SATURDAY..... .....SEPTEMBER 23, 1867. For the State Rights Democrat. LECTURES BY REO. H. SPAULD1NG Early Orejron Sllsslons Their Im- fortance in Serurlug the Couu rjr to Amerclaus. HCHBER TWISTT-88TK5. On the evening of the 3d of Sent. 1830 wc arrived at Fort Walla Walla, and our eyes rested on the losoni of the long wished for Columbia. Mr. P. C. Pamhran, clerk of tho II. 13. Co. in charge, received and treated us with tho greatest kindness, and ever after to the day of his death (in 1841, by being thrown upon the horn of his saddle by a vicious horse) he was ever a most agreeable and faithful friend of us as missionaries. Here our. days of starvation came to end, and our bleached, and mouldy dry buflalo bull meat, if any were left was thrown to the dogs, which of course they would not eat. We found here plenty of bread, corn, jpotatocs, milk, butter and Walla "Walla elk beef, (wiliV horse beef). Cattle were not al lowed to be killed, at this, or any of the II. B. posts, by a rule of the Com pany. Mrs. Barcley, wife Dct. Bar cley of Oregon City, daughter of Mr. Pambran, then a "lovely girl of 12 years, will recollect with what a keen relish we devoured the abundance of food brought upon tho table by her kind father and mother. Our labori ous journeys for the last five months of 2,300 miles, according to our own measurement, and about the same ac cording to Freeinont, from the bor ders of Missouri had come to an end, and under God a glorious end, widely different from what had been fearfully anticipated by a large circle of friends, and by every mountain traveler. Our dear wives instead of falling hopeless victims into the hands of powerful bands of prowling savages, or perish ing for want of food and water, or be ing crushed under the daily accumu lating toils, and hardships, and priva tions of a seven months' unceasing journcyings, over sky-piled, snow-capped mountains, through broiling sand deserts, where foot of white woman never before had trod; sick or well, compelled to travel on ; rising every morning perhaps with every bone quivering with pain, not to rest, but but to mount the also jaded horses, and urge on for another night's bed upon the cold earth or rocks, with a blanket thrown down; their supper and breakfast, if any, to be sent in by their Father in Heaven from the wild buffiilo bands ; and even sleep, when so much needed, driven awav by the hourly increasing anxiety. l$ut now they were alive. Thank the Lord ! O, our souls, thank the Lord! Yes, and in good health and spirits, with their feet standing by the bank of the ma jestic Columbia, "Queen of the West;" the first American women to throw their angelic shadows upon its silvery bosoms. Xoble Christians! Ameri can heroines ! worthy the countrv that gave you birth ; worthy the pa rents that dedicated you to (od worthy the noble Board that honored Jrou with an embassy of heavenly ove to these distant shores, and whom in turn yoi lionored by so great a work as also by remaininc: true to vbur colors and falling at vour nosts. St e M. Your enterprise, the day you set foot upon the banks of the Columbia, was cnansred from a Missionary to a Na tional one, and became a work of the greatest-importance to your country, as it virtually saved this Great Pacific West, with all its untold importance, to your country, just as Great Britain was about to add it, with its rich gold fields, to her vast dominions. Xoble Americans ! faithful soldiers of the cross ! In less than fifty years you will receive, by the faithful historian, tne iionor ana praise due tne impor tant services you rendered to your count ry. Fort Walla Walla (Xez Perces), cow waiiaia stood on the leit or east bank of the Columbia, at the Great Bend, ' near " the mouth of the .Walla Walla river, 9 miles below the mouth of Lewis river, 612 miles from Fort Hall, 1,000 miles to the South Pass, lat 4503VJ,500 above the sea. The river at this point is 3,600 feet wide. The Fort is a wooden stockade 200 "feet square and 18 fiet high, with a broad walk on the ' top vall around ; two large bastions, one at the north- jeast and one at the southwest corners of the Fort, always well armed with a small cannon and muskets; guard kept at night. The timbers of the Fort were procured from the drift wood of the Columbia, hewed and sat close : in a deep trench dug in the gravel. Half the enclosure was divi ded off for a horse-yard, while the oth er half contained the store, rude shops, ! quarters fcr men, dwelling for the clerk, and a large Indian room the two latter floored and containing one small window in each. It was built i iir;I820; burned down in 1842, and re built" with adobes. Cattle of the Fort, j Spanish breed, with vine-maple horns, j and rolling fat, of course, at that time j of-the year and, on that grass; but none to be killed for beef, consequent ly wild horses supplied the table with koice steak, relished well if the ani mal was not heated by running just before killing. There were horses in abundance, : and about ' as cheap as sheep in the States. Corn aud pota toes of the best quality, as they always are in that country. T!AT.SAf .ml h Atl.n.t.;,. medicines is this: the popular druz medicine. when taken into the stomach, make you sick, while the sensation created by my Thoracic Ualsam is as soothing as a cup of tea. When the drug medi cines, taken by thetnnltitade of victims who hare died with the consumption, find their way into the lungs, they immediately commence to irritate and inflame the ulcers and increase tho flow of matter. As a consequence, the patient expectorates more freely, and as be coughs and spits his lifts away, he thinks, because he raises such a quantity, and raises it so easily, that he is certainly recovering; and under this common delusion he continues to take the medicines, and continues to couh and spit, until exhausted nature submits and he finds relief in the grave. On the other hand, when my Thoracic Babam finds its way into the lungs it commences at once to heal the ulcers. It govs to the very root of the disease, and gently, but surely, draws all morbid humor from the ulcerated parts. It purifies the blood, as it is composed wholly of vegetable ma terials. It strengthens and does not debilitate the general system. It tends to quiet the nerves and invigorate the patient and assist in relieving the congested condition of the lungs, by diffusing the accumulated blood over the surface, and it clears away the obstructions that impede egress of all the impurities of the body through tbeir natural chan nels the bowels and more especially does it tend to draw all excretion from tho lnngs, and induces a new and vigorous action to the liver and imparts strength and new life to the patient. Bear this in mind, that the secret of the success of my Thoracic Balsam lies enclosed in this little nut-shell ; first, it does not irritate the lungs and cause the patient to expectorate ; second, it does commence at once to heal the ulcers; it soothes and allays the infiamation, and stops the coughing and expectoration ; it strengthens and encourages the patient, and, with proper nourishment, he must recover. This medicine don't give you new lungs ; it only mends up yonr old ones, and, with care they may take you away on into a good old age. I connot close without saying a word to my own sex. I am now In my sixty-first year, and can truly say that with all my experience with female diseases, I have found it the safest and best reme dy, and no woman ic delicate health should be without it. Dr. Ayer truthfully remarks that less than one-half of the females of the United States have sound health, and the condition of the disor dered ones is leaving its impress on the rising gen eration. Then, bow important we should have a remedy for these evils. For painful or suppressed menses, irregularities, etc., and also for women at the turn of life, and frail girls, this medicine will be found invaluable. It should also bo used be- fore and after confinement. Dr. Doherty Dear Sir t I fee! mv health so fol- ly reHo.td that, in common gratitude, I believe l snouid make you corne written acknowledgment for your valuable services particularly to as vous fee was small for the work performed.. I arrived in tins city from the East about ne year ago, and was then suffering from an old case of Gleet, complicated with stricture. Being a stranger in this city, and believing those doctors who gave sueb positive assurances of success were neeMsarily the bert, (come of whom bave a large number of titles) I placed myself in their charge, and continued under their treatment until I bad loit nearly all Lope and considerable sum of money. i wun u say now mat yon are the sixth doctor I bave employed, and the only one that baa ever done me any service. My. Gleet is wholly eared, the stricture is all removed, and my general health U better than it has been fur yew. In conclusion I woui'isay to ine many unfortunates who require medical advice, if you bave any donbt as to whom yoo may employ, ask Dr. Doherty for my address ana can ana see me. (1 seep atoro in this ailr.J My experience may save yon many dollars. would also add that in the early stare of mv di. ease, I used a Urge amount of the preparations ad vcrtUcd as an infallible cure for Gonorrhoea, Gleet, etc., but never derived any benefit from tbem. I am, Uoetor, very truly yours, L H , fan rrnnctsco, June 16. 1861. Fubscribed and sworn to before me this 21 et day of Junes, 1864. A, g. Doherty, alone inducts me to make this statement. For manv Tears I have been filleted with that fearful disease known as 'Spermatorrhoea;" or Seminal Weaknesses, the result cf stlf-abuse, but till 1855 experienced bat little trouble or inconvenience. In that year, however, I bad Seminal Weakness to an alarming extent, which was soon followed by the most alarming sympUms, as weakness of the back and limbs, pains in the head, dimness of vision, nerv onsness and general debility. My mind, too, was slBictca to such an extent as to seriously impair my memory ; my ideas were confused and spirits depreiced. I was averse to society, had evil fore- btmings and self distrust, and was entirely unfit ted for any of the duties of life. From 1S55 to the summer of 1SC3, 1 employed the very best medical talent I could find, and spent several hundred dol, lars, but in no instance obtained more than tern porary relief. 1 bad about concluded there waa no relief for me in this world, but seeing Dr.Dc. berty's advertisement, I thought I should call and see him. as he ohargod nothing for consultation. I bad an interview with the Doctor, and his fee ror treatment was so reasonable, I determined to try him. though I did not expect mnen benefit from his treatment. On the 5th of December last I placed myself under his care; in ane week I found myself very much improved, and now, after fiva weeks treatment, 1 feel myself thoroughly cured of all my troubles and in the enjoyment of the best bealtn. Hoping that my experience may be cf benefit to ethers eimilarly afflicted, I subscribe myself JAMES JOHNSTON Subscribed an sworn to before me, this 15ln day of January, 1864. (l. a. A. G.
