Tat Clcb. Although extra exertions were
ipat forth, last Saturday, hj the Radicals of
Albany, to bar a large number of Demo
crats attend their Club meeting, and hear the
terrible "Thunderer" speak his piece of fus
rti&n and bombast, yet the Democratic meet
ang was better and more largely attended
than any other that has yet been held since
the organization of the club ; there being
Tbetween two and three hundred gentlemen,
And forty or fifty ladies present. The meet
ing was addressed by Hon. Q. R. Ilejra of
Linn, and lion. Isaac Cox, of Josephine
county, who was here canvassing for a book
entitled the "History of Oregon," which he
proposes soon publishing. We are told that
the speech of the former gentleman was the
ablest he erer delirered--and that is saying
a great deal ; and that the speech of the lat
ter, though not over a half hour long, was
Tery pointed and abounded in flights of gen
Mine eloquence. Twenty-five additional "re
cruits from Price's army," enrolled their
names, and became members of the Club.
Come on, brethren, you that have not yet
signed, and enroll your names, also. "Price's
army," in Linn county, will prove a quite
formidable one ere the campaign shall have
closed.
Thk Wkather. We write this Thursday
noon. The weather is still cold end pinch
ing. Some declare they are delighted with
it. We "can't sec it." We have suffered
more during this cold snap than we did some
years ago in Minnesota, where the winters
last four and five months, and the thermom
eter is frequently at thirty, and sometimes
at forty degrees below zero.
This cold weather is hard on farmers
hard on their stock hard on everything.
Hay is $20 per ton, and not very plenty.
We are amazed at the number of sleighs
that have sprung into being within the. last
two weeks. Sleighs of every imaginable
kind good, bad and indifferent can be seen
at any hour of the day, "cutting about like
mad." If a man will fill a tub with ice-cold
water, place his nude feet in it, with the cold
north wind blowing on him, and hire a cheap
boy tojinglo a small cow bell, and hit him
with a hard snow-l all occasionally, he will
enjoy himself as well as if sleigh-riding;
besides it is much cheaper. Try it, and see.
Wc charge nothing for the recipe.
w The Democrat. We did not issue last
week because It was impossible to obtain pa-j
per. The paper on which we issue to-day
was procured from Salem, and is some small,
cr than usual ; bpt we are glad to have any
thing in the form of paper. The tcjegraph
lines beinz demoralized, we are unable to
give much Congressional or other news from
the States. " We do the best circumstances
will permit, and trust our readers will tear
with us until the weather-blockade is remov
ed. "
The Pcblic Debt. We ask special atten
tion to the editorial article on this subject,
ia another column. We there show how the
yuplic debt can be paid, in twelve or fifteen
jears, without increasing the present amount
cf currency, or raising a solitary dollar more
ly taxation than is now raised. We direct
Attention to it, hoping it will be thoroughly
scanned, and if based upon wrong calcula
tions, that some one will show thorn up.
We invite discussion.
connected in some capacity with Settlemier
L Co., of this place, has recently purchased
tie Drug'Store of Whittemore & Co. As he
proposes next week to make his bow to the
readers of the Democrat we shall say no
more, except that be is a good fellow, under
stands his business, and will undoubtedly
receive a fair share of public patronage.
- Slightly "Stcck." McDonald intimates
that about one "hundred brilliant young la
dles, each armed with a vey white pocket
h andkerchief," waved them at him when he
was here last Saturday. There is no doubt
the ladies of Albany are hard to excel ; but
w e understand McDon aid is a grass-widower ,
and this fact will readily account for the ex
treme susceptibility of his gizzard.
lgyThe Unionist says the Albany Grant
. Club have got the Albany Democracy "eorae-
what subjugated." Yea we are badly sub
jugated. A short time ago we wrested the
city from the Radicals by electing tho en
. tire Democaatio ticket, one excepted; and
tlis, too, after the Rads. had governed it
from time immemorial. We are badly sub
jt gated in a horn. Louder on "subju
gated." Wheat. Within the last few days past,
w heat-growers have hauled in considerable
wheat ; the snow affording an excellent op
portunity for its transportation to tho city.
it now bears a remunerative price, ninety
ancLninety-five cents being the figures. '
Brownsville Democratic Club. The
Democracy of Brownsville Precinct will or-
gacaze a Club to-day. We are satisfied that
ti e "unterrified" of Brownsville will make
it mighty hot for the Grantites of that local
ity during the coming campaign.
New Officers. At . a meeting recently
hoi I of the new Board of Directors of the
' Linn County Agricultural Society, A. Hack
le man was elected President ; E. II. Griffin,
Vice President ; James Elkins, Secretary;
and D. Froman, Treasurer.
CnmvARi. One of our friends, who re
cently married thereby doing ono of the
most sensible things he ever did in his life
was duly treated to & "chirivari" Thurs
day night last. Tho crowd of youngsters
made night hideous for some time, thereby
disturbing, not only thonewlv-married coud-
le, but all tho pooplo in their immediate vi
cinity. Jta
This is an old French custom j and was
originally an expression of joy ; but as it
is at present conducted, it is generally an
unmitigated nuisance. Such gatherings aro
a sort of mob and may bo dealt with, sum
marily. Somo ten or twelvo venrs aeo cx-
Governor Bebb, of Ohio, moved to Illinois
and shortly afterward a dauchter of Ins was
married. ' At night a crowd gathered about
his dwelling and commenced operations.
The Governor warned them to desist three
several tinies ; but not heeding his warnings,
ho tired a double-barrelled unfit-sun. loaded
with buck-shot.' into thpir milftt wonndim

The Governor yielded himself up and was
tried and acquitted without much difficulty.

DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM.
Adopted by the Albany Democratic Club, Dec. 23, C7.
Httolcrd, That we aro a favor of the Cun:!lu.

and In favor of a etrlct ennctructton thereof; an4

with unswerving fidelity to the Union under the
Constitntion as the only solid foundation of our

as a frame-work of government eqaallj conducive
to the irofpeiitj and welfare of the States, loth

Ilttoletd, That the Government of the Unite d

we are tpposed to extending tho riht of suffrage
to the tegro or any cf the inferior racesof this

IieolreJf That w are opposed to the so-called
Reconstruction policj of Congress, as unconstitu
tional, and regard it as tuh-banded uturjmticn
and lawless tyranny, enacted for the purposo of
destroying tbj equality and rights o the utc
under the Constitution, and breaking up the local
gorernmtnts of th Ftates, and thus destroying
the Republic with no higher aim than the perpetu
ation of party power.
IteioUed, That under our HepuLliran form of
Government the burden of taxation tbould not be
imposed on the peoplo without the r'uht of repre
sentation ; w. arc in faror, therefor;, of the Southern
States, a wt-tl as all the other f tLe Stat;, bar.
ing a fair and equal representation in tbe national
Congress under the Constitution.
tteiolced. That we are in faror of equal and ex
act justice t all and special farors to none, believ
ing that our republican system of jroverrs merit is
intended to extend tbe greatest goud to tbe prcr.t
et number; in faror of a repeal of tbe existing
tariff law, enacted for tbe protection of the few
at the expense of tbe many; in faror of abrogating
the present reckless and profligate system of pub

retrenchment and reform.
Jtewlced, That we are in faror of equal taxation
for the support of the Federal and ut Govern

therefore, in faror of taxing Uniud Slatt Bondt,
Rtt'dted, That as Democrats, we again reaf
firm our open and unceasing political hostility to
the present Republican party, "and declare that by
its palpable determination to perpetuate the su
premacy of military power in tbe United States ;
by its attempt to preserve the ascendency of a mi
nority through the subversion of the Government ,
by its unceasing aggressions upon the freedom of
speech and of the press ; by its open and active
friendship for despotic forms of government ; by
its invention of faje excuses for tyranny; by its
unscrupulous taxation of the people for the aggran
dizement of its power and the enrichment of its
leaders : by its odious alliances with tbe tradition
al enemies of republican institutions ; by its shame
less assaults upon tbe elective franchise; by its
substitution of partisan decree for the supreme
law; by its intended abrogation of the reserved
rights of tbe States and paramount maintainance
of a standing army to enforce compliance with its
usurpations has proven false to all its pretensions
of patriotism, false to the Government and the

of freedom throughout toe civilized world.
Rtnolttd, That we hereby invite all who accept
the sentiments expressed in tbe foregoing resolu

A name easily understood, and not easily for

never, to our knowledge, having failed in a single

in the earlier stages of tbe disease.
No medicine has been more successful iacurine
Fever and Ague, and other diseases incident to

have failed. It is eminently a Family Medicise,
