A Memento. On Saturday last Dr. G. W. Gray exhibited to us a piece of hard wood, probably hickory, an Inch square and three or four inches in length, which luid done service for more than forty years. and was btjll in a good state of preserva tion. The nociiiiiiriry about this piece of wood was thtit it had done duty, along with scores of similar pieces, as a shingle nail ; or rather in lieu of a nail. Over forty years ago the father of Dr. Gray se cured a piece of land in the great West, iu what is now the State of Indiana, and erected a large hewed log dwelling and a very large barn. Nails were scarce and high, and it was a long distance to the mar ket, so Mr. Gray concluded to do without nails. In laying the clap boards for the roof, lie would put down two boards and then a third to cover the crack or joint, boreing a hole in this third board and spik ing it with a wooden peg to the rafters. The root on both house and barn was put on in this way, and tle pins held the roof right and tight for more than forty years much better than nails would have done for that length of tlma. The piece of wood was taken from one of the roofs mentioned, last Summer, by Mr, Jas, II. Foster, while ou His Centennial visit. At the Calvary Church Last Sun day evening, a large congregation assenibl ed to witness the interesting ceremony ol marriage, Mr. John Wlthcrow and Mrs. Durno being the contracting parties. Bey. II. W. Stratton performed tho ceremony iu splendid style, to the satisfaction of the nanny "mir and the larsre concourse of friends assembled to witness it. Judgln from the immense number ot people col lected at the church on the evening in question, John can congratulate himself on the tact that he has more friends than anybody. There is a growing belief among property-holders that when iusuranco compan ies take risks on property for more than the property is worth, either for the pur pose of trotting that much more money , or through the ignorance of agents, the com panies taking such risks should be forced to nav the lull amount insured when the property is destroyed, and our laws should be so framed as to meet just such cases, New Years day opened chilling fog. with a heavy, THE DRUNKARDS FAMILY, i The night wind blew cold and wild.
