AUGUST 8i;18fl7 IVhnt Republican think and say about Taxation. i V I. Harper's Weekly which has been for years stimulating the passions of tho peo ple, tnd hpundiDg on lUilicals, by pic tures caricaturing the South, and appeals to prejudice and hate begins to experi ence a sensation in his pocket, and i'u? minates tho following bull against the 'only loyal party" ? styled by Greeley "narrow minded blockheads who would like t j scrrc a; great; cause, but don't know how !" When such journals as Harper's Week ly find fault with the action of tho Had ical party, it is time the people began to look ait 'facts as they are and not bo led cap tives by their passions and prejudices. After declaring that "tho great and par amount question of the day will soou be tho - debt and taxation of tho people," that paper says : . , uWc cannot help thinking, and saying. too, in strict confidence to the readers of this journal, that stupid, and dull, aud voiceless as the public may be, he has some rights which politicians will sooner or latar have to recognize. . He is now paying a tax at the rate of seven per cent, more than is paid b? most heavily taxed peoplo of Europe, and at the same time he is paying for commodities of all kinds. and labor fifty-five per cent, moe than any other people in the world. In En gland the taxes are heavy, no doubt, but xoou, ciotniag and rent are cheap, in T : - t . ,i ' x jauij, uviug is expensive, du& mo taxes are light: but in the United States the public groans under the simultaneous bur den of heavy taxes and expensive living. W e have a notion that, sooner or later, he will rebel against this load, and that the party, who laid it on his shoulders will irselt bo laid pretty low. Evry word of that is good Copperhead doctrine; and we are irlad that the liar pets and thousands like them have con eluded that it is time to "rebel" vs "this load," and -Miave a notion that the party which, laid it on our shoulders will itself be lail pretty low." We have been of this opinion for some time. -The fruits of- radicalism bejrm to "sour on the stomach," in the shape of un digested taxes "hirrher than those in Rus sia or -England," and. "expensive living DO to loO per cent, higher than any oth er pec pie ia the world." If the East be cin3 thus Eastern PenuLUrans what "narrow-minted blockheads," Western men are, to bear all these burdens with 50 to 150 per cent, more added by the Iladicil tariff, and still whine of our "loy alty.r to the party imposing these bur dens upon us. ' Stupidity is no name for it St Paul Pioneer. Josh Hilling ou Arletuns Ward. We don't believe, says the Troy Uad gc.Josh Billings ever wrote anything prettier or more touehing than the follow ing. We don't believ that philosophy wa3 ever better united to the tenderness of grief.- It is poetry in dishabille; it is the heart of an honest man in yellow plash : "Jo.su Billings to Autemus Ward. I am Bad. and I am orry." . - , ; , Writing to us (continues the Budget) Josh says modestly, as if an apology were necessary, UI cannot write epitaphs in my 6tyle, and if I don't use my style, nobody will thank me lor the effort. If a man stand on his head once, he has got to stand on his head the balance of his days. We can't put on, the cap and ever wear the citizen's fdres3 again. Ily cootl iuck as tno muiiumic inougiu she was summoned as a witness on trial. Tho gossips rubbed their hands ami chuckled. "Aha I we shall know it now. He nodded, made the entry in his private notes, and, smiling, continued the rest of his in terroutories as soon as she hail re sumed her place on the stool. The public retired with mingled feelings of discrust and admiration. Tho trial had lost all further interest, and the nrosident was known to be a man of honor and gallantry, who would never let a nrcttv woman s cat escape trom his presidential bag. Women' would do well to remem ber nor can the truth be impressed upon them at too early an age that all the brilliant accomplishments, all the solid information, all the learning in the world, are worth nothing in comparison to a patient, cheerful tem per, and an affection for, and perse vere ncc in, the moral and domestic duties of life. Home ought to be the temple of a virtuous female: she may leave it occasionally, and be happy amid the beautiful fruits and flowers of the world; but let her, like the bee, gather honey from them all, and let that honcv be reserved for her own dwel liner, let it be a palace or a cot tage.
