After sundry preliminary re marks, he stated that he would prove, be yond the possibility of succeful contradic tion, that the Radical party is now, and from the very beginning of the Government had been a Disunion party ; and, on the oth er hand, he defied any one to show that the Democratic party had ever been guilty of a Disunion actor of uttering a solitary Dis union sentiment. lie rju'ited from the ut terance cf Representative ra&n, from Ham ilton djwn to iiinzoln j he quoted the acts of northern legislatures, Conventions, Ac., showing that the opponents of the DemoT 'ocratic party had been in fardr of Disunion, 'at yarfops crises in the history of our Gov ernment, from its very foundation down to the present hour. At the closo of hi re .marks he ipokp on the bond question, show ing that it is rank injustice to make the njasscs bear the burdens which properly be long to the rich bondholder. Mr. S. is an -o Tec tire, logical and interesting speaker, and we trust this may not Le his last effort dur- ving the pending campaign, sjcrxed. -Our friend, Cowan of the rm of Xorcross Cowan has returned in gafety from the metropolis of the Pacific coast, bringing with him a mammoth supply of first-class goods of all kinds. He found . goods in 3an Francisco ranging at very low figures, and hence he is enabled to sell the topk: which he brought up at perhaps lower prices than goods have been sold in this market since the close of the war. We ad vise married men, with short purses, to keep their wives away from Xorcross', as the at tractive display of goods is almost irresisti ble. These gentlemen have a splendid stock of hardware, which is claimed to be superior, both in quantity and quality, to any assort ment this side of Portland. New Goods. The last ocean steamer "brought a long list of passengers from the Bay City, among whom were Mrs. Paxton and Mrs. Cheadle of this city. Mrs. Pax ton brought with her, to Portland, a choice , lot of millinery goods of the very latest styles, some of which have already reached Albany. We are quite sure our lady friends will be delighted with her assortment. Mrs. Cheadle, while in San Francisco, laid in a large assortment of goods suitable for this market the stock costing, so ve are informed, ten thousand dollars. A part of the goods have reached here already, and tho remainder will be on hand in a few days. - : Destistrt. Attention is directed to Dr. Gray's advertisement. We have no hesitan cy in saying that we consider him a first-class dentist, and as such we commend him to the public. He will, in a few days, profession: ally visit Peoria, Harrisburg and Eugene. City, stopping a short time' in each place, when those desiring artificial teeth, or first class dental operations performed, can be ac, commodated. Mc re New Goods. Mr. A. Cohn, (in the fire-proof brick formerly occupied by Messrs. Beach & Monteith,) has just received and opened a large and excellent stock of drv- .goods, clothing, boots and shoes, etc., Ac. -which, he tells us, he is prepared to sell at -the very lowest prices. His goods are all new and of the very best quality. Mr. Cohn is con: pantively a new comer amongst us w tuucui; uusmess uauiu , anu bucq per sons should be encouraged to remain in our midst We hope he will -receive a liberal share sf -the public patronage. Corvallis. Wo made a flying visit to this place last Saturday. When wo arrived thero the Democracy vrcro holding their County Convention. A good ticket was nominated, and we nro assured it will be triumphantly elected. Our friend, Belling, ger, who once run the Arena, was nomina ted for tho Legislature. If elected ho will make a good member. Corvallis is a neat, quiet place, beautiful ly situated on the west bank of tho Willam ette. Tho surrounding scenery is quite ro mantic, and the lands between it and the hills off towards the ocean, aro among tho best and most fertile in tho Willamette Valley. Wo called on the editor of tho Go zettc, and found him just getting ready "eyes in a fine phrensy rolling" to iudite a long article on the evils of "tangle-foot," 'hell-broth," Ac. Ac, Tho next Gazelle will doubtless bo moro interesting than usu al ; that is, if its editor doesn't have his "pipe put out," by the unlucky pill-garlic whoso horse recently fell to " bucking " no furiously in the streets of Corvallis, That Bridge. Dixey creek, on First street, is now spanned by a largo, substantial, solid and durable bridge. This is an admi rable convenience, and ono for which our City Fathers, together with tho contractors, should have due thanks. At this rato Dixey will soon be "reconstructed", without the aid of the Rump, District School. At the regular School meeting of District Xo. 3, of this county, held last Monday, Allen Parker was elected Director for three years, and L. S. Rodgers for one year ; and A. X. Arnold was elected clerk; all Democrats. Baptized. The Baptist church of this place last Saturday received ten new mem bers three males and seven females by im mersion in the Willamette river near Beach & Montcith's warehouse.
