TATE RIGHTS DEMOCRAT. ;! Honey SXarkct. : San Francisco Legal Tender rates .MJ1(ST2 J$tfk York ft li QuoUUon.............V.........-14r "PorcLA Follies." We publish in an other colqraan Address, with this title, delivered bo'orQ tb Lmn County Teachers' Institute, at Scio, Jast December In the main we agree with the Lecturer in hisTarioushitsat the Popular Follies of the da j. They are richly deserved. But we disagree wl en he classes a good musicial education among them ; and particularly where he aims his shafts at the popular pref erence for the Piano as the best of musicial instruments. We agree with him when he assumes that "every girl cannot become a musician," tudtat'llamusipiaa w born not made.1' Wo think, too, that every young woman, no matter vnat ner tsto or music may be, nor how much it may have Deen cultivated, should regard ordinary domestic duties u far abe, and beyond 'all musical ability and talent. We know that "music ath. charms to soothe a savage," but a good cup of coffee, a nice, well-raised, brown-baked loaf of bread, a plate of sweet butter, well cooked meats, and rich gravies, are equally potent in soothing a man when hungry; particularly when prepared by a beloved and loving wife. 3usic is good, but it is a luxury which can be dispensed with ; while a well- cooked meal is very acceptable, and indeed indispensable, to a well person at least twice a day. Every young woman s pouia first be come a prcfigeqt in the, arts of housewifery. If. to these i.he can add that of music, so much the better. We presume on these points we agree. But the fact is th,at the piano is aim st universally a favorite with ha people, an 1 it cannot with any propriety be classed among the Popular Follies of the day. The piano is not a humbug. Its great pop ularity is based on substantial, inherent merit. The tones of a good 7-octave piano are rich and sweet, and of great compass; and when its kevs are touched by a skillful hand accompanied by a sweet and melo dious roice--we seldom hear better music than it can prodace. J humbug i short lived. A gen nine humbug never lives many years. People, are quick to discover merit nd equally rvift to detect the want of it in anything put forward for their approval or condemnation. The piano has cow been a candidate for popular favor for more than half a century j and instead of being pro soonced a humbug, or, "Popular Folly," it js growing in popular favor every day. Were its claims unsound, it would be rejec ted and condemned, not only for this reason, but because of its costliness. A Nice Ci inc. short time ago the Lafayette fJqurier substantially charged that the Editor of the State Rights Democrat does pat understand, and as a sequence does not know how, properly, to employ the English januage. This may be true j we will leave it to the public to decide. On the 8th instant this same able critic wrote and published the following lucid paragraph, which we print precisely as it appears in the Courier ; "To 'den j the right of Congresj to Jo jrthiug is quite an ex? undertaking, bat to get thl body ij heod or reebect yr pctt tb tUag X together. The to judges 'of the qualifications of members carries with ilstlf tie rigbfc to Jjudge members disqualified,' Con trolls as that bodv t. jjV unserupuluCi and imbccie fanatics and perj ur ea traitors, who wijl undertake & circumscribe the bounds of its urrrpations, or'' what' 'oastitnenej' may not suchlj ongreis 'disfranchise V Is it sot probable that, ujdejf'ucji a eon;truetion of its pre rogatives in this' behalf as Uerali accords it?" Yea very probable, indeed I Nothing could be more conclusive ! It is as clear as mud nearly ! Seriously the editor of the Courier is an illiterate, self-conceited, overgrown, maud in nincompoop. Such men are a disgrace x journalism and a dead-weight to any party. PoLoaxn Child aix.-The "Unionist" etatea thajifour hundred dollars have been contributed by the citizens of Salem to estab lish a school for the colored children of that city. A county that is so intensely black a Marion shoe Id tend the colored children to the public schools, if they would be con sistent, "yhite spirits and black, blue spirits an$ grey," ought to mingle and mix together j and this feat they will ultimately perform. The tendency of abolition teach ing and abolition principles is to social as well as political equality ; and, the whole thing will end up in this in Oregon, as well as in Massachusetts, ipless checkcated by he conserraturas of the country. The Lyceum. The question for debate next Monday evening is : f 'Ought capital punishment to he abolished?" Affirmative Jit. Tate, Markham, Brown, Morgan,-Dr. Bice, and Pearce. Negative LTarvey Smith. Hannon, Sjlyeuter, Dr. Lister, J. Foster anjl Watson. The last question discussed was decided in fhe affirmatTve, Those, who wish to migrate pa Mexico can do so xxow vith a certaintj that ere thej arrive there it VJll fa jjipxi greasers and all, to the United States. m m t THI TTZATHEI AKD IHERlVK. Within a few dajs past large quantities of rain have fallen in the Willamette Valley, causing ex. ceedinglj muddy rads and raiding the Cali pooja, Santiani and Willamette rivera so hat thej have overflovrn their banks in manj places. The "Willamette as vre write (Janu ary 23,) is falling a little. The weather, thongh not freezing, is colder than usual. The hills, butte i, and mountains, in the dis tance are covered with snow. Dxowxed. Itaindrs have reached Albany that a Mrs. Vaughn formerly Mrs. Briggs living near the Calipooya bridge -who re cently resided at Orleans, opposite Corvallis, was drowned on the 21st instant. WJL K.DO IIERTY'S Medical and Surgical Institute is be coming a sine qua non to the welfare. of oar State and health of our citizens; and his rapidly spread ing reputation, although it may excite surprise, is but tire signal or skill, and follows as the natural effect of such a cause. We are personal! r acquaint ed with gentlemen who have suffered for years un der enroale disease, and who bad taken, ad van t ajs ht every available means that promised relief, but without success, until they called upon Dr. Doherty, who, in an i&eredibly sL'orf space of time has given them entire relief. It is gratifying to announce this fact, because the Doctor is a gen tleman who seeks, not by defamation of others, to establish bis reputation, or to rear the superstruc ture of his own upon the ruin of an another's fame. The Doctor conducts his Institute in such a man ner that must be gratifying to all his, patients. lie examines, 'advises and recommends without charge, and the patient; after 'hearing his ferms for treatment, can accept or reject at pleaiire, In no ease does the Doctor biake a charge unless he effects a cure. This he is' able to do, because he feels the confidence which long experience has giv en, and no doubt the consolation which appertains to that confidence. Persons afflicted with either accute or chronic diseases, would do well to con sult him. For consultation he asks no fee, nor does be insist onr obedience to bis advice unless the patient place himself nnder his care.
