Kegister: As there are a great many people in Oregon, readers of your valuable paper, who desire to know some - thing of the Palone country, and for the benefit of emigrants who want to come here, I will, in as short a manner as possi ble, describe this section of count ry. What is known as tbe Talonse country is a much larger body ot land than many suppose. There is more farming land here than Is embraced in the great Willamette valley, and each acre, when in proper culti vation, will produce from thirty to sixty buhels of wheat, or from forty to eighty bushels of oats or barley. Timothy, on the wet lands, does well, making from one to three, tons of hay per acre. Potatoes grow to an enormous size, and will yield as much per acre as any place on the Pacific coasts An early rose potato raised in this county last Snmmer weighed seven pounds and seven ounces. Turnips, beet's carrots, cabbage, peas and onions cannot be excelled for size snd quality on this const. The wheat is also of superior quality. I will now give you a description of the country. The entire country is one vast rolling plain or prairie, with small valleys in every direction, both hills and valleys being nearly the same kind of land, a rich. black, loose loam from eighteen inches to three feet deep, with a clay subsoil, with large and small bunch grass as thick as it is possible for it to grow and it grows from eight inches to two and a half feet in Light. Vild flax is to be found In various localities. Wild clover and camas is to be found in tlie wet lands. The. wild clover looks like the large tame red clover, and is relished by all kinds of stock. - Flax yields irom iweive 10- iwenty-nve Dusbeis per acre. Last season, owing to the late, wet Spring, and early Fall rains, it was badly damaged. The hills are as productive as the valleys, and with the common plows about .one-half of the entire hills can be plowed ; with side-hid plows about three fourths. There are thousands of acres to 1 be taken, just as good as anv Vet taken. - 1 on!y a little farther from timber from five to twenty miles. Tho timber is in the mountains, where the quantity is compara tively inexhaustiblcand consists of red and white fir, pine, both white and yellow. cedar of fine quality and in some localities in vast quantities, tamarack in abundance. I and a limited amount of nianle ami nv " """" aulouul m mapie ana yew, Now, a word to emigrant y I know by experience, and from various emigrants that have come through the Walla Walla valley, that in order to retain the emigra tion this country has been misrepresented in various ways. I know both sections ot country, and I will give my word and hon or that there is no such land to be taken south of Snake river as there is north of said river; and I say to emigrants it will cost you but little to come and see. for yourselves. This section is as dry, rolling and healthy a country as can be found on tlie racific coast, beautiful In Bpring and Summer, and clear and cold, and generally dry, in Winter.
