Tax Inaugural. Last Tuoaday an In
augural Address was delivered, bj Rev. W.
J. Monteith, in the College Chapel, to a
yctj icapect&blo audience of scholars and
citilCTS The order-of exercises "was as
follow j : 1. Singing by the School an ap
frropriate pieca from the "SiWcr Lute," led
hjVnti. Warren and Miss Beach at the me
lodiam 2.. Prayer by Rer. .E. II. Geary.
3,: Remarks by same, in tho course of which
he has dsoraely complimented tho Board of
Trustees and architects for tho fidelity with
trhich they have severally executed the ticsts
repose I in them. He contended that the
building, as far as it had gone, was superior
in its &nish and the durable and meritorious
Character of its work to any other similar
institution in the State-j in all of which we
concur ; 4. The Address.. Wo took copious
notes cf most of it, but will not go much in
to detail. We were well pleased with it,
and, tfpijght it ory appropriate and judici
ous. A.S to Goyernment the speaker said
th,e.r. were tq kjnda: one of authority,
and thj Qth,er of Reason. The latter will be
that by which Albany Collego will gov
erned. As to religion it will possess, not
a sectarian, but a positively religious charac
ter. The Bible will be a text book, and a
true, Catholic spirit of Christianity will be
inculcated.
; A system of laudable emulation among
ijudents will be introduced.
he classics, ancient a3 well as modern,

5. Closed by singing "America," and
benediction by Judge Geary ; after which
most of the audience went up to the cupola
and bad a magnificent view of Linn county,
of the Cascade Mountains, the "Three Sis
ters," "St. Mary's Mountain," and the
Coast Range. Were it not for Hackleman's
Qrore Qld Mount Iftxx could have been seen
al3Q. There are few observatories in the
world from which can be seen a larger num
ber of grand and noble objects than may be
viewedtOf a clear day f from the cupola of
Albany College.
To Exchanges. For some reason wa
have failed to receive the Salem CJironich
fqr the' l.nst two or three weeks. What is the
matter, brother "Ltou ? Deign to let us see
your srailing faco occasionally,
We do r,ot now receive tho Vancouver
Jiegisttr at all. JThat is the matter? We
pever considered it anything extraordinary,
and we can ciist without it. Still, we would
Jike to have it on the principle that every
body needs inore or less straw and bran in
grder to secure the most vigorous digestion.
We receive the Weekly Oregonian in ex-
chacffe ; but it would suit us much Letter to
have the Daily ; not that we are desirous to
get our telegraphic news from it, but to see
its local news before it gets "stale, fiat and
unprofitable." Also, the Oregonian occa
sionally combats some of the political views
we express j but under the present regime
some eight, ten or fourteen days transpire
ere wc can reply. Come, brother Soojt, be
generous for once ; seed us your Daily as
you do the long-shanked editor of the Chron
icle. We will no call you the "school-boy
editor," or tha "fat booby;" but, if we
should 4eem fc necessary, we will notice you
genteelly and take your scalp with a razor.
Peekitu List. We suppose we finish to
day the Premium List. We say we " sup
pose" we do j we are not certain. We
fhought we had published the last of it in
P$r last number ; but you see we vbre mis
taken. Our esteemed friend, James Elkins,
Secretary of the Linn County Agricultural
Society has given it p3 us in broken doses j
and for fear it might hurt our Democratic
atomach, ke'ha had the doses aforesaid filter
ed through the Journal before administering
them to U3. We do not blame the Journal
at all we want that understood. The editor,
trjija far j has Ijpen the mqst fair and gentle
manly exponent & eve.r Jad and wp hav
Jifjd 4 gr? many during our editorial ca
r eer ; aQd we are very desirous, while be
treats us thus, not to say a word or do a
thing that will afford him just cause of of
fence. -

JIaedware, ccp. -Mr. Conner unfurls his
busines? banner to-day in the Democrat.
jn addition to having a large and excellent
assortment of IJardware, he has also Dry
Goods, Groceries, Boots, Shoe.s, Clothing, &c.
He is noted in this community as a man of
strict business integrity-and very few words,
lie never "honey-fugles" anybody; but he

answers your queries in monosyllables,;

- New Books. Freeland has received with--in'the
laat few days, a good assorment of
miscellaneous books. Some of them are el
egantly bound, and being by standard and
approved authors, would make elegant pres
ents to favored and. loved friends and rela
tives. ,. - ;
: Wanted. One thing much needed in Al
bany is 3, first-rate jeweler one who under
stands his business thoroughly in' all its
branches. Such an one, if he will come
here, and locate permanently, will make
money, if he is temperate, and industrious.

PROsrECTiNO. Capt. N, B. Humphrey
and three others last Tuesday started for his
newly-discovered mines in the Cascado moun
tains, having a good team, and plenty of
provisions, and each carrying a good gun
and a plentiful supply of ammunition. One
thing the party intend doing is to take a ton
of the oro or rock to the Santiam mines and
have it crushed and tested by tho old Califor
nia miners having the Santiam mines in
chargo at present.
Hrs Head is Level. An agent of ours,
writing to us and stating that ho would get
a club of subscribers for tho Democrat, says :
"I lelioTe it is of the utmost importanoo now
to use all the facilities we possess to increase the
circulation of Democratic papers. Tho oauso we
advocate is prospering, ami every person who feels
an interest in it must feel in duty bound to aailst
la promulgating the groat, undying principles that
will ultimately result in riotory." .
Si'ddex Death. Joshua Younger, living

is supposed that he died of heart disc e. ,

the LATEST IMPROVEMENTS for safety and
durability. My connection with the Upper Ferry,
