STATE RIGHTS DEMOCRAT. San Francisft Legal Tender rates....;.....71?2 New York G'iM Violations...... ......147 tclgglou Notice. . Tbo RcrL J. "B. Short, of Corvallis, will preach in the Court' II onse, next Sabbath (Jan. 20th), commencing at 11 o'clock, a. M. Ax Imtoster. The last Corvallis (Jaictte contains a quite lengthy account of ua man and a woman, each bearing a satchel," who entered his sanctum a week ago last Wednes day. The Gazette says the mau "represent ed himself as a IotC6tant Episcopal Mis: Bionary,' from Mexico, giving his address as Kev. Dr. B. C. Rowland, Corresponding Ed itor "of tho Christian Herald." ' Tho "Rer. Dr, E. G. Rowland,'' is un qucstionaUy a great liar and humbug. He lied when he said we advjsed him to jo to Mr. Carter. Tho truth is wo did not gee him at all ; but ho sent his wife to' us with a letter from himself, in i which he stated that he was destitute, that he was a printer, and had been an editor of a French paper in New Orleans ; and that money and old clothes would be very acceptable. "We told the wo man, who passed for his wife, that we want ed all our old "duds" oursclf ; and, as for money, we had none to spare. If she. had known editors as well as we do, she would not have applied to us, for who ever saw an editor that had a surplus of cash? But for Eome reasoc she did not secnj inclined to leave. Gov. Gibbs happened at that time to be in our sanctum, and it may bo that he saw something particularly attractive about him. At last, in order to get rid of her, we prevailed on our partner, Brown, to contrib ute fifty cents ; we aJded another half dollar to it and handed it to her, and bid her good bye, with a briny tear in our eye. We pre sume the "email Frenchman" lied wheu he aid he had spent a couple of weeks with Dr. Wythe, and several days with Rev. J. F. Damon, and we know he lu4 when ho said his wife came across the plains last sea son. All the pa'pers in Southern Oregon ought to give him a kick as he passes. The Ltcicx. After a quite spirited de bate the question, viz : "Tliat Mexico ought to belong to and for in a part of Vie UniUd Slates" was decided in the aSruiative. Next Monday evening the samequestin will again be discussed. The disputants are': Affirmalu e :Messrs. Hannan, Rice, Hi Smith, Juhn Foster, T. Morgan, S. S. Mark ham aad Sylvester. Seyalicc Messrs. Flinn, Tate, Lister, Brown, Pearce, A. Hill, and Cundiff. We can assure our citizens that it will pay to attend these debates. Questions of great moment are settled there without any trou tle. For example : Last Monday one of the orators a successful disciple of Esculapius, Hippocrates, &.c. wanted Mexico to enable liini to settle forever the negro question. He would colonize the nigger in Mexico ; and have one vast country of greasers, Indians and niggers. We trust Congress will take this plan under advisement. Let a commit tee of thirteen be appointed and see what they think cf it, and report. "Tax-Pavee." We give room to a com munication signed "jay-Payer." The wri ter comes at us very fiercely, with his bris tles up, and seems to assume that we wrote something about taxes a short time ago, which said something he thinks was more heterodox than orthodox. We insert it be cause we liko freedom of speech oarself, and want others to enjoy the same ineetimaLla blessing. But we did not write the article to which "Tax-Payer" alludes ; nor did we endorse it. We inserted it as the views of a - - another editor upon the points discussed, and are content to let them go for what they are worth. Thieves Aboct. We have been informed iy a neighbor that recently several articles of clothing were taken from the clothes-line, after dark, by some of the light-fingered gentry ; and that other families have suffer ed in like manner. It would be well for each head of a family to be watchful, and if any thief be caught in the act, treat him to a dose of buck shot. A "little blood-let-ting" in such cae will do much good. Closed Oct. The old "Eagle Hotel," the-Sheriff informs us, was closed up last Monday night. He fells us that the 'Ster coeopticon." was good, but that the show at the Eagle, while he was closing it out, beat JWormer's Stereoscnpticon all hollow. It isn't everyone that can keep hotel. - New Columbian'. We know from actual experience that this hotel P. B. Sinnott, proprietor has a good run of custom, and is worthy of the patronage it receives. Sin nott knows how to keep hotel. Likcolst House. A friend writes us from Portland that this house is becoming the most popular resort or travelers in that city, since the new proprietor, X. C Slatthiessen, has taken chiirge of it. Last wek oar friend Marx seemed to be quite blithe and gay, and unconcerned about the future ; none of his friends dreamed that he contemplated so rash an act so soon.
