MBrkacut Cattle. Dr. L.. a friend of
ours, living less than an hundred miles from
Albany, has a cow that is much addicted to
jumping into his neighbor's enclosures;
which uglj habit annoys tho good Doctor ex
ceedmglj much more than it does his
neighbors. "We recollect that his cow once
jumped into tho garden of a certain editor j
whereupon tho Docjqr gavo her a terrible
walloping and she has not since repeated
the offence. But wa aro digressing. Our
friend, the Poctor, recently read in a news
paper and you know editors never tell sto
ries or play tricks on their readers that
when bovino quadrupeds are addicted to the
bad habit of jumping, they can be effectually
cured simply by shaving off their eyelashes
"Eureka !" exclaimed the Doctor, and forth
with he provided himself with a sharp pair
of scissors, a good feed of branj potatoes,
Ac., and proceeded to the Rtable-yard, deter
mined to apply the remedy instanter. His
bitter half, on seeing him thus armed and
equipped, and so furiously rushing round,
inquired what was the matter ? "Matter 1"
said he, "I am going to perform a surgical
operation on the old cow, and cure her of
jumping I" 'Twos in vain Mrs. L. protes'
ed the cow's eyelashes had to come off
you bet. The cow was fastened the Doctor
seized her horns the bright shears gleamed
in the sunlight scientifically the Doctor ar
proached her peepers, when forthe first time
ho found his cow had no eyelashes 1
"Sold !" said the Doctor ; "badly sold !"
and retired.
Judge Dbcmmoxd. The Salem Record in
a recent number, makes some remarks about
th;s gentleman, which may, in some re
spects, leave a false impression on the pub
lic mind.
Judge Drummond, from 1849 to 1851, was
Judge of the ICth Judicial District of Illi
nois. In 18-52 he was sent to Utah, as Judge,
by President Pierce. He retained this posi
tion until 3Ir. Buchanan went into office,
when he resigned and came home ; and it
was through his representations that federal
soldiers, under Gen. Johnston, were sent to
Salt Lake for the purpose of preserving ir:
der and enforcing federal laws. Judge D.
subsequently removed to California; mak
ing that his home until recently. His fami
ly are there at present, but he Is now in Al
bany ; and it affords us pleasure to say that
he is so well pleased with our thriving cily
and noble county, that he has determined
to send for his family and settle here imme
diately. Judge D. does not need a recom
mendation from us ; but if he should, we
would say that, for the last twelve or fifteen
years we have known him more or less inti
mately ; that he stood high in the legal fra
ternity of Illinois ; that he is a true friend
and gentleman in the broadest sense ; and
as mich he will be a ralubable acquisition to
our community. -
Acknowledgments. Since our last issue
Jonas Davis, living near Peoria, presented
the Democrat office with a good lot of nice
free-stone peaches. Also,
Mr. Millard, a bachelor flora-culturist,
presented the office with several fine cantel
opes and several exquisite boquettes. Also,
Mr. Burkhart, living on the Salem road, a
mila from town, presented the Secretary of
our Domestic Affaires a goodly quantity of
choice seedling prunes.
17e sometimes have serious notions not to
buy any sort of truit and nice fixings ; ho
pin;; and almost believing that our numer.
Gus friends will generously supply all our
fruit and vegetable gastronomic demands.-
Surely no Establishment ever had more nu
merous evidences of kindly regards than has
ours from its multitudinous friends through
out the county.
The Cikccs. Lee & Itjland's "New York

the Fair Grounds on Tuesday and "Wednes

of the firm, has made a trip to San Francis
co and returned with several important ac
cessions to their troupe, such as an cquistri
an, a gymnast, and a clown the latter said
to bo equal, if not superior, to the popular
Harry Jackson, who traveled with this com
pany laat year.

.London, bept. il. rublic suspense
is ercat relative to tho reply of the Sub-

U feared that too much reliance will be

placed upon tho friendship of England

fuse to comply with the demands o! Rus

bio between tho Turks and Russians,
