1)0 YOUn BEST.
The heart and niiutl ot man to man
Must ditt'er, it is true.
And so the deed oiir neighbor does
Perchance we ne'er could do ;
And tints hi elimbiug fortune's height
To reach tlws fame in store,
If people only do their best, " .
The world will ask no more,
Doo.s then the little humming bird
Its tender song forsake,
Because the nightingale's sweet voice
May softer music make?
Or does the tiny, twinkling star,
Which lends, to earth it light.
Bepitie because sonic kindred orb
May chance to bum more bright?
And so thro' life we find that some
Are-clarf in praise and fame.
While others meekly plod along.
With itnfight to gild their name ;
But when each life is recon'd up,
Its doings counted o'er,
It we can say. I did my best,"
Our Got! will ask no more.
X. O, Picayune.
A Memento. On Saturday last Dr. G.
W. Gray exhibited to us a piece of hard
wood, probably hickory, an Inch square
and three or four inches in length, which
luid done service for more than forty years.
and was btjll in a good state of preserva
tion. The nociiiiiiriry about this piece of
wood was thtit it had done duty, along
with scores of similar pieces, as a shingle
nail ; or rather in lieu of a nail. Over
forty years ago the father of Dr. Gray se
cured a piece of land in the great West, iu
what is now the State of Indiana, and
erected a large hewed log dwelling and a
very large barn. Nails were scarce and
high, and it was a long distance to the mar
ket, so Mr. Gray concluded to do without
nails. In laying the clap boards for the
roof, lie would put down two boards and
then a third to cover the crack or joint,
boreing a hole in this third board and spik
ing it with a wooden peg to the rafters.
The root on both house and barn was put
on in this way, and tle pins held the roof
right and tight for more than forty years
much better than nails would have done
