examination of the pupils of the District
School of Albany, 'on next Friday. The
patrons of thft school and the, public ro ini

general fact, not enough interested in such
matters. They pay money freely for tui
tion, for the building of school-houses, and
for boots for their children ; but beyond this

which it is sacrilege for them to enter. This
is all wrong. They should aid the teacher

table way, that is, if he is a good one ; and
if he is no, the sooner hes is discharged the.

The Lyceum. According to previous an
pouncement, a meeting yas held in the Al
bany school-house last Thursday evening,
and preliminary steps were takti relative to
the proposed Albany Lyceum. A commit

at the school-house, next Thursday evening,
at half past six o'clock. A question for dis
cussion, viz:. ' Resolved. That man's

Ladies' Pair. A Fair will be given by

OBITUARY.
Ma. Natqax Smith, the subject of this notice,
was 87 years of age. lie was born in South Car
olina; came to Missouri, remained there till 1847,
and then ren.oved to Oregon. He professed relig
ion and united with the Baptist Church when a
young man, and though subjected to many hard
tnajj and privations as a pioneer in anew country,
be still regarded the services of God and religious
prmleges and duties as his richest boon. Through
a long, eventful and useful life, his trust was in
Lto4 as nis retuge and strength and a present help
ia time of trouble. lie was' punctual in family
worship, and after the circle was broken up by the
death of his companion, he still regularjy brought
his children around' the family altar, to invoke
Heaven's blessings and to teach them, to lire for
immortality. As a citizen, those who knew him
jjjst respected him most. As a Christian, he had
the fullest confidence and love of his brethren.
The Baptist Church at French Prairie and the
Central Association have lost a beloved member,
aid the family of the departed father feel that a
venerated column has been broken. He expressed
himself to be at peace with God and with all man
kind ; and in anticipation of his departure selected
a hymn which he requested bis friends to jjing at
jiis grave.

presence of the Savior to pass with him through

a glorious immortality, he passed from earth to rest
