We bad not room in our last to Niy nil we intended to say alxmt "Thanksgiving Day. Services were held in the two Presbyterian churches of this city. Wo attended the First or O. S. Presbyterian Chapel. Judging from what we had heard in former years, on similar occasions, we expected that the discourse, which was de Vivered by Rev. E. R. Geary, would )hcav. ily interlarded with ypicy admixtures of par. zn politics, but we were very asrecnbly disappointed. Xot a sentiment was uttered we did not cordially endorse. "Whether the pastor of the U. I, church pursued the same wise course we have not learned. We learn from ft friend from Corvalli that Rev. Mr. Simpson delivered the discourse on Thanksgiving Day, and hat he exhibited amazing dexterity in steering between Seylla an I Charybdis. Jli people now know just n much a to how he stands on the. ereat po litical isues of the day as they did before. No more and no less. Perhaps this is owing to the fact that a Methodist minister North was neated on one side of him and a Metho. dist minister Smth was on the other. "We regard these a hopeful sign of the times. Until qoitorocor.tly our clerical gen trv, with only an occasional exception, have desecrated Thanksgiving D;iy by delivering nertaor.s full of partisan politics and bigotry, We take the gmund that when a minister preaches partiicn politic when be ues the Sabbath and the pulpit as vehicles for the dissemination and promulgation of hi polit !eal views, he not only exhibits bad tnste and offers a direct inult to a portion of hi hearers, but he is guilty of a mot heinous moral wrong-a wrong which wjil caue the blood of souls to cling to his skirts in the gviit Day of Eternity. County Commissioners. At the Decem ber term of the Co. Commissioner. Court, it was ordered that the Court House shall not be rented for the purpose of shows, the aters, kc. It was also ordered that an order be issued in favor of Driggs 3c, Arnold for $$00 dollars in payment for building the Public Square fence, &c. The contractors inform us that this fence will be finished in about two weeks. As the Comissioners were about to adjourn on yesterday an alternative Writ of Mandam tu was gerved upon them, which directs the Board to make an order declaring the road running through a portion of John Wilson's lands to be a public highway, and establish ing the same as snch according to law. A majority of the Board Wheeler and Clover refused to obey the Writ ; and as a conse quence th e case will come up again Loforo the next Circuit Court, CyoREEspoxDEXTS.-"Those who read the Democrat need not be told that we are erad ually drawing around us a coterie of writers of no mean ability and acquirements. Their communications are always readable, and .sometimes more than ordinarily interesting. We wish to say, in this connection, that we do not necessarily endorse all the tentiments they utter. We have ever been an ardent advocate of freedom of speech and of the press ; and we are williug to accord toothers the same rights wo claim for oursclf. We have known communications so emasculated that their authors could scarcely recognize them as their productions. We generally give a man a full hearing or none at all, - Thet Diz Hard. We understand that Qur Radical friends threaten to contest the " lata city election ; and that some of them claim that thirty Democratic illegal votes ; were cast, and should be thrown out. Would it not be well to assume that all Democratic votes cast on last Monday are illegal ? The Mongrels have had hold of the public teat 'so long in Albany that they hate to let go they 4ie very. hard. They had better go 'loir. . . ;' .' , The Weather. C. Hill,: Mr, Moses Smith, of Marion country to Mrs. Lney Eton ghton, of Linn county. The Economy of Hkaltu. This busy nttiou of Americans have 12,000,000 working pcnplo, whoso services may bo es timated at $2 a day, and their annui! loss by sicknesa at an average of ten day oiohjin the year. This gives a total loss of $240,000,000 a sum thrco times an largo us the whole cost of the General Government, including the Army, Navy Post Offices, Legislators, Foreign minis tors and all. Tito amount weighs over six hundred tons iu pure gold. A large proportion of this costly suffer ing might bo advened by attention to diet, cleanliness, and above all, by the proper use of the right rcmedv in seasons. When a 25 cnt box of Ayer pills will avert an attack of illness which it would tako several days to recover from, or a dollar bottle of Ayer'a Sarsapurilla, will expel a lurking disorder that would bring tUo sufferer to his back for weeks or months, docs it take any figures to show the good economy of tho -investment ? When Fever and Anuc is nnkling in your veins, and shaking your life out ot you, is it worth the dollar it costs for his Atrue cure to have the villainous disorder expel led, which it does surely and quickly? When you have taken a cold is it prudeut to wait until it has settled on the lungs, when days or weeks or months must be spent in trying to cure it, even, if it can be cured ut all, or is it cheaper to take Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, costing a few shillings, and remove the trouble before it is serious J It takes no wisdom to decide. Last September was at Work cutting solo leather with a die and a beavy iron mullet. I made a mustrike, and tho mallet came down witb its whole force upon my thumb, splitting it fum tho first joint entirely open, and laid the bone bare. I supposed 1 bad ruined my thumb forever, but I thought of your IViu Killer, aud went about a ha'f a milo and obtained a bottle. I saturated a little ctton batting, first winding a waxed thread around the wound, and applied tho Pain Killer, saturating the bundagu two or throe times a day. in five minutes the pain coated, and in a week it entirely I e tied up, and I will say eh at I nivcr seeu.anjthiug for healing qualities that equalled it, and I would earnestly recommeud it to the pub. lie us a ptin killer and a healer. . ; -"' Yours truly, R.
