Novtl mode ofmanatas-aResUvo Horse.
On Saturday last a grooiu, mounted on
a hinh-racttleu hunter, entered the Ili:h
street of Coldstream, and, when opposite
Sir John Majoribank's monument, tho
horse bcsrnn to plumro and rear to a feaful
extent, swerving to the right and theu to
the left, hut go forward ho would not,
, nor could till the. exertions of tho
croom ovcrcomo his obstinacy. The
street was filled with people expecting to
see t!io animal destroy himself on the
spike: of tho iron railing around the mon
ument, when Mr. McDougal, saddler,
walked up to the groom, and said think,
my man, you are not taking the proper
method to make tho horse "go; allow me,
if you please, to show you a trick worth
or ar
knowing." ''Well." savs the irroom. ''if
you can nako him so. it's more than
can," when Mr. McDougal took a piece of
Miupcuru, which ne weu wan a iirin Knot,
on tho end of the animal's car, which he
bent gently down, fastening the end of the
string to the check buckle of the bridle,
which done, he patted the horse's neck
once cr twice, and said, 4Now let mo see
you go quietly home, like a good horse,"
and astonishing to relate, it moved off as
gently ns if nothing had happened. Mr.
McDougal sayshe has seeu, in London,
horses which nu manner uf force could
make go, while this mild treatment was
always successful. Kelso Chronicle.
Hereby Hangs A Talk. Wo clip the
following paragraph from the New York
World: A sister-in-law of the HaJical
member of Congress from the St, Joseph
(Mo.) District, during the war, gratified
her malignity by going out to see four
Confederate youths hanged in cold blood
by jayhawkers. The woman was enceinte
at the time, and soon after a son was born
to her whose tongue' lolls continuously
from his mouth, and whose neck bears the
frayed appearance of one in the Cnal ago
nies cf suffocation.
What a Pint or Whisky Cost.
Soma thirty-one years ago Jonathan lcck
with, a young lawyer of decided promise,
bought a pint of whisky, and getting
drunk, wandered out on Terrc Coupee
prairie on a cold winter night, and was so
badly frozen that he lost his reason and
the use of his limbs, and has been ever
since, until his death two "weeks ago, an
inmate of the county poor-house, an insane
cripple. His keeping has cost the county
no less than fcs.vvu. fcouth lend QlnU.;
