4 From the Revolution. t)i4 Social Evil In New York. Tabular and statistical facts of the wo ' tncn of ill-fame in this city exhibit the following results : Can ueither read nor write, 16.05 per cent, j can read odIjt, 10.95 per ct.; read and wrke imperfectly; 27.30 per ctj read and write well, 37.79 per ct. It is greatly to be regretted that no ab solutely accurate statistics are at hand upon tha subject under consideration. Tney might easily bo obtained, but there seems to be no person sufficiently inter estcd in solving this social problem, im portant as it is on all sides conceded to be, to undertake the task of gathering and publishing such facts as might be had for the mere asking. In this regard our reformatory institutions do1 absolutely nothing, although somo of them havo the. amplest opportunities. From the best knowledge I have been able to gath er upon the subject, based both upon ob servation and inquiry, it is now probaulo that New York contains in round num .bcrs about 10,000 women- who, either publicly or privately make a marketable commodity of chastity. This number may be classified as follows : Inmates of brothels, 5,500, habitues of houses of as signation 2,500, mistresses, who also more or less frequently meet acquaintances at the latter establishments, 1,500, and, fin ally, the delicate, married and single who have one ort more intimate friends to whom they grant special passional favor from motives not altogether mercenary, 500. Total, 10,000. From certain data, the immediate causes of the adoption of this mode or habit of life may be stated, approximately, thus: Destitution, 2,625; idleness, 3,330; seduction, 1,555; love of liquor, 905 ; ill-treatment by parents or relatives, 920; bad company, 765. . '. Other causes were of course at work into which these general and prominent ones might have been subsided, but this bold statement, without explanation or detail, will serre our present purpose. .Now, if we suppose that each one of these T.0,000 women earn $10 per week through, her unholy trade, we have the enormous sum of 8100,000 per week, or $2,200,000 that i3 yearly spent in this city alone for the gratification of this demon of mascu line lust. Thus far the business seems to be one of demand and supply. But a business that earns annually $5,000,000 requires an investment of at least three times that suss, and that is perhaps a fair estimate of the value cf property, personal and real, that is required by this trade as at pres ent conducted. Still these figures do not yet present the amount of money actual ly expended yearly through this channel; for nothirg has been said of wines and liquors, and other luxuries which the business demands, nor any attempt made io estimate tne pecuniary cost ot me dis eases that have propagated and inter changed through this promiscuous inter course of the sexes. The estimate of the earnings of these women is exceed ingly low ; but here is another of a dif ferent kind, still lower and far more strik ing. - If, out of these 10,000 women, 100 are continually diseased a number far below the reality and these 100 women commit tvo acts of prostitution daily, thereby infecting only 50 per centum of those when they entertain, each sepa rate case of disease lasting only five day3, we reach the conclusion that 172, 000 persons are constantly infected by one or the other of these diseases. Al so how many wives and mothers are in daily danger through these 172,000 dis eased people.- An Adroit Nwordsman. t Pulaski, as is well known, was as adroit a swordsman as he was perfect in horsemanship, and he always rode a pow erful and fleet charger. During the retreat of the American ar my through New Jersey, in the darkest hour of our national adversity, Pulaski, was, with a small party of horsemen, pur sued by a large party of British cavalry, iha7 leader of which was a good horseman, .and mounted nearly as well as Pulaski. Pulaski rode in the rear of his detach ment and the British captain in the front of those he commanded. The morning wa3 shining brightly cast- f mg oblique shadows, and as the pursued party entered a long narrow lane, Pulas ki having satisfied himself of the superi or speed and command of his horse over that of his pursuer, slackened his pace and kept his horse to the side of the lane farthest from the sun. The pursuing of ficer eame up in hot haste, his sword ele vated so as to make . the . decisive cut Upon Pulaski as soon as he could reach him. r;PuIaski rode as though he- heard not the advance upon him yet he kept his eye fixed warily upon the ground on the. ide of his horse toward the sun on . the right. As soon as he saw the shadow of his pursuer's horse gain upon him, and that the horse's head,-by his shadow, had .gained about half, the length of his . own horse's.body, he gave the sudden sword cut of St. George with his powerful arm, and saw the decapitated head of the Eng lish officer following the stroke. His mathematical eye had measured rthe distance by the position of the shad ow so accurately his position giving a long back reach to his aftn, while the cross stroke of 'his pursuer must ' have 'been made at much shorter distance to have taken effect that the pursuing offi cer lost his', head before he suspected that Jib proximity was known, or that a blow -was meditated. The Best Grass foe Butter. If tou aim at a great flow of milk, feed clo ser; if you wish rich milk, and well fia- jTored butter, feed young timothy and -white clover j if you aim at the best re 'suits, both in Quantity and quality of but ?ter, feed on fresh pastures of white clover And timothy in summer, and early cut itimothy and. wheat bran in winter. The grass must be cut when beading out, or .better young "aftermath well cured. Avoid root? and garden- stuff in general, if you wish a good quality - of butter .though, it is now. held lhat . theseu fed i?hlie toilking'or immediately before, will remedy the, ejil. r - , latt iroabledvith lice can.be readily 'relieved from them by a free application of the water J a which potatoes have been boihd. O THOSE WHOSE SUFFERINGS HAVE been protracted from hidden canes, and whose cases require prompt treatment to render ex istence desirable. If you are suffering or have suffered from involuntary discharges, what effect does it produce upon your general health 7 Do yoa feel weak, debilitated, easily tired f Does a ttle extra exertion prodac palpitation of the heart? Does yonr liver, er urinary organs, or your kidneys, frequently get out of order t Is your urine sometimes thick, milky, or flocky, or s it ropy on settling? Or does a thick schm rtso to the top f Or iO sedlssent at the bottom after it has stood awhile f Do you have spells of short breathing or dyspepsia? Are your bowels consti pated ? Do you have spells of fainting or ruhes f blood to the head ? Il your memory impaired? s your mind constantly dwelling upon this sub ject? Do you feel dull, listless, moping, tired of company, of life ? Do you wind to be left alone, to get away from everybody? Does any little thing make you startor jump ? Is your sleep bro ken or restless ? Is the luntre of your eye as bril liant? The bloom on your cheek as bright? Do you enjoy yourself in society as well ? Do you pursue your business with the same energy T Do you feci as much confidence in yourclf? Are your spirits dull and flagging, given to fits of melap. choly ? If so, do not lay It to rout liver or dys peps la. Have you restless nights? Your back weak. your knees weak, and have but little appetite, and you attribute this to dyspepsia or II ver-com plaint? Now, reader, self-abuse, venereal diseases badly eured, and sexual excesses, are all capable of pro ducing a weakness of tke g operative organs. The organs of generation, when in perfect health, make the man. Did you ever think that those old, defiant, energetic, persevering, successful business-men are always those whose generative organs are in perfect health ? You sever hear such men complain of being melaocholy, of ner vousness, of palpitation of the heart. They a never afraid they cannot succeed in business; they don't become sad and diseooraged ; they are always polite and pleasant la the company of ladies, and look you and them right In tke face none of your downcast looks or any other mean ness about them. I do not mean those who keep the organs Inflamed by running to excess. These will not only ruin their oaatUuUon. but also those they do business with or for. How many men, from badly eured diseases. from the effects of self-abuse and excesses, hare brought about that state of weakness In those i gans that has reduced the general say stem so much as to produce almost every other disease idiocy, lunacy, paralysis, spinal affections, suicide. and almost every othef form of disease which hu cd as it j Is heir to, and the real cause cf the trouble scarcely ever suspected, and have doctored for all but the right one. Diseases of these organs require the use of a diuretic.
