A, . J ) j K3 J f V 7 ) i I emoctat. 8ATURDAY JULY 25. 18S. .. . Tat 'i Albany." This is the nomoofa - tiew boat recently built by the P. T. Com pany, She made her appearance here lat Tuesday morning, and after a short stay, utarted up for Corvallis, having on board a oodly quantity of people from Albany, be cause it was a 44 frce rido but after coin" up a few mile she became scared at a few una9, bo we are told, and turned round and came back, without hating even smelt Cor vallis. The P. T. Company can well afford to build a little band-box boat and name it in honor of our city j for AUany and Linn county pour more money into their plethoric coffers than any other three counties in the State. Linn county alone contributes to the P. T. Co. sufficient to build a doxen such boat erery year. One reason why we are anxious that the proposed railroad between Portland and Eugene shall bo a success is that it will Ireak up this monopoly. Let the railroad I completed, and in successful operation, and freights of all kinds will come down, and our farmers will then have some sort of show for competing with California farmers. At present the freights are so ruinously high that it takes a large portion of our pro dace to pay for shipping the balance to mar ket. Our business men our farmers should neTcr forget that while the P. T. Company build lxat& and christen them af ter some favorite town or locality, they nro skinning them as completely as ever a peo ple were skinned by a soulless monopoly. These new boats only afford now facilities to the P. T. Company for skinning Linn county more successfully. "Whining. All the leathern of the public schools of Portland were dismissed nt the nd of the last rchool term ; and the lludi cal papers are whining terribly a tout it. They say politics were at the bottom of it. We do not know what the cause ia, nor what reason the School OScers a..in ; nor is it material. We do know, however, that ever since the Radicals have had control in Portland, they were very careful, as a gen eral fact, to employ none except the "trttoly loll." Every Democrat was proscribed, no mutter how well qualified in other re pct. And this is true of almost every locality in the United States where the Radical were in the ascendancy. And not nly so, but many of the teachers thus employed, r ilarly taught Radical dogma to the fchxlar, one half of whom were the children of Dem- ocratic parents. We know of many instan--ces where Democrats, averting their man hood, refused to tamely submit to kuc!i out ra;es, and took their children from school, anl hired teachers who confined themselves to their legitimate duties. It comes with a very bad grace from those .who, for six or eight long years have thus -.proscribed and persecuted Democrats, now to set up a howl because the Democratic city -of Portland has dismissed the Radical tench--ers aforesaid. Their previous acts should -operate as a completo estoppel. We havo no fears, however, that Demo crats will imitate their Radical predecessors .in this senseless, wholesale proscription. "Th3 Democratic party always has been an ; advocate of toleration. The Deniicratic , party never yet imprisoned any one ; never jjet menaced anylmdyV liberty, or property or life, because of a mere difference of polit ".ical or religious belief; and they do not pro -jo3e to imitate the Radicals in such things "They leave such meanness and villainy to theai. Albaxt Sch ools. The first term of the Albany public cb.ol commericcd !at 31 on - day. under 3Ir. John 31 Farland. We learn that he has taught several years in pucce? . sion. in one place ; which is of itself n (tikx recommendation. We hope he trill fill the Vill. Let those who send to the public school lend him all the assistance in the r rpower in the matter of government, punc taal attendance, tc. There is no more la- .borioas occupation than that of teacher, a -we know by experience ; hence every good 4iacher should be backed up and encouraged, .in every suitable vray, by his patrons. . The Alb'any College closed its last term 3Iast Thursday. The following students were mot absent without excuse, during the e -sion, and their names are therefore entitled to appear on the Roll of Honor : G. F. Beach, R. II. 3Ltrkhatn, Isaac .Long, O. Z.
