Is there nought that can be done
To stop this hellish work of rum ?
Can not the subtle flend be chained,
And human slaves from death reclaimed ?
If there is a man that Jlve3 on earth
Who hath a cause to curse hU birth,
It surely must be the one
Who deals hist fellows this accursed rum.
ITe is the one who all his lite
Engenders poverty and strife ;
AHs the mother's heart with pain
Distracts (he weary father's brain.
He rot)3 the children of their bread ;
By sorrow's cup alone they're ted ;
To poverty, even death they've corae
Victims of this hellish rum.
A mother pleads her God iunvc
An only son, a drunken slave !
He flies the sad bell toll
Speaks but the fate of an Immortal soul.
News conu-p, like a mighty tide,
Of fearful death by suicide
Some wretch the horrid deed has done
To break the shackles of remorseless rum.
Or else some one, with madened brain.
Will his bands forever stain
With the blood of some other one. rum.

Does it joy or peace impart ?

Or will not a mighty wave of thought,
Willi deeds of crime so strongly fraughr,
Crush you with its towering might.
And your life depart in night ?

I fow lie Homirtert t!ie take.
lie was a tramp, bound Chicagoward,
and as he boarded the couplers at the rear
of an in-coming engine, just across the
line in Indiana, one recent dark and chilly
night, he had faith to believe that he had a
"soft thing" of it for a "cheap ride. But
the conductor, with his eagle eye and rail
way lantern, soon espied the moneyless
passenger ou Ills unchushiotied and com
fortless sent. Did he order him off? Xo.
lie hail a deeper plot. lie let him remain
while on and on went the train, from sta
tion to station, until it reached a great
tank, where the engines stop to "water
up." "
"Xow for him," grinned the heartless
conductor, as he passed to the front.
"Xow for him," he maliciously grunted,
as he grasped the water-trough from the
fireman's hands and directed it over the
back end of the engine.
"Xow for him," he fiendishly grunted,
as he heard a Xoah's deluge pouring over
the head and down the back of the luckless
tramp.
All grew still, and tlie conductor ordered
his train to go on its way. convinced that
he had drowned the tramp, or at least
flooded him so fir away that he could nev
er get back again.
But when that conductor drove Into the
depot in the early morning there was a
surprise in store for him.
"Be you the conductor?" inquired a
shivering voice at his elbdw, as he stepped
on the platform-
"Yes, " said he. looking around and gaz
ing upon a bedraggled and cindercovercd
man.
"Then I want to ask yer why yer don't
run around tlie end of the lake itf coroin
inter town ?"
"I do," said the conductor.
"Yer do?"
"Certainly," was the reply.
"Wall. 1 gosh !" muttered tlie stranger
in a bewildered tone, "blast if I didn't
think yer swum through the lake 1"
The conductor then knew that his tramp
still lived and was water-proof.

the election.
Xotliing is talked of or beard of in
the city, bnt the election. It passed off
here very quietly, there being but few
fights, aiid no noting whatever. The
night before the election, there was a
little trouble in Desbrosscs street, in
which one man was killed and two or
three wounded. A colored club from
Jersey City had participated in a Re
publican parade, and were on their way
home. Xow, it has been tho rit's in
this city, that an Irishman had a per
fect right to beat and maltreat a negro,
whenever and .wherever lie' chose; and
it has never been expected that the
Ethiopian would r?sist. - Consequently
a party of Irish' Pemociats assaulted
these ncgiv ics with a shower of brickbats j
and stones, an.l made tho nsual rush j
upon them. They were astonished.
Tl'.e i;egroes most of them had served
in the army drew np in -order, and
poured a volley. into their tanks from;
rcvo'vers, and then charged upon them :
with knives. This was so complete a
reversal of all rule and precedent, that
the Irishmen did not understand it. To
kill a "r.agur," was good sport, but to
have a "naguv" kill them was not so
amusing. Suoh of them as were able
lied tiigloribusly, and the negroes pro
ceeded very quietly on their way. The
"nigger" is getting to have rights which
red-nosed men are bound to respect.
They wore at the polls all day Tuesday
and voted the same ns other people,
much to the disgust of the thousands of
naturalized Irish who hold this city in
their hands.

night. '.Hut it had no effect upon the
eager aud excited populace. The head
quarters of the National Repullican
Committee were at the Fifth Avenue
IloteJ, and as early as seven o'clock the
streets in tho vicinity. wer crowded
with an excited mass of people, await
ing news of the result. Tweuty-third
strppf, Fifth avenue, and the streets ad
jacent were packed with a throng, with
and without umbrellas, all eager to hear
the returns, and know who was to be
the next President. The doors of the
committee rooms were guarded by
policemen to keep but the impatient
throng who had money, or what was
more, opinions, staked upon the result.
At eight o'clock the news commenced
coming in. It was all one way. New
York city had gone Democratic by ma
jorities which no one anticipated, and
tbe Republicans looked blue, and many
of them went home feeling that chaos
had come again, and that there was no
hope for anything in this world. Fol
lowing this came the returns from Indi
ana, showing a complete and over
whelming Democratic victory in that
State, and there was another exodus ot
Republicans.
Then I left the Fifth Avenue Hotel
and went down to Tammany Hall and
Irving Hall, the headquarters ot the
Demociaey. The scene was quite dif
ferent. All was jubilation and joy.
There was more drunkenness, more nn
reasoning, unmeaning jubilation than I
ever saw before or ever want to see
again. 3len who expect places under
Tilden, men who have promises of posi
tions in the event of a Democratic suc
cess, were reeling drunk in tho hope of
the victory which they believed they
had achieved, and they did not conceal
their exultation.' The rum-mills in the
vicinity were packed with them, and the
entire territory was made as complete a
pandemonium as the most malicious
devil that Alilton ever painted conld
have desired. ' And so through the
whole of Tuesday night. The Demo
cratic quarters of the city were awake
anddrunk.
Wednesday morning a change came
over the spirit of tliir dreams. New
Vork had gone Democratic, so had In
diana, bnt they woke up to the realiza
tion ot the fact that to elect Tilden the
Southern States were necessary, and
there were grave doubts as to whether
he had got them all. Florida looked
badly for them South Carolina was in
doubt, North Carolina was ditto, and
Louisiana looked certain for Hayes.
Tbe Democracy suddenly got sober and
began to behave itself. The exultation
of the drunken night before 'settled
down into tho sobriety cf a doubt. It
was not impossible that Hayes was
elected after all, and possibly they had
been counting chickens before they were
hatched.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT STILL TJXCERTAIX.
Ten thousand men ; who had been
promised positions under Tilden began
to look bine. The news came that
Florida had gone for Hayes, and that
Louisiana and South Carolina had done
likewise. Evidently they had rejoiced
before their time.
Thursday morning, Florida, South
Carolina; Louisiaiia,IIayea! Hayes,
185 votes, just enough to elect. De
mocracy blue, and a little animation,
observable among Republicans. But
the bets ! Immediately the Democratic
papers commenced issuing false bulle
tins. Reports came., in all day that
these States had gone for Tilden, and
crowds of people thronged about the
various newspaper offices to see the
latest. And in the pool-rooms up-town,
the old gamblers who had put their
money upon Tilden, took advantage of
these lying bnllolins they were dis.
played in their interest to quietly '
hedge .by having others bet upon Til
den, while they, by the help of their
outside friends, were quietly making
themselves good by placing their money
on Hayes. Whatever may be the re
sult, and at this writing it is impossible
to say, this is what the Democratic
gamblers are doing.
AXTlCIP.VnOXS OF TROUBLE.
Tho Democracy hve already lore
shadowed their purpefe. In the event
of Hayes' election, thy intend to claim
that it was" effected " by fraud, and to
dispute it. Tho Iferaltl this morning
gave the keynote of their purpose in
prognosticating a civil war if the elec.
lion shall bo decided by a single vote,
Tbe Democracy of New York, backed
up by the solid Sou'h, intend it the
election is decided for Hayes by a ma,,
jority of one or two States, to put in a
claim ot fraud and dispute it. lhat
this is their purpose is evident from the
expressions that have been made on the
streets and in their newspapers, when
ever tho returns indicated the mccesa
of the Republican ticket. Desperate
men can make trouble, but it is difficult ;
to see what they can do when the Gov,
eminent happens to be in the hands of .
the conservative class of the people,
whose only interest is in favor of law
and order and opposed to the Mexican,
izing process of deciding elections by
revolntionarv mpt.hndR. If this in at
tempted it will come to an ignominious
end. The United States is not Mexico,
atid" Mexican processes will not have
support. If Hayes is elected he will be
inaugurated, and woe be to the faction -that
stands in the way.
OTUEft MATTERS.
There it- no use of writing of other
matters, for there is nothing but the
election thorght of or spoken of. Busi,
ness is entirely suspended, and nothing
is thought of or talked of but- tl e elec-
t.inn i Whn that is nvpr I will trv tn
write you something of general interest.
Just now the city is a buzzing mass ot
