The Unionist of the 26th nit., quotes find comments, at some length, on a portion of our last week's article on the steamer Al bany. Itsajs: The P. T. Company is a corporation, and thrre- fore to lit. Its officers and stockholders want to make money as we air do and therefore they chsrge very good prices for their freight and pas sengers. The boats are their own, and it u their privilege to exact whatever they please from their euhtomers. Anybody who don't want to patron ise them is at perfect liberty to go by any other liie. They always treat passengers in a gentle tainly manner, and they deliver freight carefully anl promptly. We have never heard the slightest complaint ot them in this regard. On the other hand, while the river is free to all bo its, the porta at Oregon city is not. Well, whose fault is this?. Is it not the fault of the Stat which, by its careless legislation has allow ed aa association of moneyed individuals to gob ble up a franchise to valuable at that portage? The editor of the Democrat, or any other editor, if he should get hold of money enough, would like no doubt, to invest it in just such a wayrf So would apr other individual, or company. But freights are too high 1 We admit it. We believe that they can be earned for one half the present rates, said yield large profit.' We tL' it is to be found in an honest, fair com petition, aud we hope to see sueh inaugurated. We dotM if any stockholder in the P. T. Company would complain if such a competition was estab lished, and if they did complain, what would they do about it? Transportation on the Willamette river, will be foruver governed, like all other transportation, by the laws of trade, and the excess of supply and de miod. If the P. T. boats don't carry as cheap as they ought, put ou boats that will carry cheap er. Hut wholesale denunciation of the company for tiling fair advantage of their business sagaci ty, money accumulations, and the very loose legis lation of the State, will never take a single cent of i .1 r.L- v x.- r .v- -1-: , , " las ounacn ou ion eacB ui tuo juij'jth. We don't blame the P. T. Co. fur Vlnv. ing to "mate monej nor do sre-Uame them for charging ' very good prices fur their freight and passengers'.' A they are a monopoly, as they have noT icfjlftition, it is quite natural that th$j should take advantage of that fact, and skin our citizens -j ast as they do. Ite are w ell aware that he who does notsvant, to patronize them is at perfect l;bir"r to travel by any other line ; - and, in drywcather, many merchant?, and others in Una and Polk connties act oa this principle. Teamsters will carry freight froia Portland up at lower figures, than are charged by the P. T. Company ; and they lose many, a ton of freight in this manner. VTe have never intimated that the P. T. Campany ever treated passengers otherwise than in a "gentlemanly manner." Our chief objection to them is that they are a mo nornlv. and take ad vantage, of this fact to enrich themselves bv skinning the dcodIc We here bear tesiixnonr that they have al m m a ways treated ns in a "gentlemanly manner." indeed they have had no just cause to act otherwise. We have never attacked them personally. Wc fight them only as monop ofists." - Bat the Unionist savs that though the Willamette river is free to all the boats, "the portage at Oregon City is not." Ah ! indeed. We have heard such talk before; bufwe do not believe a word of it. We hive heard also that the P. T. Company elain the exclusive right to the Falls, and the entire basin and river at Oregon City. The point in issue will be tested before the proper tribunals. It is not to be supposed, . a w w a a tor a moment, tuat tne uiiiamette river, or an portion of it, from the mouth to its source, is to be controlled by a few individu als. . . Ail navigable iriTers, are great high ways, free to all whoch"oe to navigate then, and if the legislature of Oregon has granted to the P T. Company the right to use the Willamette river at the Falls, and the por tage around them, to the utter exclusion of all others, we have no hesitancy in saying " that it will be pronounced illegal when prop erly tested. No legislature has a right to pass laws so totally and palpably adverse to J the r ubltc good ; and if our law-makers have done so foolish and unjust a thing, and if no judicial tribunal will annul them, the time will come when the people of Ore gon, impelled by the great law of self-preservation, will find ways and means to annul them themselves. It is not for a moment to be supposed that the immense public inter ests iavolved in such an issue will be sacri ficed in a contest of this character. Let the peopU of Oregon, irrespective -of parties, become thoroughly aroused to this subject, as they yet will, and we would not give a farthing for the valuable "franchise" which this sjssociation of "moneyed individuals" bare gobbled. up. Their supposed rights will not weigh a feather against the immense publlj interests involved. We are glad to see one journal in Oregon, besides the Democrat, contend that "freights are too high." The Unionist says "that they can be carried for one half their present rates, and yield a large profit." This is an honest and truthful admission, and we agree .that t"ie only way to remedy the evil is by a vigorous competition. We have been aiming at this all along. The proposed railroad, when built, (and by the way we are begin ning to think there is considerable humbug about the railroad) will compete with tho P. T. Company. It will bring freights jirwn very materially without doubt; and aothirg but some such movement ever will. Most certainly " wholesale denunciation" never will ; and we have never supposed, it j would ever take a "single cent of the bur thens off the backs of the shipper." When men can fleece a State without let or hind rance, they usually snap their fingers at de nunciation of all kinds. . Ch avge. Mr, Settlemier. lone onn- neetid with t! e firm of Settlemier & Co. of this place, has witbdaawn, and intends soon leaving for the Atlantic States. Ho will carry ivith him the best wishes for his suc cess of the community. ; . Dr. R. CL Hill now owns the entire estab lishment, and will continue the business at tbe old stand. . . . ' . A Runaway. -Last Thursday evening a team belonging to & Mr. Davis, a man jus moving into town, took fright, and starting from near the Soap Factory, ran towards the river until they came to First street ; when they turned and ran up that street til they came to Ferry street; when they agnin turned and ran to Second street; and being undoubtedly quite dry by this time, they a gain made a short turn in front of "Gird's Bank Exchange," and running into a wag on loaded with a big saw-log, they conclu ded to halt and lay up for repairs. They stove up the wagon and themselves consid erably, and materially injured tho owner by running over him. It is wonderful that they did not do uioro damage, when the route over which they ran is taken into con sidctation. Sewer. A good sewer is being con structed in Albany, under tho superintend ancc of Councilman Carter, commencing on tho north side of Third street, and running down, on the west side of terry street, to tbo river. Tho cut between second and third streets is quito deep. The sewer twenty inches square, of red fir plank two inches thick. Whcn fiuiehed it will carry off considerable filth which accumulates at and near its source at certain seasons of the year. Pitches cues Ix. The last Albany democrat pit to the P. T. Company rather hefty' i Holl es in and earnestly wishes for the success of the railroad which is to connect Portland and Kugene city, so that " it will break up " the M monopoly." If the Democrat had identified tho road it refers to the idea would have been far more comprehensible If the Democrat bad said the East-tide road, it would undoubtedly be correct in regard to the ef fect. It would go still further ; it would have a tendency to lemn the utility of the heretofore and now convenient Willamette river. It U dif flcult to comprehend the propriety of attempting to construct two roads, one of which comes dl rectly in competition with transportation on the river, while, if we can build tho other, it opens up a great agricultural country to trade, commerce and the world. Portland Commercial. We had reference to the east-side railroad ; but we think that a railroad, on the west cide would also affect the P. T. Co. to the extent of breaking' up the monopoly they now enjoy. Why not? As to tho "two roads' spoken of we have serious doubts whether one of the " two roads will be built very soon: we mean the east-side. We begin bugged. to believe we have been hum- Kixgfisher. A kingfisher is generally to be looked for in secluded glens, perched on some dry limb over a trout stream, gating into toe shad v waters for unwary minnows. Thus the poets and painters have him ; but yesterday we saw one un der a city wharf, engaged in the plcbcUc occupa tion of diving for suckers. This particular bird has probably found out that there is an ordiuance against the ose of shotguns within the corporate iiniiu. i'ortland Jlerala. Very likely. The kingfisher is a very kt.owing bird. If you want a full, accurate and scientific description of him, consult vuauuon s orniinoiogicai worn, lie is a braver bird than is generally supposed. We AS 9 sr wounded one a few evenings since, and be showed considerable fight when an attempt was made to capture him. ALBANY PRICES CCIUIEXT. CORRECTED WEEKLY ISY J. CBADUOIIL.
