same machine as a Cultivator. Mr.
Fry's machines aro generally regarded as
tho most practical and cheap invention of
any now in the market, and we are glad that
they wcro so well appreciated by thoso who
wero constituted Judges of 6ucU matters at
tho Stato Fair.
WiLtAMKTTE Farmer. Wo havo received
the prospectus of tho 14 Willamette Far
mcr," an agricultural paper t be published
at Salem, on January 1st. next, in the in
terest and under tho auspices of tho Oregon
Stato Agricultural Society. Jas. II. Douth
it, John Minto and Jos. Magono aro the
Publishing Committee. Our Stato certainly
needs one good agricultural paper, and we
hope the farming community will lend this
enterprise their hearty and warm support.
Accident. We learn from tho Unionist
that on last Friday, as Dr. Alexander and
Hon. T. Davis, were coming from tho Peni
tentiary in a buggy, tho horse became fright
ened at children in front of tho Institute,
and Dr. Alexander was thrown from the
buggy. He luckily escaped with a few
alight bruises, though ho was for several
days prevented from occupying his scat in
the Legislative Assembly.
Adjocsxuext. The Legislature proba
bly adjourned last evening, as their stipula
ted 40 days wero up at that time ; but we
learn by a private note from Mr. Abbott
that it is probable tho member will con
clude to hold over during next week, at
their own expense, in order to finish up
some important business which bhould be
attended to immediatly.
Religious Intelligence. We are author
ized to state that Rev. S. G. Irvine Iihh con
sented, in compliance with an invitation
from tuudry person, to deliver a discount
at the United Bre&byterian Church, in this
city, to-morrow morning, on the subject of
Baptism, and the Xcw Version of the Scrip
tures. Pencil asc or Inns. The West Side Rail
road Company have purchased from the Na
tional Iron Company, -119 bars of railroad
iron enough to lay one and one-fourth
miles of track.
A Hero in Town. George Sylvester, the
boy who has gsined uch a vat notoriety as
an Indian captive, is now sojourning with
his ie!er, Mrs. Caldwell, in this city.
Progressing. The Railroad U graded
over three miles South of Salem. Thev are
pushing the wrk through, rapidly, hating
now between 400 and 500 Chinamen at work.
