STAE KimiTS DEMOCRAT.
A SHARK STORY;
- u Good gracious, what's that?" thu
last exclamation of mine was eausuil ly
ray noticing that something icry lart:f
and very dark was immediately below me
in the water, possessing a movement just
perceptUile by the phosphoric ripple
"It's a horrid great er-ouml shark," said
my companion, with a shudder, "look at
his fin." There, sure euongh, was his
tin, just rising above the water at that
moment, and then his whole hideous out
line was made out out elearlv, the im
mense head, pointed nose, and large pec
toral fins. -Ugh! what a brute!" was
my exclamation, followed up by thj ap
ropos reflection, "and we have beeu bath
ing here, too." Let's have the shark
hook up,"Wid my friend, "and we may
catch him-ff We accordingly had it up,
and duly baited,' ready for putting over.
But we-had passed the word' down to the
gunroom and berths oi'what had happened,
and th$ sending for the shark-hook was
enoughwahung to VucK of the blue jack
ets as had" not gone, to bed, so that we
soon had a goodly muster both of meu
and officers abaft ready to take part in
whatever sport might hi forward. I am
ure I ani not exaggerating when I say
the line had not been over five minutes
before first a rubbing, then a slight drag,
and finally a determined pull was given it.
"We ' immediately hauled in ; whatever
there" was on it was heavy, but not ac
tive However,- the accustomed bowline
wus prepared: and the hauliug part rove
through a sheave in the end of the spanker-fedora,
1 should premise that this boom
was. frora Kwelve to fourteen feet above
the, water. ? Long before the hook could
have reached tlie surface we saw &rrr felt
thaVwe had hooked an enormous ground
shart, for he lore fiercely at the line,
turned his white belly up, and lashed his
monstrous tail with vigorous sweeps from
side to side. Our excitement was tre
mendous, for he was certainly the largest
brute any of us had ever seen, and when
we got his head above water he regularly
shook the brig' by his struggles, llowev-
er, rtt spite of our excitement, we managed
to git the bowline over his shoulders, and
had jvit got some hands on to haul it
tight, when with a frightful plunge, the
brute tore himself -away from the bait,
and left it hanging bloody and mangled
behind him.. "Ceufound him, he's off,"
wa.th disappointed exclamation of the
bystanders. Not a bit of it," cried the
party who were attending the bowline,
which was seen slipping through their
hands in spite of their efforts. We all
" clapped ou to the bowline immediately,
and were soon rewarded by seeing the
monster helplessly dragged out of the wa
ter, 'tail first, for the bowline had slipped
down over his body, and had s nipped"
elosejtQhis tail, so that he was prevented
from '.struggling in the least, and came up
like a. dad-carcass. We hoisted him
close ip a'n J when We had xlone so, his
tail was well above the boom, while his
head and. shoulders were quite covered by
water - The noise of the eapture had bscn
so great, that we had nearly one in the
suiir around "us, and many and various
were the remarks- passed on the horrible
looking brute suspended from the boom
enfJ.& At length a bright thought seemed
to strike tis all simultaneously. u Let ns
.put the bait over again, there may be
more. JSo sooner said than done ; ana
almost no sooner done than a repetition cf
erery detail of the previous capture was
repeated, and 7 another - monster, equally
lar:ef3quallfoul smelling, and equally
hideous, hung head downward beside the
last. il Why, the place must be alive
with them," was tithcr the thought or
exclaisatiort kt every one present. .The
surgeon was looking out toward the glit
terto,th's moon on the waicr, when some
thing ' seemed to have caught his eye.
"iWhatjtre you looking at, doctor?" 1

The following incident in the life of the
Chevalier Bayard tho pride of French
chivalry,, and the knight without fear and
without reproach is takeutVoin Sketches
of Venetian Iljstory, form lug a part of
Murray's family Library; but the original
is found in fouud in the memoirs of the
Chevalier by his secretary. Jn 1512.
Brescia, a flourishing town in the .North
of Italy, and at that timfc belonged to the
Venetian territory, was takeu, after a
bloody resistance, by the Freneti uudcr
Gaston do Foix. Jayard, in leading on
the troops to the assault, received a very
severe wound iu tho thigh, by a pike.
Alter tlie capture ot the city, the narra
tive thus proceeds :
Bayard, meantime, was placed upon a
door: torn frotit its '.hinges, and carried to
the best looking houseat hand. I ts owner,
was a rich gentleman who had sought
asyluiu in a neighboring monastery; and
his lady and two daughters, young ladios
of extraordinary beaiity, had concealed
themselves beneath sume straw in a giau
iry under the protection of our Lrd."
The. mother, when she heard the lack
ing at the wicket, opened it, 4i asawait
ing the rnerey of "God with constancy;"
and Bayard, notwithstanding his own
great pain observing her piteeus agony,
inconthifutly placed sei-tincls at the gate,
and ordered them to prohibit all entrance;
well knowing that his name was a watch
word of j8PSfease. He -then assured the
uoble dame of protection, inquired into
her condition and dispatching some arch
ers for her husband's relief, received hihv
courteously, and entreated him, to believe
he lodged none other than a friend. His
wound eoufined him for five weeks, nor
was it closed,. when he remounted his
horse and rejoined his comrades.
Before his departure, the lady of the
housestill considering herself and fami
ly as 'prisoners, and her mansion and
whole property as the lawful property of
her' guest, vet perceiving his gentleuess
of demeanor thought to prevail on him
to compound ior a moderate ransom ; and,
having placed two thousand .five-hundred
lucats m a basket, she besought h:s ac
ceptance ot it on .her knees. Uayaru
raised her at the moment, asked her the
sum, and scaieu ner oesiae nimseii. tie
then assured her that" had she presented
him with three hundred thousand crowus,
they Would not gratify him so much as
tho good cheer which he had tasted under
her roof; and he requested permission to
bid adieu to her daughters. " The dam
sels," says the chronicler, were fair, vir
tuous, and well-trained, and had afforded
much pastime to the chevalier during his
iliness, by their choice singing, playing
on the lute and spin act, and their much
cunning needlework.
When they cutered the chamber, they
thanked him with deep gratitude, as the
guardian of .their honor; and the good
knight, almost weeping at their geutleiiSss
and humility, answered, il Fair maidens
you are doing that which is rather my
part to do -to thank you for the good
company which 3-ou have afforded me.
and , for which I am greatly bound
and obiisred to vou. You know that we
knight adventurers are ill provided with
goodly toys for ladies' eyes, and for im
part, I am sorely grieved not to be better
furnished, in order that I might offer vou
some love token, as is veuf due. Jiut
your lady mother here has given me two
thousand five hundred ducats, which lav
on that table, and I present each of you
1 with oue thousand as an aid in your mar
riage portions; ijr my recompense I ask
no more than that you will be pleased' to
pray God fcr my welfare." Then turning
to the lady of the house,'- he continued,
" These remaining five hundred ducats I
taka, madam, to mv own use, and I request
you to distribute tiicin among the poor
nuns who nave teen pillaged, and whose
necessities no one can better know than
yourself, and herewith I take my leave."
After having dined, as he quitted his
eWniber to take horse, the two fair dam
sels met him, each beariug A little offer
ing which they had worked during his
confinement, yt&ic consisted of two rich
bracelets, woven with marvelous delicacy
from her own beauteous hair and fine
gold and 1 silver threads ; theyOthcr was
a crimson stin purse, embroidered with
much subtility. Greatly did the brave
knight thank them for this last courtesy,
saying that such presents from go lovely
hands were worth ten thousand crowns;
then gallantly fastening tho bracelet on
his arm and the purse on his deeves, he
vowed to wear them both for the honor
of their fair donors, while his life endured
and so he mounted and rode on.
