Last Monday, School Director, David
Thompson, called at eacli of the several
public schools, and made a speech to the
scholars at each place. Our new Board of
School Directors are giving more attention
to school matters than any board we have
ever had, and they deserve credit therefor.
Directors to Elect. There will be a
meeting of the stockholders in the Grange
Union of Albany, at their office in this city,
on Monday, May 28th, to elect seven direc
tors to serve the Union one year. And
don't you forget it. , -
Prince Williams, ot Piuss-ia, is hard up
again. Taking pity on his extremity, gen
erous hearted Victoria, England's Queen,
lias just given him an order for a Garter.
It is cxp'-ftcd that the Empress Eugenie
will also ante up with a pass to the circus
and a paper ol hair-pins. .
We forgot to mention the entertainment
given by the public schools two weeks ago,
at the Court House, but it was a way up
entertainment nevertheless, and the build
ing was crowded to its utmost capacity by
an appreciative audience. The entertain
ment was certainly a credit to teachers and
scholars.

Elocution. One of the most thoroughly
enjoyable entertainments given in this city
which we have had the pleasure of attend
ing for many a day, was that given by
Prof. lAT. Henderson, at the College
Chapel on Saturday evening last. The
Professor Was assisted by some of the Very
best talent in the eity Mioses Mary Pow-
ell, Ilettie Miller, Fannie Strahan, Ianra
Tate, Hettie Thompson and Maggie Foster.
As an elocutionist Prof. Henderson has
few superiors, and any entertainment in
which he takes a part, is certain to be a
success. '"The Bells" recitation by the
Professor Was the most perfect piece of elo
cution we ever heard but why particular
ize, when eacb and every piece was a gem !
The Professor should never tail to have a
full house iu this city. Each one of the
Prof's, assistants vied with each other In
the excellence of their productions. "The
Red Jacket," by Miss Mary Powell, was
spoken with such effect as to bring tears to
many eyes, while Miss Hettie Miller's
"Bridal Pledge," was magnificently ren
dered indeed. The instrumental solos by
Mises Laura Tate and Fannie Strahan,
and the duett by Misses Thompson and
Foster, were excellently weir rendered. It
was certainly the finest intellectual treat
our people have been permitted to enjoy
for a long time. Give us more of such ele
vating and entertaining tieats. ;
Insane. Sheriff Herren took to the asy
lum at East Portland on Monday an insane
person named Mrs. Elizabeth Williams,
who has been residing of late at Sweet
Home. Mrs. Williams went to the asylum
from this county about eighteen months
agj, slaying some six months before being
pronounced cured. Mie is aDout do years
of age, and is the mother of four living
children.

Drowned. Between eight and ninef
o'clock last Saturday night Conrad Hilder
brant and Mr. Kelley were wending their
way to the residence of the latter, which is
on what is called the island, a few rod's
north of Magnolia Mills. In attempting to
eross the mill-race over the bridge on
Washington street, north of the St. Charles
Hotel, both parties missed the bridge and
fell into the race. The race is planked op
from the bottom to the top, and the water
is about ten feet deep,- and is an exceeding
ly hard place to get out ot, especially when
the night is exceedingly dark and the par
ties remarkably luli, as on the occasion In
question. By great good fortune Kelley
succeeded in catching hold, with the tips
of his fingered of a hole in the planking
where he held on with a death grip, calling
loudly the while for help. Hilderbrant
was not so eiuwsfifiit. hut-. lon whot ha
could, as appears from Kelley's Btiiteraen'y
to keep up by catching hold of some drift
wood ; but he soon became exhausted, ap
parently, for, iu answer to some words ot
cheer from Kelley, he said, "it's all day
with me," and as Kelley heard no more ot
him, it is supposed he sank then and there.
The two men had been in the water nearly
an hour before relief came. Kelley was1
pulled out pretty well exhausted frorrr his
long soaking In the water. Hilderbrant
was foud by Mr. Stratford, after dragging
the race with a pike-pole for some time,
and was taken out. Deceased was a native
of Germany, aged 55 years, a cooper by
trade, and had been in the employ of Chris.
Ilouck for a long time. About the only
fault deceased had was that whenever in
funds lie would invariably indulge in a
"bust." Deceased was buried on Sunday
afternoon, a large concourse attending the'
