STATE RIGHTS DEMOCR AT. CITY, COUNTY AND STATE. "When tiiey Convene. The Legis-j ' lature meets the second Monday in September. The Supreme Court of the Stato also sits at Salem o the first Monday in September. " Wiiat a Rush ! "Wo. direct the attention of oar readers to the advertisement of ortownsman. It. Chcadle. Ilis stock of goods though not the largest, has been selected Tcry judiciously, and is well suited to this market, not nly as regards quality but price. Law Firm. Messrs. Cranor & Helm, attorneys at law, it is almost superfluous for us to ay. stand in the foremost rank of their profession in Linn and adjoining counties. The junior of the firm is a member elect to the lower houso of the Legislature. Arrived. Last Monday fivo immi grant teams with a corresponding number of fam--ilies. arrive 1 in our town. They were from Ohio and Illinois, and report large trains still coming behind. They crossed the Cascade Mountain. which eonsamed four days. Wo learn that a part of them are going to Starr's Point. Beuton county. Fire at Vancouver. A fire broke oat last Thursday morning at Vancouver, W. T., destroying eight buildings before the fury of tho flamea were spent. The loss is estimated at $14. 000. Na insurance. The town would have been a complete mass of ruins had it not been for the almost superhuman exertions put forth by the toldiery of the garrison. "Fire in the Mountains tleman who was in town yesterday informs us that on last Tuesday the timber in the Cascade Moua tains, directly east of this city, was on fire for a -distance of seTeral miles. During the whole of that day the atmosphere in this vicinity presented hazy, heavy and gloomy aspect, and various speculations were rifo as to the cause, until tho gentleman above-named related the circumstance of the "fire in the mountain. Bargains. Mr. L. Stembach is de sirous of closing out his stock of dry good.", cloth ing, etc., aad therefore announces through tie col umns of the Democrat that he offers superior in ducement to purchasers. He has an assorted quantity of excellent good., which ho will dispose of at mnprecedented bargains, and we are satis fiVd that the public will find it to their advantage to give him a call. We are under obligations to his gentlemanly salesman, Mr. Marks, for late num bers of the Mobile Register. Guardian's Sale. We desire to di rect the attention of our reader to the advertise ment in another column for the sale of some vslu ablo real-property, by Judge Powe'.l, who can be fouad at his office ready at any time t givo infor mation in regard to the same. The land is situ ated just across the Callipwia from Albany, i cov ered with a growth of heavy timber, und is sur veyed off and divided into tjwn lots. It n truly a desirable piece of property, and the purchaser will undoubtedly find it a profitable investment. Runaway. Tuesday night tat. as the stage wa about starting South, and the driver was busily engaged strapping the barrga.ze on th; boot." the h rs , 1-cconiiig f.-izbt'-'red. started oJ on a keen run a':g t'.e road to C'-rvall:?. crossing the Caliipojia bridge, and on ut a s"nrt distance beyond, where they "brought up' aga'n-t j a tree. The paenger?. twr men. were on board one on the driver's box and thi oth?r inside the csach neither of whom was injured ; nor were the horses or coach damaged. Books and Stationkry. S. J. Mc t Cormiek. t f Portland (wh . in Orenn, d jes not know hint?) is the pijnavr bo-keIler and pub!i.h r ia thU State, and country tacrrhants would do well to g'ut him a call when wanting anything in his line. We notice that he wants to buy " all the ras in Oregon," (call on u, Mac.) and that he will pay one cent a pnnd more than "any other man." We adrise all the gKd housewives Lrrea "bouts to eare np their ra js and send them to Mc Cormiek. A paper mill is in process of erection At the Falls, and rags will be in brisk demand. H-adhia "ad." Dentistry. It will be seen by refer- erenee to his card that Dr. G. W. Gray is still at tending to all kinds of work in the line of his pro fession. The public would do well to patronize ti3 gentleman, who is ever mindful of the respon sibility and eare attending his vocation, and spares no '"pains' on the part of himself to alleviate the "pains" of his patients. There U also no need of persons longer "gumming it," when tLey can lav a er set of "grind'trs" t each reasonable rates. Head his adTertlsement in ur paper, and do not fail to gire him a call, if you want a tooth plugged or "yanked out" with the utmost ease And adroitness. Scientific Exploration of Mount Hood. Weaee by a letter from Prof. Wood in a lata Herali that he, with a party of seven others, has made a scientific exploration of Mount Ifood. It stands unrivalled among the mountains of North America. Its height us 17,640 feet above the Uvl of the sea. The mass of the mountain is vole an He lava and ashes. There is a crater yet open and constantly emitting sulphurous vapor. Glaziers Are there also, as on Mount Blanc, composed of lear blue ice, gradually sliding down the awful ravines. The Flora is exceedingly interesting, 'being almost purely alpine. More than thirty -pecies, peculiar to the mountains, were gathered, xnasy of which are new to the science. The Albany Foundry. Among the mast prominent features in evidence of the prosperity of car town is the success of the Foun dry and Machine shop, owned and conducted by Mr. Cherry, who Is, perhaps, one -of the most thor ough machinists on the coast. This institution nas been established but a short time, and yet it Already enjoys a patronage far greater than even the most sanguine expectations of its enterprising - projector. It furnlsiies constant employment for six or seven hands, and turns outwork of superior mould an ! finieh. The manager is contemplating an early visit Co San Francisco, for the purpose of adding more machinery to the works, and estab lishing the institution upon a still larger basis of toperation. Baad the advertisement in another column. TurniTure. G. Mealy & Co. an nounce through our columns this week that they tire just receiving a large and varied assortment of fine and substantial furniture. These gentlemen Are well known ixt the community, having been established in business in this city for several years past j and anything that we could say in their favor Would simply be superfluous, as their business transactions and social relations in that time have been such as to elicit respect and confi dence from alL Their furniture is of the beet ma terial and most substantial make, and theif facili ties for manufacturing it are such that they can -afford to.iell on very reasonable termsj They alio jiavethe agency for the -celebrated "Economy Washing Machine,'' an article which Mrs. Toodles thinks is "$o handy to have in the oouse' It Is designed to save a wife many an hour's toil arid fatigue, and avert from a husband many a growl and "curtain lecture."
