Appalling -accounts of th?. sufferings of
the people of the Southcrja States from fam
ine and destitution, call urgent! on the be
nevolence of the nation for prompt and ade
quate relief. ,
Death is already at work among the suf
ferers. The horrors of starvation press up
on thous; xids in wide districts of the coun
try. To many the promptest action may
come too lata. Multitudes can only be saved
by immediate benefactions, and their contin
uation till the harvest is gathered. .The At
antic States and California are moving. Or
egon will do her part.
A meeting of the citizens will be held at
the Court House, in Albany, on Monday
evening rext, at 7 o'clock, to form a South
f ra Relief Society and contribute to the re
lief fund. -
It is su jsested that similar meetings be
held in each precinct of the county, and aux
iliary societies organized, on the first Mon
day of Miy or as soon as practicable.

A Bilk. Last Saturday evening a "Prof.
J. Compton M. D." delivered a "Lecturo to
Gentlemei only," in the Court House, on
the 'Phycal Causes that lead to divorce, or
.the Separation of Husband and wife." We
.stepped in expecting to be sold and were not
at all disappointed. He is one of the most
arrant blackguards and bilks that ever hum
bugged ary people. Besides this, we regard
him as a corrupter of public morals ; and be
lieve that he should be arrested as such. He
unblushingly proclaims his own infamy by
narrating facts concerning his own wives (he
says he ht-s had three) that every man of true
sensibility and honor would keep locked in
his own bsom forever. "We listened to him
for a while ; but when he coolly advised boys
.and youth to. enter upon a course of licen
tiousness, we left. His influence is bal&ful
and pestiferous in the extreme; and instead of
being countenanced he should be shunned and
denounced by every community he may visit.
Pacific Coast Bcsiness Directory.
.Such is the title of a work just placed in our
hands for inspection. It contains the name
and post office address of each merchant
manufacturer and professional man residing
in the States of California, Oregon and Neva
da; the Territories of "Washington, Jdaho,
3fontana and Utah ; and the Colony of Brit
ish Columbia. Also ,a Gazetteer of tha cit
ies, towns, and counties, and an Exhibit of
the resources of the Paeiffc cocst. Compiled
by Henry G. Langley, Editor of the Califor
nia State Register, State Almanac, 4c.
This is one of the few works we can most
heartily recommend. It is brimfuli and
running over with useful, statistical informa
tion on almost every subject of importance
relative to this Coast. We most cordially
recommend it to the people of Oregon. We
understand that the agent for Linn county,
S. D. Weittaker, will commence to supply
subscribers here in a few days.
New Hotei.. We learn that our towns
men, 3Iessrs. Sprenger and Montgom
ery the firmer of the Pacific and the latter
.of the City Hotel have it in contemplation
to build a large and commodious brick Ho
tel during the ensuing summer and fall ;
provided they can have that encouragement
from property-holders which such an under
taking should receive. A hotel of the kind
they contemplate erecting would mre or
less benefit the entire city ; and it would
cause property in its immediate vicinity to
rjse frgnx one-sixth to one-half its present
value. We bays seen this thing done on
four sefr.il occasions In our lifetime. Men
pf means should nqp be backward in encour
aging this enterprise. To npojirge it is to
consult their best interests.
