In the cori" fstnictloa of railroads it is Tery important 'rthat the j bo as straight as possible. This is -a w If evident proposition and needs no long argament for its elucidation. ... In Great Brit ain it is considered so important to hate rail- roals straight that they hare constructed . jieTcnty miles of tunnel in the aggregate "unuca of which is through solid rock. One -tun:ael is three miles and sixty feet in length. The Kilsby tunnel on the London and north ires tern railway is ono mile and 1,914 feet - Bonn, 20 feck v'16 20 fect hiSb 1C0 feck be : low the surface, and is aired and partially lighted by two shafts, of sixty feet diameter. The total cost is 320,000, or more than ono million three hundred thousand dollars. , These facts show how much importance the railroad men of England attach to the con struction of $traljt railroads. Time is gained, curves are avoided, and thus rapid transit is secured. TTe have seen the contract between A. J. Coo'i & Co. and the Oregon Central Railroad Company. It provides that the road shall run. from East Portland to Oregon City; . thee co to Salem ; thence to Albany ; but it does not stipulate that it shall run to Corral lis. The Railroad map has the proposed Railroad running from Albany to Eugene - almost on an air-line leaving Corral is Rrar off to the right, and running a "branch" . road from Albany to Corvallis. Taking the map far a guide, there would seem to bo no doult as to the construction placed upon the contract by the contracting parties ; and that ii, that the Road will run from Albany, in almost an air-line, through Linn county to Jiugene City, crossing the Willamette somewhere in the vicinity of Harrisburg. It thus runs directly through the heart of one of tbe finest agricultural districts in the . r. 9 f a umtevl otates, ana crosses icwer ctrvauis than an v other route th.it can be selected. or We believe this route the best for all par- tta MMiMmM It ! rrn lwttir fur Ctirral- lis than if the road ran. directly through it , been as e if a "branch" road runs from Al bany to Corvallis it has about all the advan-j tagei of transhipment, ic., which it would have if the road ran directly through it, be sides the certainty that ultimately it will be extended to Yaquina Bay thus giving it a monopoly of the trade which will eventually spring op from that region. We shall recur to this subject again. FPTXIXG Or THE iSEW fACIEIC HOTEL. This magnificent edifice is now complete 1, and will be formally opened on next Mon day, on which occasion the proprietor, Mr. J. B. Li tx Cocxtt Fair, 1868. We desire to call the attention of our readers to the ad rertbtement headed as above, among the new "ads" in to-day's paper. We learn that the Board of Directors are taking eztraordi nary measures to make the Fair unusually attractive this season, and we hope they wil meet with that flattering success and gener ous support from the public which such an institution so eminently merits. . Though the notice was very short, yet there was a respectable attendance. We are too crowded to go into detail We can only say that his speech was sound, argumentative and well-timed and gave entire satisfaction. After he had concluded, C. O. Curl, being called on, also spoke at some length in a very lucid and effective manner. He is the opponent of Judgo Powell, and if he don't beat the Judge, he will scare him half to death, and will run so close that the Judge will have the heaves and thumps for the next six months.
