men and women notoriously experience
in their relations with each other. It
may be useful to stato the principal
causes of this unhappincss, and to give
some definite directions in tho way of
remedy. Absenco of love, absenco of
reason, absenco of justice, absenco of
1 taste in other words, harshness and
neglect, stillness and frivolity, vice and
crime, vulgarity and slovenliness. are the
leading and inevitable creators of aliena
tion, dislike and misery in marriage.
"Whatever tends to increase theso tends
to multiply separations and divorces be
tween those who cannot endure each
other ; and to multiply irritations, quar
rels, sorrows and agonies between those
who may endure, but cannot enjoy each
ether. In marriage the intimacy is so
great and constant that tho slightest
friction easily becomes galling. Nowhere
beside is there such need of magnanimous
forbearance in one, or elso of equality of
worth and refinement in both. "Love
Joes not secure happiness in marriage,
often the contrary; reason is necessary."
.So said tho wise Jean Paul. He also
id: "The best man joined with the
worst woman has a greater hell than the
Tjest woman joined with the worst man."
This is, no doubt, truo as a general rule,
because woman is so much more capable
than man of self-abnegation, silent pa
tience, meek submission and flexible ad
justment to inevitable circumstances.
Probably the women who keenly and
chronically suffer from unhappy mar
riages arc far more numerous than the
kindred sufferers of the other sex. This
is because thy are more deeply suscepti
ble to cruelty and indifference and to all
the repulsive traits of character; are less
capable of ignoring such things ; have
Jess of absorbing occupation of their own
to take up their attention, and are less
aoic to De aDsorDea in tnmgs Dcyona trie
personal and domestic - sphere. There
are unquestionably thousands of married
-women whose experience i3 made a Iiv-
ing martyrdom Dy me lnnuenty, me ty
fanny , the coarseness, the general odious-
, cess and wearisomeness of their bus
bands. In most cases, even where a di
vorce is wished, the shocking public
scandal and disgrace is too much ; and
they wear on to the end. What misery
3elicat3 and conscientious women, of ded
icated souls and polished manners, who
love everything that is pure and beauti
ful, are compelled to undergo in their
bondage to husbands, ignorant, uninter-
sting, ignoble, relentlessly domineering,
is not to be expressed. Their best weap
ons, in such cases, if they knew it, are
gentleness, patience, persuasion, and the
.skillful use of every means to improve
and up'ift their unequal companions to
their tirn level. The .Persian poet ex
' pressed a rich truth when he wrote,
-"Gentleness is the salt on the table of
morals." It is a tragedy that the good
wife of a bad husband is to identified
with him that the penalties of his offences
fall on her head, often more terribly than
on his. A pure woman loving a wicked
man most expect to have her affections
ravaged by his sins; docs not the light
ning drawn by the rod blast the innocent
. ivy entwining it 1 What lacerating woes
the gambler, the drunkard, the forger,
the adulterer, inflicts on his wife !
And yet, profound as is the misfor
-tune, sharp as is the suffering of such, it
may be doubted whether a noble, sensi
tive, cultivated man, with a yearning
heart of softness and peace, a capacious
zaind full of grand aspirations, married,
by some fatal chance, to a woman with
a petty soul, a teasing and tyranni-
i
cai temper, a mencanous ana rasping
tongue, whose taste is for small gossip
and scandal, whose ambition is for fast:
ionable show and noise, whose life is one
incessant fret and sting it may be
doubted if this man's lot is not severer
with his ill-matched consort than hers
would bo with the worst husband in the
world. He had better marry a vinegar
. a w r-w
cruet man sucn a lartar. v hen weary
and seeking to rest, to be roused up by a
scolding ; when searching for truth, or
. i i . .
contemplating Deauty, or communing
with God, or aspiring to perfection, or
..scheming some vast good for mankind, to
.be aggravated by abuse, insulted by false
; .charges, dragged down to petty interests
which to despises, and mixed up with
wrongs and passions which he loathes
.these degrading injuries, these wasteful
vexations,-and what he must endow. No
bonder if he vehemently resents a treat
ment eo incongruous with his worth. No
-wonder if, vexed, hurt, goaded half to
ciadnesg, he gets enraged, and unseemly
contentions ensue, followed by pamtul de
.ipressions and remorseful grief. No won.
der if be findgit hard indeed to forget or
to forgive the infliction of an evil so in
comparably profound and frightful. There
is, to a h:gh-souled man, no wrong merely
. nurtiui or more dimcalt to nardon than
to have iaean motives falsely ascribed to
mm, to ce placed by misinterpretation on
.a lower plane than that where he belongs.
"Every such experience stabs the moral
source of life, and draws blood from the
oul itself. Husband and wife power
fully tend to a common level and likeness
"The high ar must redeem and lift tho un
equal mate, or live in strife and misery
At the lower tafce3 pattern alter the su
ferior n3, the petty, frivolous, false, and
.. iretiul becormug magnanimous, dedica
ied, and serene, it is a divine triumph o
graee, and the result will be full of bless
edness. But otherwise a wearing unhap
pmess is inevitable, however carefully 1
be hidden, however bravely it be borne

ADDRESS
TO TH
NERVOUS AND DEBILITATED!
10 THOSE WHOSE SUFFERINGS HAVE
. been protracted from bidden causes, and
whose eases require prompt treatment to ttnder ex
istence desirable. If you are suffering or have
suffered from lavolunlary discharge, what effect
due It produoo upon your general health J Do
you fl wsak, debilitated, easily tired t Does a
little extra exertion prodac palpitation of the
heart? Does your liver, or urinary organs, or
your kidneys, frequently get out of ordeif Is
your urine sometimes thick, milky, ov flooky, or
is It ropy oa settling f Or does a thick seum rise
to the top t Or Is a sediment at tbe bottom after
it has stood awhile f Do you have spells of short
breathing or dyspepsia? Are your bowels consti
pated f Do yoa have spells of fainting or rushes
of Moot to tie seat f It your memory Unpaired?
Is your mind constantly dwelling upon this sub
ject? Do you feel dull, listless, moping, tired of
company, of life ? Do you wish to be left alone,
to get away from everybody? Does any little
thing make you start or Jump? Is your sleep bro
ken or restless ? Is tbe lustre of your eye as bril
liant? The bloom on your cheek as bright? Do
you enjoy yourself In society as well ? Do you
pursue your business with the same energy ? Do
you feel as much confidence in yourself? Are your
spirits dull and flagging, given to fits of melan
choly ? If to, do not lay it to your liver or dys
pepsla.
Have you restless sights? Your back weak,
your knees weak, and bare but little appetite, and
you attribute this to dyspepsia or liver-complaint?
Now, reader, eclf-abuse, venereal diseases badly
cured, and sexual excesses, are all capable of pro
ducing a weakness of tbe generative organs. Tho
organs of generation, when ia perfect health,
make the man. Did you ever think that those
bold, defiant, energetic, pemveriog. successful
btulnets-tncn are always those whoso generative
organs are in perfect health ? You never hear
such men complain of being melancholy, of ner
vousness, of palpitation of tbe heart. Tbey are
never afraid tbey cannot succeed in business;
tbey don't become sad and discouraged; they
are always polite and pleasant In the company of
ladies, and look you and them right in the face
none of your downrat looks or any other mean
ness about tbctn. I da not mean those who keep
tho organs inflamed by running to exceas. Tbe
will not only ruin their constitutions, bat also
tboce they do business with or for.
How many men, from badly cored diseases,
from the effects of self-abuse and ex coses, save
brought about that state of weakness In those or
gans that has reduce! tbe genera! say stem so
much as to produce almost every other dUease
idiocy, lunacy, paralysis, spinal affections, suicide,
and almost every other form of disease which hu
manity is bcir to, and the real cause of the trouble
scarcely ever suspected, and have doctored for all
but tbe right one.
Diseases of these organs require the use of a

, This is a remedy so universally known to surpass

that it is useless bore to publish tbe evidence of ita
