STATE RIGHTS DEMOCRAT. CITY, COUNTY AND STATE. Money Market San Frnctsco L Tender rates New York Gld Quotation!" ,..71o72 ..149 Gone. The Fair ts gone ; the pig show is gone ; the circus is gone; the balhxm ascen sion is gone (we thought it never would go); the steam swing is pne ; the wheelbarrow panorama is gone ; the grind organ is gono ; the peanut stand are gone, and the greater part of the ready cah we had on hand lcfore the Fair is gone. The Fair went home, the amusements to Salem, and our money up the flume so to speak. Our stock didn't hike premiums at the Fair, much : our short horned hogs were not so prominent as some others on exhibition ; our Spanish Merino cattle had lecomo too much Auiericanixed ; our thorough-bred vegetables were too much graded ; our Arabian sheep were not enough on the "fleece" ; our Berkshire horses hap pened to be too much Cayue ; our imported fruit Favored too strong of Wcbfoot, and our preserves, jellies and wines wouldn't go round with the awarding committee (in fact, we thought at one time we would bo in luck if we flared our plates and bottle, and we noticed after the committee had finished test ing the qualities of one cake there wasn't enough of it left to tie the premium ribbon to). In the races our horse was too modest didn't like to put himself forward and as there was no premium offered for mod esty, and the other horse coming out ahead, the judges decided against u. A man won 2 J from us in this race, but as we didn't put up the money, and only bet on honor, we didn't lose anything. In the mechanical de partment, we noticed the "Frec lmen's Bu reau," in which work the ebony and ivory showed to advantage. There were a few calves on exhibition at the swing which we noticed had generally taken second pre mium, having red ribbon tied onto them. In the pavillion we noticed "lovely women and brave men," and squalling laities the latter attracting the most attention. Al though there irai no poultry on exhibition. tnere were several "tout races ana some '.'flying the track." In the grain line there were some signs of rye whisky and sev eral individuals were pretty well "corned." The specimens of painting most noticeable were on the face of some of the youn? la dies, and the drawing were eenerally done by the doorkeepers of th shows from the pockets of the people except where an oc casional cork was drawn from a whisky bot tle. We didn't observe much honey, but there was any amount of candy in circula tion, especially at the swing, where every thing was on the rise. Balloon Ascension. During the Fair held here last week Albany was b!esed with amusements. We had fireworks, the Circus the soul of which is Harry Jackson and the learned pig. This pig is a curiosity. He is about half Berkshire, and we hai rather see him perform than all the other shows in the shape of fire-works and circuses in the land. He knows more, and can expre- him eelf mure intelligently and behaves himself better than any other "grunter" we ever saw. By looking at a watch he can tell the time of day. He can play cards better thau most amateur players. He tells how many days there are in a year. He avers he never drinks liquor ; and the only objection we can urge against him is that he says he voted for Lincoln. But this is a slight digression. We started out to say something about a bal loon ascension. On last Saturday, late in the afternoon, Prof. Vincent, the manager, succeeded, after two or three ineffectual at tempts, in inflating his large balloon, when it was cut loose and ascended about a half mile, and finally came down within a quar ter of a mile of Albany. Before it began ascending, Prof. Buisley, a very powerfully built and daring little Frenchman, took his seat upon a traper bar, which was suspended by ropes several feet below the balloon, and immediately commenced a s-rresof extraor dinary feats, such as hanging by his feet, head downwards, his arms folded across his breast ; hanging by one arm ; lying on his back crosswise of the bar ; hanging to the bar by the back of his neck, and performing sundry other feats equally daring and won derful The whole thing here was a splen did success, and gave entire satisfaction to all who witnessed it. We cannot, however, speak very flatteringly of "Prof." Vincent. He left Albany owing a balance to his land lord, and be utterly eschewed every civility to the entire press fraternity, df course he has a right to do as he pleases relative to this matter ; but if he pursue3 this course every where, and succeeds, he may be reckoned as one of the world's wonders. Go There ! Go where? Why, to A. S. Kightlinger's grocery and variety store. "What for? For anything you want, of course. He keeps tons of groceries and myriads of Yankee notions and toys to please the children such as wooden nut megs, traveling snuff-boxes, portable distil leries, pocket sawmills, eross-ejed spectacles fjr blind spiders, etc., etc., &c.f &c. Call and ses that prince of good fellows, Mr. K., "flax around," raise a small whirlwind by hia celerity in filling orders and raking down the cash, and if you don't come away satis fied that you've "struck" the place to deal, then call us a li-kely young man. Never too Late, &c. We last week omitted to return thanks to our friend Mar shall, proprietor of one of the livery stables in our city, for free rides to and from the Fair Frounds. Mr. Marshall keeps a tip top livery stable, and knows how .to ingrati ate himself into the good graces of even the devil (he let ours ride free all last week). , Phtsiciax axd Surgeon. We direct the attention of our readers to the professional card of Dr. D. B. Rice, in this week's pa per, aid assure all those who need the ser vices &T a physician that they will find in him a reao:yf accommodating and skillful person, and one whose charges are reasona- Die. . Personal. We this week had a call from Mr. Frank Stuart, of the Jacksonville Ke porter. He reports that "everything is love ly" for the Democracy of Southern Oregon. Newspaper Changes. We notico that Mr. O'Meara, former editor and publisher of this paper, has recently taken charge of the editorial department of tho Idaho World. Also, that Mr. Noltner has associ ate! with him in tho publication of tho He view Mr. Beers, and has employed Mr. Hus ton as editor. Rain. On Thursday and yesterday we had several lively little showers, and at the hour of going to pross it looks as though there was "more coming." Well, it is great ly needed in the surrounding country at this time. Immigrants. Two families of immigrants arrived from "old Missouri" yesterday. They aro just in time to get in out of the wet. Wanted. We will tuko a few cords of wood in payment of subscription to tho Dem ocrat, if delivered soon at this office. Thanks. Our thanks are duo Represen tative Moore, of this county, for official doc uments. Tiik Health of Mr. Davis. Ap proaching Old l'oint Comfort, says a cor respondent of tho Memphis Bulletin, I could not help of thinking of the proud heart beating there within tho.e walls like a caged eagle, and I knew, too, from information entirely reliable, that his health was not what it had been represented and that his life was gradually but surely oozing away. Mark my prediction ! The only trial Mr. Davis will ever have will be at i he bar of Eternal Justice. Ho will never live to bo tried by an earthly trib unal. He is further on the road to the grave than the outside world has any idea of ; and, ere long, the telegraph will announce to the press the sufferings of Jeffersoti Davis are at an end, and he will be better off. It is said that a discrepancy of thirty million dollars has lately been discovered in Judge Chase's a coouuts while Secretary of the Treasury.
