A MHG1IT .FUTUHE. I The outlook for Oregon and the whole North Pacific was never brighter than at present ; and In tlie coming general pros perity, Albany and IJnn county will share most gett-ronsly. We are not permitted at this time to go into details, but we may say and we say it on the best ot authority that tlie coming two years will witness the expenditure of more money on this coast in inaugurating and completing grand T internal improvements, than has ever been expended in the United States in any two previous years in her history. Giant corporations, possessed ot iniilions- upon millions of wealth, each striving to be first in the race, will extend long lines of railways over this State and adjacent Territories, just as rapidly as money will accomplish it. Parties of , surveyors have been running tines in every portion ot the country where the indications ive any evidence that railroads will prove a good investment in the near future. - Among others, three Hues have been sur veyed from this city to Iebanon, and a profile map of the line with all the neces sary information, made and filed away for use when wanted. If tlie citizens along the line oi this road Immediately interested desire its conti uctlon, a little exertion on their, part' will secure it- If those inter ested show 'tlie necessary interest in the matter, tlie read will be completed next season In tlie most permanent manner, with new steel rails, and tolling stock nec essary for tlie equipment of a first class railway. The same may be said of Brownsville. But the terminus of tlie road will not long remaiu at Lebanon it will soon be extended further. : " :'" .-r ' We liave but little doubt ot tlie com pletion of the Corvallis and Yaquiiia road, when a road from this city; to Corvallis will be an absolute necessity. With tlie completion of Jay Gould's road to the Dalles and this we are prom ised tlie coming fall a rush of emigration will set in for Oregon and adjacent Terri tories tlie like of Which has never been witnessed ; and with this flow of people will come capital with which to open up our fair valleys, inaugurate new enter prises, and more fully develop the varied resources of this coast. Every indication indeed points to prosperous times for Oregon In tlie coming years. Times may be a litt'e binding now, and money hard to get, bnt with the opening of Spring there will be au immediate change tor the better. Jet everybody take fresh courage and push right along. - An opinion seems to prevail in the East that tlte Sandwich Islands will gradually pass Into the hands of the Chinese, by reason of the decline of their r native pop ulation ami the steady Increase of Mon golian Immigration. This opinion also anticipates the supplanting ot tlie present Government of those islands by one of Chinese origin. King Kalakaua has made numerous efforts to encourage Portuguese immigration, but unless he makes more energetic endeavors to guard the future of his kingdom ; than be has yet done," bit throne will eventually rest upon a very doubtful foundation. When tlie Chmeso outnumber every other race on the islands they will yery naturally seek to Install rulers from their own country. The situation of the English In Afghan istan is critical. .Winter has set in with severity, the eomnisarial is disorganized, the natives are active and hostile. Then there has been fighting, and tlie result of the British victories U that their forces are confined to Cabulythe Shirpnr cantonment and Jeialabad. Tlie Commission treating with the Utes certainly evidence commendable patience and perseverance. The money will come to America. Tlie World m ttse Maine Come. The New York TTorM'of December lGth has the following -editorial : Governor Garcelon and his advisers Imve made a serious political, and not less serious moral, mistake. They have expressed at the last election, oh account of technical errors and oversights. These errors and oversights were committed, not by electors. but by local canvassers. The votes were" In fact thrown out on account ot Informal ity in the manner In which they were returned. There Is no pretense that this informality was such as to leave the in tention of voters In doubt. The tenor of all statutes, judicial decisions and treatises which deal with elections is, that every presumption should be made in favor of giving effect to tlie real intention of tlie voters.,- The canvassers in Maine have un questionably nullified tlie real intention of voters. There is no dodging that fact, and with a fair minded people that tact Will be decisive of any controversy that may be raised. It is plain that defeated legislators that have been thus counted in ought to refuse to serve, and leave the organization of the legislature to the reput 1 Scans who were elected to It. Only In that way can they remove from tlie democratic-greenback party of Maine tSie share of disgrace which already belongs to the republican party of the nation. The republicans should be permitted to enjoy a monopoly of tba practices of Madison weusana ins colleagues ir democrats are to keep advantage of. the position which John Sherman and the two Cliaudlers and S tough ton have secured to them, - A dispatch from Paris describes the once beautiful Empress Eugenie as " gray and pale as marble.:Within a few years her misfortunes base been remarkable.
