Farm and Garden.
OriMONS of-a Farmer. -I am ncarU
fifty years old, tvas always a farmer, a
rcre niy ancestors, ns far back 03 I can
trace them. My opinions arc formed on
experience and experiments that satisfy
me. whether they do others or not.
OriMON I. -Hay t-hould lc cut whet;
in full bloom, as all plants contain iiH)8t sac
charine matter then, and consequently,
are more nutritions, if used for food, Ii
hay is left hter, the su;ar turns to woody
fibre. AVood and sugat are chemically
the same.
OriNiox II. All heavy or clayey soils
should be plowed in the Autumn, so that
the frosts of Winter may pulverize them
and kill the germa of insects deposited
in the soil for the next season
III. Thj best way to raise calves is to
take them from the cow as soon as dropped;
it possible, never let them suck, as they
learn to eat or drink sooner, and there is
posorc teats from biting, and tho task of
weaning tho calves is soon over. I put
them in a place where sheltered from sun
and rain, give a good bed of straw, and
feed three or four quarto of new milk
per day until three or four weeks old.
then feed skim milk warmed. Let them
have access to hav or prass. By this
method I h:ive raised calves every year
since I can remember, and never lost one
in my life.
IV. Nins-tenths of our farmers do
not sow enough hay seed to the acre. I
have kept increasing the amount, and
have not found a stopping place. The
more seed the more and better hay ; if
timothy and clover, up to half a bushel
rach per acre. If the surface of the
ground ia completely covered tho hay
will be fine, and no weeds can grow. I
have choked out Canada thistles with tim
othy and clover seed sown as thick n
"hair on a dog." . so as to form a good
sod the first summer. Sow early in
Spring, or in February.
V. Oats should be sowed very early,
-as early as possible. I saw a good crop
rai?ed that was sown in February, and was
not harrowed but snowed and rained in. v
VI. Cookinjr fbi for hcrj is better
-than, doublingthe same amount if fed raw.
if you wish to fatten. For breeding,
feed lightly.
VII. Potatoes are worth more .fr all
kinds of stock, than most farmer think
they are. If 3011 can hove temh frozen and
then cooked before they thaw, the starch is
changed to sugar, and I know of no f od
that will fatten faster, or give a better flow
of milk.
VIII. In fattening beef cattle with
jcorn meal,, never, feed so hiirh that you
can see or smell the effect of it in the cx
crements, for if you do you may be ure you
are losing yon r'feed,- as the cattle do not as
similate all the nutriment there is in the
grain.
IX. I believe corn-cobs, jrround with
the corn, useful as residual matter, and
they also contain suar enough to pay for
feeding, if cooked or scalded. In Chicago,
111., they make a good vinegar from sweet
.extracted froai corn cobs-
Ccre for Rattle Snake Bite. Af-
ier many experiments by the officers of
the hmithsoman Institnfe and other ici-
jeutific pentlemen, a certain cure is said
to hare been found for soake bite. It is
23 follows.
Tea grains valine of potassium, and thir
ty grains larhne, to be dissolved in one
ounce j I of .water, to bi Jkept 13 a bottle
with a rnsd piass Copper and to be ap
plied externally- nvrr internally. If
possible, stop the circulation in the parts
bitten; by bandajriojr, and u.e a tick or
abytlunx to tighten the bandage, and ap
ply the solution to the bife with a piece
jof cotton, ppcnpe or anything: that will
.hold the fluid, then bind it to the wound
.and keep wet until the cure is effected.
It is said that five drops of undiluted poi
son from the fangs the rattlesnake,
mixed with five drops of the above solu
tion, and inserted in a wound with a yr
Jngewas as harmless as ten drops of water.
A Good Protector. Mrs Aonia
Brooke, nee Jones, the American actress,
now in Scotland, i always attended by a
.very large Newfoundland dog, endowed
-with wonderful intelligence. He is ad
mitted into the salones which hia mistress
graces; in railway carriagesand steamboats
he hold3 his place by her side, in defiance
,ofrules; he sheps beneath her bed, sits
in a private box wtth her at the toeater,
and watches over her at rehearsals.
Poland. S f Petersburg papers state
-that the Russian government has decided
on obliterating the name of Poland From
April next the name of '-Kingdom of Po
iland" will be replaced by thatj' The
Military Distrct of Warsaw." ; ,
TnE Chinese are queer people to go to
-market. A gentleman at Canton , writes
that a neighbor of hi got in hi vriwtorV
provisions a quarter of a hore and two
.barrels of bull-dogs !
