Asricultural Association, to be awarded at its third annual Fair, to be held at their Fair Grounds, one mile south of Albany, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thurs day and Friday, September 22d, 23d, 24tb, and 25th; 1S6S. The following named gen tlemen are the officers of the Linn Co. Agri cultural Association : President, A. llack leman ; Vice President, E. II. GrifEn ; Sec retary, James Elkins ; Marshal, M. Luper. The Directors are : E. II. Griffin, D. Fro man, M. Luper, Jesse Parrish, Allen Par ker, S. Montgomery. We Tisited the Fair Grounds on Wednes day last, and gleaned the following facts : Some new buildings hare been erected for the better accommodation of stock. The race track has been entirely enclosed, and the track is in most excellent condition. We presume it cannot be excelled on the coast. The following named horses are now on the grounds in process of training, viz : Bunninj horses Nancy Jane March, Red Jacket, and Flying Billy, all owned by Wm. Gird. Also, Mr. G. is training a 3-year old mare owned by Mr. Riley of Al bany. Stonewall Jackson, owned by Thom as Hardy. Doodley, a filly owned by E. C. Hurling. Limber Jim, owned by It. Stin net. JeST. Davis, Big John, Peytyna and Slander, owned by L. C. Younger of Lane county. Trotlinj horses Wm. Gird has one but riot yet named. Silver Tail, owned by A. J. Thayer of CorvlU. ALe, . owned bj John Uurd. Mr. Wallace is training Com et, Juni' Lady Jeosie, Belle Brandon, Lady ThoraeJup-Jake, Nelly, Oregon John, Blackbird, Bald Hornet and Vermont. The four last named horses are owned by other parties. It is known that other hordes will soon be on the grounds. Wm. Gird has three pacers in training in addition to those already mentioned. As some have expressed surprise that we did not, some time ago, publish the Premi um List, we will state that the copy wa3 not - furnished us until this week ; the Board of Directors, however, arc Mamele3 in the matter. We are glad that so much interest i3 being manifested in the Fair. All classes of citi zens, and especially mechanics andfar- mcrs, cannot well spend too much time or take too deep an interest in the Linn County Agricultural Fair. We know, and admit that there are some evils connected with Fairs ; but their general tendency is exceed ingly beneficial to any community. Through them the various kinds of domestic animals are vastly improved ; inventors are stimula ted to extra exertion ; and every department of agriculture, the mechanic arts and the various ramifications of housewifery and domestic economy receive a fresh and healthy impetus. Let all do what they can to make our next Fair the best old Linn has yet bad. STATE ORPHAN'S AID SOCIETY. Salem, Aug. 18, 1863. Mer. Abbott 4c. Ilrourn. I would infurm the public through your paper that there will be a Fair held in Salem on the 24th and 25th of September, for the purpose of raising money for tbe "Oregon Children's Aid Society," an association of benevolent ladies whose worthy object is to provide for the many orphan and friend less children in our midst. This Society desire co-operation from all parts of the State, and money and articles suitable for the Fair can be left with Mrs. Jobn Barrows, who is Vice-President of this Society for Linn county, or with Mrs. E. II. GrifSn. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Parrish have donated ten acres of valuable land as a building spot for the Home, and tbe Society have some twelve hundred dollars of available means, and are negotiating with mechanics to commence building immediate ly. This is a good work for the people of Linn to aid, and it is hoped that the ladies of Albany and yleinity will join in this common cause for good. By order of the Board. MRS. J. LJ PARRISH, Pres't. MRS. JOHN MDORES, Treas. Mas. S. A- Clarke, Sec'y. A Bkautifcl Design. Perry Miller, of the firm of Miller A Br.o., marble cutters, has exe cute 'on a marble slab a kneeling figure of the youthful .fudge of IsraeJ, Samuel, which in artis tic finish and 'design, equals anything of tbe kind we have ever seen in Oregon, The figure is clear cut and symmetrical, tbe features regular and natural, and the posture graceful in the extreme, i'erry is undoubtedly a natural artist, and with the requisite practice,' would become an honor to the art of sculpturing. There are some other beautiful specimens of work at the shop, perform ed by the elder brother, Ira M. Magnolia Mills. These mills, which for some time past have been idle, will start agai rteit week, so we are informed. They "liave been thoroughly overhauled and im proved ; and the quantity of flour which they are able to manufacture daily will be greatly increased. We hope the Messrs. Foster will be amply remunerated for the additional expense which . they have incur red. t . Dr. O. P. S. Whilo wo write this the atmosphere is filled with smoke from the mountains. This morning (Sept. 1.) at five o'clock tho air was so com pletely Buroharged with smoke and fog that one could not discern a roan twenty yards distant. The sun is invisible by day, unj the moon and stars by night. Every thing and everybody looks gloomy and dismal. Such a time has not been witnessed in Ore gon sinco 1840, so we aro told by 'old set tlers. . This smoke is caused by tho burning of tho forests of firs on tho Cascades and Coast range mountains. A party of hunters just down from tho Cascade mountains who had been up to Fish Lake and caught over fifteen hundred spec-Mod trout at two hauls report that thefiro originated, they think, in YineJMaple Bottom ; and that last Saturday it traveled faster than they could. Every thing was perfectly dry and burned liko tin der. They describo tho burning of the tall trees as being grand aud tcrriblo beyond description. The sound resembled Almt f the ocean when lashed into fury by oAtorm. On Sabbath morning tho trees commenced falling, producing a noise liko Jcavy can nonading in the distance. Tho party, or members thereof, were in imminent ganger several times, from the fire axid falling trees; but fortunately they all Jescaped without material injury bringiig with them not only tho fish they had caught, but the hams, and saddles, aud skins of fourteen deer they had killed. Oh 1 fur a good, old-fashioned rain a genuiuo Oregon rain I Shrewd Detectives. Somo time ago a package containing $50,000 was stolen frum a desk in the Canal Bank of New Orleans, in a roost mysterious manner. Oa a careful examination of the premises, the detective discovered the mark of a small nail upon the edge of a railing, on which tho thief must have placed his foot, aud that ho must have been a tall man. Thev concluded the nail was in the heel of the robber's IkmiI, and thai the wear of the leather had left the nail head projecting so that it would mark what ever be would step upon. The officers be came, thenceforth, anxiuus observers of all boot-heel', and after many days two of them happened into the City Hotel. Among the crowd a man was sitting, with one foot rais ed upon his knee, engaged in trying to bend or break off a projecting tack in tho heel of his boot. A glance showed that he was tall enough, and forthwith the officers arrested hira, charging him with the robbery. He confessed ; said he went to the bank to in quire the rate of exchange, saw the package lying upon the dek, and, when tho clerk turned his back for a moment, reached up, snatclied the money and left. He bad not ventured to uao any of it. and the whole was! recovered. We wish Ai'uany ImJ sharp as these ; we should then have strong hopes that the deeply-dyed villain who at tempted to burn up the ciy lu4 week might be brought to justice. He was tracked some distance in his stocking foot. The design cf the scoundrel evidently was tu burn out Mar shall &. Schlosser at all hazard. Trained 1 biases.
