POET1U.
. For the State Rights Democrat
AD WILLAMETTAM.
From the Cascades frozen gorges, ,
Leaping like a child at play,
Winding, widening through the valley.
Bright Willamette glides away.
Onward ever
Lovely river,
Softly calling to the sea ;
Time that scars us,
Maims and mars us,
Leaves no track or trench on thee.
Spring's green witchery is weaving
Braid and border for tby side ;
Grace forever haunts thy journey,
Beauty dimples on thy tide.
, Through the purple gates of morning
Now thy roseate ripples dance ;
Golden, then, when Day departing,
On thy waters trails his lanee.
. Waltiing, flashing,
; Tinkling, plashing,
Limpid, volatile and free
Always hurried . '
To be buried
In the bitter moon-mad sea. '.
In thy crystal deeps, inverted
.Swings a picture of the sky ;
'Like those wavering hopes of AMea
J)imly in our dreams that lie:
Clouded often, drowned in turmoil,
Taint and lovely far away,
'Wreathing sunshine on the morrow,
JJreathing fragrance 'round to-day.
"Love would wander
Ilere and ponder
Hither Poetry would dream ;
Life's old questions,
Sad suggestions, f
"Whence and wbhher?" throng thy
stream.
n the roaring wastes of ocean
Soon thy scattered waves shall toss ;
Mlid the surge's rythmic thunder
Shall thy silver tongues be lost.
Ch ! thy glimmering rush of gladness ,
Mocks this turbid life of mine,
F-acing to the wild Forever
Down the sloping paths of time ! ,
Onward ever,
, Lovely river,
Softly calling to the sea;
Time that scars us,
Maims and mars us,
:" ' Leaves no traek or trench on thee.

Aidant College. The ecmd term of
this Institution closed last Thursday. On
"Wednesday evening the Chapel was crowded
by those who bad come to witness the exer
cises. The declamations as well as the
reading of a paper by a young lady were
highly appreciated by the large audience.
On Thursday a public examination took
place ; and the promptitude of the scholars
in answering questions submitted to them 1y
lot proved that their training had been of
the most thorough kind, and not of the su
perficial character which obtains in too many
of our institutions of learning.
" The names of the following students are
entitlid to appear on the Roll of Honor on
account of not being absent, during the
term, without excuse:

To the Ladies. Josh Billings says : "A
man tiay, perhaps, escape death, heaven,
or the pains of Pluto's furnaces, but he can't
escape gittin' his wife a new bunnet ef she
wants it." And what man ever had a wife
that didn't want a new bonnet ? Well, Mrs.
Dunniway ha3 'em, from the size of a wafer
clear clown to a shirt-button with a rabbit
hair run through it for strings. Her dress
trimmings and ladies' furnishing goods are
also rtcTierche that is, "just the cheese."
Ladies will certainly enjoy a call at Mrs.
Dunni way's Millinerytore.
Cox victed. We learn that the man Gould,
who was a few weeks ago arrested in this
city, charged with having surreptitiously,
burglariously and feloniously gobbled onto
some vratches and other jewelry, at Corvallis,
has been tried and found guilty of the of
fence charged in Ihe indictment. The evi
dence against the prisoner was wholly cir
cumstantjal, but so strong as to leave no
doubt on the minds of the jury as to his
.guilt. , He was tried at Corvallis, before his
Honor Judge Skinner.
