LOCAL MATTERS."
FROM BROWNSVILLE.
- Brownsville, June 20, 1877.
Ed. Register: On yesterday, tbe 19th,
tbe Masonic fraternity of this place held, a
grand picnic In a beautiful grove near town,
the principal feature of which, aside from
the good things prepared by the ladies, was
an address by tbe Rev. I. D. Driver on the
Symbolism of Masonry." This was in
deed a treat worth many miles of travel to
bear ; and many who came, strongly prej
udiced against Masonry, went away per
fectly satisfied that it was a good institution,
and sorry that they were not members of
tbe "mystic order." ; . -
We noticed many persons present trorn
a distance, among tnem tbe Hon. J. K,
weathertord and his 'bonnie" bride. ' Mr.
Weatberford wins golden opinions wherev-
erhergoes, and .his winsome lady, with her
gfcntle ways and, charming manners, will
i to him, tn deed and In truth, a helpmeet
in Tbia.. respect He will never call for
friendship in this section without meeting
with a hearty response; indeed be Is a man
whom Republicans as well as Democrats
delight to honor.
Farmers are in good spirftBTand they
may well be, wttbjgterospect for good
crops and paying prices.
This, I expect, Is tbe most business place
of iU size in tbe State. Tbe merchants all
seem to be doing a good business, and some
of them have all they can attend to.
Our friend Croft, of tbe firm of Kirk A
Croft, received a present on yesterday it
was a boy, but Croft "still lives." ;
Tbe people ot this section are enjoying
better health than for years, and I hope tbe
grim monster, death, is satiated for awhile
at least. ' Brownsville.
Commendable Enterprise. Tbe other
day . while at the sbor of Mr. W. R, Gra
ham, mercliant tailor, that gentleman ex
hibited for our inspection samples of cloth
made here in Oregon, In imitation of Scotch
goods, to his order. Mr. Graham, a short
time since, forwarded to one of our woolen
factories samples of Scotch goods (which,
by the way, are all the rag in the Eastern
States just now, for gentlemen's fashion
able suits), asking if they could manufac
ture for him like goods. The manager of
the factory, who Is himself a Soot, went to
work Immediately and manufactured seve
ral different styles, samples of which he
forwarded to Mr. Graham, together with
tbe original samples of Scotch goods sent
him. We examined the original Scotch
goods with tbe imitation, and we were un
abhs to distinguish "which from totber"
they were as like as two peas, and we are
inclined to think It would puzzle an expert
to tell the one from tbe other. While the
American goods seem to possess all the
excellent qualities which makes the Scotch
goods rank so high in the markets, yet they
are offered at a smaller figure than the for
eign goods, making a difference of nearly
or quite one-fourth less in tbe cost oi a suit
clothes. By his enterprise and fetet noogbt
oar wormy townsman has thru established
tbe fact that ear Oregon manufactures can
produce cloth, equal in every respect to im
ported goods, which can ba sold at a less
pries, thus retaining the money here to aid
in building up tbe State.- Mr. Graham de
serves credit for the. interest he has taken
in this matter, and we expect to see many
American-Scotch suits that were made at
his place adorning oar haitdsome men tbe
coming tsM. . -
: Liberty Car The committee arranging
for tbe Liberty car have elected Miss Ella

"Oh, wont we Lave a Jolly time!"
Last week the creditors of Parker & Mor
ris met at Portland, and proceeded to se- ,
lect an assignee. Our old : friend Bobt. , t
Irvine, ex-Sberlff of Linn county, was
elected almost unanimously. However, as "
he Is one of the creditors of the estate, oh?
ection was made to bis acting as ssia as
signee. It is possible that Mr. E. Arnold, .
of Portland, will be selected to act as As-
