At six o'clock on last Saturday morning, Hit steamer "Echo' left the Albany wharf bearing upon its decks a goodly number of lidies and gentlemen, as also tho Albany Brass Band, bound for the Democratic Rati fioatioa stnd Jollification meeting which was Announced to come off at Salem on that day. bo taorning was propitious Old Sol had tken bright and clear, the air was cool and fragrant, and the boat made as good timo as was possible at the present low stage of wa - ter. At every landing the crowd was visibly augmented, particularly at Independence ; arid when we arrived at the Salem landing the boat bad about as many passengers as she could conveniently accommodate, On the arrival of the boat our part? were met detachment of marshals, the Aurora Brass Band and the artillery, and we were firmed in procession and escorted to the com- men in fmnt f th fVnirfc House, where -we joined the main procession and marched through the principal streets to Marion Square the place which had been previous- y prepared for the exercises of the day. This square is composed of the most beaqti - i e i im na inYiung grove ui juung cv-uam vcr beheld, and under cover or their thick- est foliage was erected the speakers' stand, decked with evergreens and bouquets of rare sind fragrant roses. Seats had been prepar ed in the grounds for thousands of people, yet lone ere the last of the procession had filel in all the sitting room had been secured, thus compelling at least one-third of the piultitude to 6tand up. Tho gentlemanly committee on arrangements had evidently prepare iur cy cruu ; uui mcjr uiu not Anticipate such a ponderous outpouring of the ''Cnterrified a vas witnessed that day. " After Uie swaying mass had been as com fortably and conveniently arranged as it was pos sible for Chief Marshal Bell and his aids to devise, tho president of the day, Hon, L. F. Grover, in a few appropriate and pithy rem-ims announceu we purpJs8 aqa oojess of the gathering, and introduced, as the Brut cpenker of tho occasion, Ex-Senator Xes- mitli, who, proceeded to address the meeting in his most happy style dealing trenchant blows on th head of the Radicals without , siini or eaercy. J udge Hayden followed in his usurd caustic manner, combining eloquence aid logic with wit and sarcasm, and the pres- nt State officials, if none else, wereeertainlv I glad when ne "let up, lor tne mirror in rhich he held their official acts up to the au- m m a t . . dicnie made a mighty ul v showing for them. The J udge was followed by Hon. Geo. "By, LTelm, and no Democrat from Linn who v as present could fail to feel gratified at the welcoming shout that went up from the lips and hearts of that rat multitude at the an nouncement of the name of the "young lion ct Linn ;" and that he on that occasion fully maintained his former enviable reputation a an orator every one who heard him will testify. At the conclusion of Mr. Ilelm'i address dinner was announced, and the as aemtlage repaired to the tables near by and partook of a bountiful repast of substantial and well-served victuals. And here, perhaps, it'wotjld not be amiss to give the reader some facts by which he can form some idea of the yastnsssof the gathering. The table was arranged so as to accommodate 3,000 people, making tne calculation that two persons would occupy every three feet of standing room along its side ; and beside all this room being occupied, the people were arranged from three to five deep in the rear, and those at the table would pass the provisions back o those who could not get to the table to fcelp themselves. Besides this, there were a greet number of persons who went qp to be betels and private residences to dine- ancf course, among these latter were all those two or three thousand Republicans wora the Salem papers mention as being present to "swell the happy throng." Tiiey a rely 4ida't remain to dine with "Copper, heads" and ''traitors !" The following is the amount of provisions prepared by the committee, all of which was devoured ex;- ceptin the bread ; 4,100 lb, bread, 3,100 lbs. beef, 1,500 Its, pork, 27 sheep, 2 bears, 60 dozxi chickens and 1,000 pies. It is per baps safe to say that there were five thousand people fed at those tables a larger croyd than ever Salem, witnessed before. After dinner the assemblage was address ed by lion. J, S, Smith, Col. Shieland Hon, John Burnett, each of whom acquitted them selves with marked ability and aptitude. Each speaker during the day was greeted with tt unders of applause that made the Pu ritanicut hills of Salem fairly groan in an guish of spirit, while they caused the faces of her gallant band of Democrats, who have been so fearfully in the minority for years past, to beam in rapturous smiles of joy and delight. At the conclusion of the exercises on the groun&ti, a body of "Ilomibusques," sup posed ai first to be a detachment of the bloody Ku-Klc x Klan, paraded the principal streets and male fun for the people. At night came the torch-light procession; iljumin itioas, fire-works, etc., followed by eloquent and stirring speeches from Messrs. Curl, Helm, Gaiaway, Bonham and Shiel, amid the most enthusiastis cheers for the national Democratic nomines, During the progress of the evening's .exercises some abortive attempts were made by the opposi- tion to disturb them, but tey were prompt ly 'nipied in the bud" by the oyerpowering boats of Democracy, We were proud to see the manicioth flag which belongs to tho Dem ocrats of" Albany, suspended across Commer cial streit, and each star of which was deck ei with bouquet .of rosesihe work of the fair Democratic ladies of Salem. May their patriotic) labors in behalf ot Democracy, th Constitution and the Union, bo crowned with as brilliant a success as was tho meeting to which they gave their aid and countenance on tho 11th instant. Too much credit can not bo accorded to the officers of tho day and the various com mittces fur tho prompt and efficient manner in which they performed their several duties and responsibilities, and to whom the success of the occasion may be mainly attributed. The writer hereof begs lcavo to extend his thanks to Chief Marshal John C. Bell fur courtesies extended and favors shown him du ring the day ; as also to Mr. II. and lady fur the kind and hospitable entertainment given to him and his "better half" during their sojourn at the capital.
