SATURDAY.. AUGUST 31, 16C7. " ' ' money Market. Sen Franclseo Legal Tender rates 711072 New York Gold yuotations H4 iJ Subscriber finding an X marked on tho mara of their paper, will understand that the time for which they have paid for the Democrat has expired, and will govern themselves accord ingly. Albaxt. Some people have an idea that the rord humbug mean a big black bu with shining ejes and large crescent-shaped horrs, and that makes a sort of humming sound. The great American lexicographer, howoTer, defines humbug to be "an impos tor under fair pretenses j a person who thus imposes." In the course of our life,- which has been some what varied and eventful, wo hare lived in several cities of more or less importance ; but none of theta has pleased us so well, all thincs considered as does Albany. Vc like Albany because it is a real live, go-ahead place more so than anj other in the State at tho present time. "We like its neat and comfortable-looking appearance. We like its miles and miles of good sidewalks par ticularly in the rainy season. "We lik its noble Court House second to none iu the State, that at Portland excepted. " We like its neat and commodious church edifices. We like its present and prospective educa tional advantages. We like its business men its industrious and skilled mechanics its liberal and large-hearted merchants Its ingenious manufacturers and excellent artists. We like the toleration practised by a largs majority of both political parties and all religious denominations. We like the social lit j observed so generally by all class es. Yfe like the temperance of Albany. We like its vigorous and all-prevalent mor ality. We like the pure religious principles which so generally permeate and influence. more cr less strongly, the entire, structure of Albany society. And-last, though not least, we like that phase or feature of our city which so generally causes it to give a' 1 hum bugs a wide berth. It matters not what form they assume what their pretensions whether they are engineered by the mascu line or feminine persuasion, or both Al bany denizens detect their true character as by intuition. Pure, noble, majestic Albany ! 3day you ever maintain your present excel lence and high standing in all the essential elements of prosperity and happiness ! Pacific Hotel. This building is pro gressing finely, and when completed our town will be better provided with hotel ac commodations than it has ever been. The main building is CCxlOO feet two stories j first story is 12 feet, second 11 feet in the clear. On the roof are a promenade and observatory 10x40 feet, provided with seats and railing. A porch runs round the entire house. Rooms will be large, well-furnished and ventilated. Whole house lathed and plastered. It will have a bar and reading room 2Gx3G feet. There will be connected with it a large force pump and hose for ex tinguishing a fire should one occur. Also, large transom lighs altove each door for ven- iiiaium, uinin room zcx-J leer, uo barbershop and Lath.rooms with sAl the Jate improvements, Prom THEMoLXTaixs.-From Dr. Alexan der, who is just in from the Cascade Moun tains, we learn several facts that maj inter est some of our readers. Visitors to Soda Springs tnd Fish Iake, 4cM ar6 numerous. Game is plenty now, esnecialj in the "Burnt pish-ict-" JJerries are about all gone. Be tween three and four hundred of the Warm Spring Jndi&ns are now on a hunt near the Sod Springs, They hare their women and children along, and no danger is apprehen ded. Nevertheless we had much rather they were confined to their Refervation. They slaughter game that properly belongs to the whites ; besides there are those who are pre vented from visiting the mountains with their families, in consequence of their presence. Plums. On Wednesday last Mrs. "Walter JIoxteith, of this city, sent us a lot of plums, which, for size and quality, beat any thing we ever before saw in the plum line. We selected eighteen at random and placed them in Xorcrofs' scales, and they weighed two and a half pounds averaging 2 cz. and 4 drachms apiece. One measured C inches in circumference. The pits are not larger than in ordinary plums, and the taste is much like that pf p. peach. Some say there is any quantity of fever and ague inside their skins. Bethjsas it may, we managed -to cause several pf them to disappear. Mrs. W. will accept the thanks of the Democrat establishment, Mop and "Wringer Combined. Our townsman, Abraham Bergmann, has in vented wht he terms a "Mop and Wringer Combined," and upon an inspection of the model, we arp of the opinion it will prove a success, It is a mop so arranged that it can be "wrung dry 6imply by turning a .crank, something after the fashion or prin ciple of a modern clothes wringer. A house wife owning such a' mop can scrub her rooms well and not touch her hands to the water. The inventor has applied for a patent, and when it is issued, he designs to manufacture a quantity of them and offer them for sale. America Exchange, Portland. This hotel was formerly known as the Lincoln House, and is situated on the corner of Washington and- Front streets. It is now conducted ty Mr. Quimby, a pleasant and courteous gjntleman who thoroughly under stands his tusiness and spares no pains to render his quests contented and comfortable, lie keeps his tables constantly furnished with all the substantial and delicacies which the Portland market affords, and his charges are very reiisonable. Persons visiting the metropolis would do wejl to "hang up" at the American Exchange. . State FAiR.-The Seventh Annual Fair of the Oregon State Agricultural Society will be held at Sahra, October-7th, 8th, 9th, 10th 11th and 12 :h. We trust all our readers who possibly can vjjl attend j That' SERKXADS.The-proprietors of tho Democrat were severally serenaded last Thursday night by a portion of the Albany Brass Hand. They will accept our thanks. Wo would have presented them in propria persona, from our balcony, had it not been for the fact that, at tho timo of their am val, we were en deshahilU. It would have dono violence to our senso of propriety and shocked tho modesty of our musical friends had we mado a speech to them sans auoltes. MARRIED: CANTERBURY GOODMAN.
