Spiritualism ts. Christianity. .
At the close of our remarks on this sub
ject a few days ago we proposed that, if any
Spirit aalist hereabouts desired to respond, he
could do S0j provided ho should not occupy
niore than two columns.
We have beforo us a bps communication
signed "liberty," in whicilthe writer, after
referring to our article on Spiritualism, and
the chief positions we had assumed, states
that he has never "had any affiliation with
any of tho isms of the world that ho be
lieves tho Bible to bo a. fiction, "visionary
and aVsurd and then ho proceeds to at
tempt to show that tho Bibls is inconsistent
and contradictory, and that it is no more en
titled to credence than is tho Koran or the
writir s of Confucius.
"We respectfully decline publishing it. It
does not pretend to be an argument in defenco
of Spiritualism; hence it does cot come
within the scope of our proposal, and there
fore v e are under no obligation to publish it.
If we should publish it wo should, answer it
that is, wo should submit an argument in
favor of the authcnG.cily "of the Bible. Of
conrso "Liberty'? would want to publish a
rejoin ler, and WQ could not refuse with any
desrreo of fairness And thus the columns
of the Democrat would become filled with

It is also a bad sign to see a gate "ever

go that people who have occasion to pass
that way of a'dark night must either step as

high as a blind horse, to avoid it, or jam up
against it, regardless ol consequences.
There ii one of three things should be done
by the city authorities, viz : Either compel
that man to keep his gate shut, or erect a
small light-house on the gate-post, or employ
a "cheap boy" to stand there at night and
'yell "bloody shins" when a wayfarer comes
near the gate.
Veet NircnTr. Just now there is some
Jittle eparring being perpetrated between
Dow, of the "Umatilla Press,7 and Brown,
if the "Oregon Herald.' The furmer pays
that "party conspiracies" have "played

of the latter ; and the aforesaid Herald edit

'gon charges the Press editor with a marked
resemblance to Don Qaixote, in that he pos
sesses "a like chivalrous spirit and imprac
ticable energy," and a "vigor as littje tem
pered by the cowardly quality of discretion."
Now this is all very wrong ; it is very
naughty- We hope they will behave better
hereafter. They should fight the common
enemy not each, other. Their hands were
not niade to tear each other's ejes in this
manner,
