Strength tor to-day is all that we need, As there will never be a to-morrow ; For to-morrow will prove another to.Uay, With its measure of joy and sorrow. Then why forecast the trials of lite With audi grave and sad persistence, And watch and wait for a crowd of ills " That as 3ret have no existence? Strength for to-lay what a precious boon For the earnest Minis who labor. For ihe willing hands that minister To the needy triend or neighbor. Strength tor to-day that the weary heart pin the battle lor right may quail not ; And the eyes be dimmed with bitter tears, In their search ivr light may fail not. Strength for to-day, on the downhill track, For the travelers near the valley That up, lor up on the other side. Ere long they may safely rally. Strength for to-day-that our precious youth May happily shun temptation. And build from the rise to the set of the sun On h strong and sure foundation. Strength for to-day iu hotise and home To practice forbearance sweetly To scatter kind words and loving deeds. Still trusting in Gd completely. Strength for to-day 5s all that we need, As there never will be n to-morrow. For to-morrow will be but another to-day. Wiih its measure of joy and sorrow. FOETUXB IS A FICKLE JADE. What strange freaks fortune plays. A man is apparently at the very top-ronnd ot success to-day, while the future seems full of smiles for him ; but the morrow comeg, and the merest accident has changed the whole asjM.-ct of what so recently bid tairto continue an overflowing tide of prosperity! But we didn't intend to moralize when we set down to pen this article, but rntrfJy to write down an instance of one man's luck." On Saturday a gentleman came into our office nnd exhibited a splendid gold watch and chain which he had just received, and which he said cost him one dollar. As the articles were apparently worth over f 200. we wore surprised at the remark, and "inquired how it happened. He informed us that about ten years ago he invested one dollar in a lottery or gift enterprise, and with others, alter the draw ing, was informed that he had been unsuc cessful that his ticket or number drew a blank." It seems that thortly after tlie drawing, owing io the l ict that laws were passed inimical to g tmbling enterprises ot this kind, the affairs of the companies were wound up. Two of llicm, in one of which our friend had invested his dollar, had been consolidated, and wi.en their atKtirs had been wound up, it was found that there was a surplus on hand of $47,000 the ac cumulation of prizes that had never been called fur during the existence of the com panies A dispute h.osc as to who owned this surplus money.'and it was taken to the courts lor decision. The courts decided that the money belonged to tlie ticket holder, and it was ordered that those per sons who had purchased tickets but . had failed to receive any return, should now come in and share the money so left in the hands of the companies. In pursuance of this order, the money was so expended as that at the drawing each ticket-holder should draw a prize, great or small. A few weeks ago our friend received infor mation that he had been one of the lucky ones, his number having drawn a gold watch valued at 200.- and asking how it should be sent.. And this is how our friend happened to obtain a $200 gold watch for the small Sum of fl expended ten years ago. The City Election Is almost upon ns, and little knots of men on the corners can be seen serenely canvassing the situa tion. There seems to be no lack of can didates to fill the paying offices, while there are several who will except situations as Councilmen, if said situations are forced upon them. The city has prospered well under the watchful care of the present City Dads, owing, doubtless, to the fact, that the Mayor and four of the six Ctmucilmcn were honest, capable, squaretoed Republi cans. We don't wish to be understood as casting anj slurs upon the two Democratic Councilmen; not a bit of if. They are two of the best men in the party ; but then, fteing in such good company, they couldn't well go astray, and they don't deserve any special commendation tor what they couldn't help 1 Seei ng that the affairs of the city have prospered so well in Republican hands, would it :-t be the port of wise economy and good business sense to continue the city government in ihe same hands in the hands of the Re publican party? We believe it would ; nnd we are Inclined to the opinion that all the Republican City Convention has to do Is to place In nomination good, sound, ca pable, honest men, the peers of those nt present in office, to secure the election of the entire ticket. A change nt the present time might prove disastrous ; it is a good maxim to "let well enough alone," and our people generally, we believe, are of this way ot thinking. Let us nominate a good ticket, and there'll be no trouble in securing Its election. Pond's Extract. It is a fact that, once introduced into the house, if holds an un divided place. It Is an unfailing remedy in all cases where a lotion or a liniment la needed ; and as a Pain Destroyer it U with out a rival. AH druggists sell lu Dedication. Lebanon Lodge No. 47, I.O.O.F., dedicate their splendid new hall on Friday night of next week. Invitations have been sent out to the various Lodges in the district, and there will doubtless be an immense gathering of three-linkers on the occasion. And from what we know of the liberality oi our brothers at Lebanon, we can promise the best of treatment and a way tip time to all who attend. We sup pose there will be a f till delegation of grand ofiictr3 at the blow out. We think Albany Lodge, with its seventy or eighty mem bers, will send a healthy delegation, and we think wo can safely promise that each will do his dooty when grub time comes. The New Steamboat. Capt. Cochran's new steamboat, built for the Willamette trade, launched a few days 'ago and ' chris tened the S. T. JOhvrch U now lying at Flander's wharf, Portland, where she will receive her machinery, etc. The OregonU flw gives her dimensions as follows: Length oer all, about 170 feet ; beam," 35 feet ; hold, 5 teet ; carrying capacity some 300 ton-, and whi-n 'o tde I, on n evn I, eel. will draw but three feet. The cylinders are 1 "inch bore and 6 feet stroke. The boat is expected to be completed ready for her trial trip in about one month. Moke Fun ahead. The ladies of the Congregational Church propose giving a grand fair, festival and sociable at the Opera House on the evening ot December 13th Friday evening. The Congrega tional ladies are just nearly lightning on affairs of this kind, and we predict the com ing will be one of the best ever witnessed hi the Opera House. Success to the Xair. Ot'K XHW YORK LETTER. New York, October 2S, 1S73. Politics Peter Cooper The Watfr Supply Kents After the Centen nial life Insurance Business,"' RENTS are falling with every week. AVLat was 250 a month in September is 175 now, and tho agents of property-holders make no secret of advising tenants to wait for lower price?. The threatened change has come in the rates of board, which are tlie last to feel the revolution. The expensive suits on the first floor front in rosewood and isatin, which were the pride of board ing-honse keepers, now 81 and untenanted; for, as the ex perienced in the business say, everybody is looking fur second-rate rooms. The ..money which once paid for plain, spare ly furnished rooms on an upper story, in a third-rate house Is now the asking price for really luxurious apartments, unexceptionable in position and taste. The old honors ot carpets dark and lurid as tho horrors of the pit, or showy as the flowers of sin, and furniture that looked as if it had been seized for debt gradually disappears from city board ing houses, in place of which are charm ing mottled and tufted carpets, wall papers with diapered border and em broidered furniture dear to artist's eyes. Tho crowd and rush of the closing Cen tennial saves more than one, hotel and boarding-house keeper from loss this season. All good Philadelphians will be able to refurnish their houses with the money from Centennial pilgrims, . and the overflow - reaches New York, We are. crowded out of our elevators in public buildings, out of our picture galleries by hordes ot strangers, and made spectacles in our own dominions to the pilgrims in brown linen with satchels, who, grown bold at the big show, are able to stare creation out ot countenance. At Earle's hotel, a pop ular but not a high-priced hotel nor yet a cheap one, cots have to be put up in tho billiard room to give people a chance to sleep. AFTER THE CENTENNIAL. Probably hundreds of women all over the country will die from the effects of their trip to the Centennial. In the first place, a woman will work herself to the last of her strength for three weeks before to make new dresses and to leave her house in order, so as to go to Philadelphia. Once there, she walks miles, from building to building and through the galleries, -lands on her feet from morning to night, gets a - hasty. ill-served dinner o lunch, or goes with out, and stays her appetite with pop corn or candy, gets healed in suffocating crowds, and chilled in damp, fireless halls, lives in hurry, crowds and excite ment, till the tension of nerve absolutely upsets the ability of the brain to hold impressions. ihe goes homo never so thankful to reach it in her life, is snap pish, worn out and hysterical for a week, and while plunging into the fall sewing or mince pie making, while yet j unstrung with over-exciteroent, and a I pneumonia or typhoid has a Rood j chance to carry her off if it seizes her. , These great exhibitions ore like the tri umphal staircases, ot which after they are built the steps prove too high for human beings to ascend. The crowds who saunter through Centennial Halls with dazed vacant air, show how the thing falls on common minds, with its wearisome variety. politics. . New York was never so exercised, politically, as at tins time. With the Democracy it is a struggle for life;, with the Republicans it is a struggle for the life of the nation. The Democracy have been OiU ot the custom houses and poet, offices 'so long that they are desperately hungry, and this is their last chance. They have the city to plunder now, but the field is too small. Tammany can. not feed all its adherents out ct the spoils ot one city, even though it is a New York, and it -wants the nation, The thousands ot .Democratic-place hunters, tho thousands t professioji&l " politicians, who.Jiavo their left haids in father Knickerbocker's pocket, are keen to slip tho right into Uncle Sam. uel's, consequently they are making such a tight as was never seen. Torch, light processions occur nightly, the gin mills are all chartered, the thieves have all been instructed and -famished with the inanitions of political war, and the old time rascality is in full play.' -2,000 pauperp in Brooklyn, wlio have no more right to a ballot than the Sioux Indians were carted out and registered, and ev-, ery man ol them will be voted. The repeaters have registered to a degree unheard ot before, and every scoundrelly appliance that Tammany in its worst days ued, is being used again under the jiersonal diiectior of Ti!danyIIe knows all about how to do it, fort be has carried New York before by (the same means.
