Preaching on the-2nd -and 4th Sun- da j of each month, ia the Albany District School . House. jTn Mocxtaii Road. -We have just passed over the road running from Albany 'over the Cascade mountains ; and a some are anxions to know its condition at present we wilt say that, a & general fact, it is one !of the best mountain roach of which we 'Jbav a any kaoiflcctge. But, owing to the fict that unusually large quantities of rain havJ recently fallen, and also that several i .... AMwam nf ittl have been driven over. Iroad oa the mountain is considerably cut )a sundry places. Some of the fords, too, 1 quite rocky ; that is, large rocks have J m - .1 r 1 - l. It.. cfwMBTTfntm tne oaniiam luaaiuc iuo . i r i" t I. - fords ipery rough, and when the water is hih. tittle dangerous. Mr. Warner, of had one of the wheels of a liht wagon pretty effectually smashed up in . ........ crossing 'roctv ford," but being an origi Dal nius, he manufactured another with n n -pnt on his wav reiieinjr. At present the road is much traveled. We met several band- of men bound for Ochcco amoaz them was Mr. Pickett, ex-editnr of the Albany Journal. He had just crossed a fordand was reloading the wagon, sweat-. ;nfirwl tuTTlnc and anathematizing. He fi oa o had been compelled to get out in the middle of the stream, in his bare feet, on the sharp .ston ja, in the ice-cold water ; and he was "nnt In tha best humor imaginable. Never theless, he furnished us with late papers, and inquired all about the road ahead, and rhen we inquired of him if he bad seen anything of a powder-Cask lying on the road, which we had lost, he replied that he had not ' seen a flask of powder nor no oth er kind out there he wished he could !" The Company intend working the road, and putting it in good order S3 soon as possible. But with careful and judicious driving it is even now safe and passable. Those who visit the Cascade mountains must not expect to se j roads over them like that letween Al bany and Lebanon. They should expect to meet with rocks, and large roots of tremen daously large trees running across the road in some places ; and to piss along where on one side of the road is a high perpendicular cliff, and on the other a deep canyon or abyss yawning below them. We would not give a farthing for a road over a mountain that dees not have some difStult and ugly placei in it. Retcrxed. We returned late last Wednes day eieaingfrom a trip to the Cascade moun tains; having been absent just ten day, with our health very materially improved. Tour-fifths of the time we were out it rained : yet the entire party, consisting of ourself and A. Hackleman and our wives were much . benefitted by the trip. We are too late this week, and we find the paper too much advanced to permit us to say to-day what we intend saying relative to the excur sion. We have abundant material for a long article ; but inasmuch as much of it is of a personal character, we have doubts as to the propriety of going very largely into detail. If we could only be assured that the reader would enjoy it as much as we did we would fill a page or more of the Demo crat. ' -A Yocxc " Manhood " Recoxstbccted. 5Ir. J. E. Bentley, of this city, wliile coming home from camp-meeting last Sun day, was saluted with some rather insulting and impertinent remarks from a well-known little nigger boy of Albany named "George" whereupon Mr. B. "went for him" with a whip and " larrupped " him beautifully, inflicting some severe lacerations of the al ready . well-fanned skin. Friend Bentley went before His Honor, Recorder Doolittle, on Monday morning, and " pungled " fire dollars for the luxury. He is one of our strongest Radicals, and is in favor of Negro Suffrage and Negro Equality in the SoutJt; and to has no objection to a little nigger suffering io Albany either. rTfli Fourth. There being no regular eelebntioa in this city on the Fourth, our citizens are preparing to leave town and rusticate for that day, or attend celebrations jn oth r localities. Quite a large party will go to Culrer's grove, five miles south of town, and pi ss the day Jn rural sports ; others will attend the celebratiou at fncjf nendence, while quite a number of the ''little 'uns yflM probably go to the Sabbath School Pic nic t jSprqnjjer's Grove, on the Calipooya ea mites from town, s Pra wxAL. His friends are con fident of his success. The ladies of Albany now wear " moon-Vight-on-the-lake" for dresses, and their husbatida 11 hard-times" for pantaloons. A natural consequence.
