The Charter election in this city last
Monday was tho occasion for great activ
ity on the part of both contending par
ties, l'arly in tho day the Abolitionists
felt finite sure that nn easy victory would
be won by thorn, but aa tho day advanced
fear and despair took the place of the
morning's hope and belief. The party
lines wore as rigidly drawn in the elec
tion as at a Presidential coutest, aud
greater activity on tho side of the Aboli
tionists could not have beeu exhibited.
They voted every body their party num
bered, present iu tho place j they coaxed,
wheedled, threatened. bullied, and almost
coerced voters to their ticket. Their
two Judges of Klectiou admitted every
doubtful Abolition vote, and rejected
every possible Democratic vote. An
yet they beat the Democratic ticket onlj
